“I took this picture at the Avalon Hotel in Beverly Hills. I came out of my room to attend a meeting and that girl was there, waiting for someone, wearing that costume. I took that picture with my DSLR, a 28mm lens and with only a few moments to compose the shot.
Opportunities arise unannounced. They don’t ring a bell. They just show up and we need to be ready to take advantage of them.
As a street photographer I know that most of the time I don’t have any control of what’s going to happen in front of me. I have learned to accept it and I prefer to focus on what I can actually do to catch opportunities: be prepared.
I clean the lenses, charge the batteries, format the memory cards and most important, I always carry a camera with me. It does’t matter if it’s my DSLR, my compact or just my phone, what matters is that I’m always available to be surprised by the world and I’m always ready to capture the unannounced opportunities that happen in front of me.
What’s a picture that represents opportunity for you?”
Luca Sartoni is an Italian blogger and photographer based in Vienna, Austria. He travels a lot and takes thousands of photos to find the shots he wants. He likes to focus on details but sometimes he stops to understand the big picture better.
New to The Daily Post? Whether you’re a beginner or a professional, you’re invited to get involved in our Weekly Photo Challenge to help you meet your blogging goals and give you another way to take part in Post a Day / Post a Week. Everyone is welcome to participate, even if your blog isn’t about photography.
Here’s how the weekly photo challenge works:
1. Each week, we’ll provide a theme for creative inspiration. You take photographs based on your interpretation of the theme, and post them on your blog anytime before the following Friday when the next photo theme will be announced.
2. To make it easy for others to check out your photos, title your blog post “Weekly Photo Challenge: (theme of the week)” and be sure to use a “postaday2011″ or “postaweek2011″ tag.
3. Subscribe to The Daily Post so that you don’t miss out on weekly challenge announcements. Sign up via the email subscription link in the sidebar or RSS.
