This week, let’s keep our angles sharp and heart rate fast.
Please note that we won’t be publishing a new Photo Challenge next Friday, September 16. Challenges will resume the following Friday, September 23.
Few elements define a photo more than the point of view you choose for it. I don’t have a favorite way to frame my shots, but I’ve noticed that I’m often drawn to visual borders and dividers. Give me a wide-open landscape, and I feel unmoored (and my iPhone camera, inadequate). Throw in some demarcating line between me and what I see, and things start to fall into place.

A few weeks back, I spent a hot summer morning at Buntzen Lake, a popular spot for a swim just outside Vancouver, Canada. It’s a gorgeous place, but its beauty kept eluding my photos. They all felt anchorless and flat. Then I walked to the edge of the small pier, where a couple of fishing buddies were roasting in the sun, and everything clicked. Adding just a small glimpse of the battered wooden planks made it clear where I stood — and where the water began. It added visual tension where none existed, and structure to a shot that desperately needed some.
This week, share your own interpretation of “edge.” Take a photo from an actual edge, like a balcony, a window, or a seaside bluff (wherever you are, stay safe!). Focus on a sharp angle or object, or show us the outer margins of a building, a face, or a book. I look forward to seeing your photos!

A great challenge. I loved the way the foreground provides focus for the rest of the picture. Here’s mine: https://castelsarrasin.wordpress.com/2016/09/09/the-edge-of-dorset-weekly-photo-challenge/

Perfect theme for me this week. I’ve practically been living on the edge this whole summer! 😀
