This week, grab your camera and capture a shadow.
Starting today, weekly photo challenges will be up on Wednesdays (instead of Fridays). Challenges are still weeklong, so the next one will be posted on Wednesday, February 15. Happy camera-snapping!
You can completely change an image with a shadow. Whether you’re taking a selfie silhouette on the ground, capturing the lines and patterns on the walls while walking your city’s streets, or recording the subtle ways the light hits your subject’s face as she sits next to a window, these different types of shadows you see can add a complex, unexpected layer to your shot.

For anyone interested in black and white photography, read tips from Merilee Mitchell.
In this photo taken in the English countryside, I initially approached the fence so I could get a better shot of this horse. But as I scanned the scene, the shadows of the horse, me, and my companion overtook the foreground, so I made sure to capture a few angles with and without them.
This week, hunt for shadows and incorporate them into your shot. The shadow can be the focal point of the image, or simply a detail that adds texture and makes the scene a bit more dynamic. We look forward to your submissions!
…will shadow you in a while right here…

Ha! Twice! Once when ‘Wednesday’ leaped forward to Friday, and the second time when too-full hands had no time for posting Timeout for Art! Am at the earthquake site/area so internet is erratic — it’s pretty sad here still, 9 months (in five days) since it hit…

I’ve made my post this week with a bicycle theme – unintentionally but my shadow photos just happened to include bikes! It might take me a while to get used to the change of days for the photo challenge!

What a delightful challenge, Cheri – and I LOVE the two versions of your shadow photos. The one with the pony adds so much to our understanding of that scene. My submission is much more stark but funny: https://babsjeheron.wordpress.com/2017/02/09/if-the-beautiful-great-blue-heron-sees-his-shadow/
