First Friday

Brand new blogger? Welcome! Share a link to your first post, say hello to other new faces, and find your first few readers.

Please note: First Friday will be on hiatus next week. We’ll return on Friday, April 6th

For other help:
If you’re not new and are looking for support or feedback, the Community Pool is the place for you!

For technical questions, visit the WordPress.com Support Forums.

To learn more about blogging, take a Blogging U. course.

To find, copy, and paste your link:
Head to your blog’s home page — not your dashboard, your blog itself. Click on the title of your post to open the individual post.

Highlight and copy the URL you see in your browser’s address bar, and paste the entire URL into a comment here.

Welcome to First Friday, a weekly open thread where any new blogger can share a link to his or her very first post with the larger WordPress.com community. To share your first post with us, copy and paste the link right into a comment here. If you’re not new, you can still be a part of First Fridays: visit a link or two, and leave the blogger a like or comment.

Please don’t use this as a space to share your first post…. that you published three years ago; ditto for simply sharing your latest post. Posts should have been published within the last month, and should be your first post. We’ll remove other posts to keep this space focused for new bloggers.

We ask that you help us keep this space focused by following a few additional guidelines:

  • We encourage anyone who shares a link to visit a few other bloggers. New readers for all!
  • When commenting, the third time is not the charm: don’t share the same link repeatedly, or in multiple First Friday threads. We’ll remove repeat posts.
  • Link directly to your new post, rather than to your blog generally — it makes it that much easier for folks to like the post or leave you comments.
  • Avoid repeated “Follow for a follow!” comments. (Tip: if you’re trying to build a readership, it’s much more effective to visit and comment on individual bloggers.)
  • To keep from losing your place while you visit others’ blogs, right-click on links to open them in a new tab or window.
  • When commenting, avoid copying and pasting the same response repeatedly. It makes it look like you’re not really paying attention. Not to mention, it’s spammy.

    1. Hi ! The content of your posts is pretty good and detailed but you should try adding a little bit of extra formatting (using bolded words, italics, adding pictures etc) to make it visually appealing to the reader.
Also, I couldn’t find an About page on your blog. Try including that too. It helps the reader to know you personally. Happy blogging!

      Well written blog 😀

    1. I would suggest an about page. Tell us a little about you, why you’re blogging and what your blog will be about. It’s a taster, a teaser to get people to look deeper. Have a look at others about me pages and find what works for you but bear in mind, it’s the first thing a lot of people look for so make it work 😊

    2. Hi!
This is some good advice that many forget. Remembering yourself when it is so easy to become choked up in the day-to-day. I liked it very much and it spoke to me.

The only thing I might mention is it might be useful to change your theme to have larger writing. It can be very small on a laptop screen, which may be a put off to some people.

I like your thoughts, and I like that you share so much that allows people to connect with you as a writer. Good job! And a late happy birthday for February. I hope you had a good celebration. I love that you are a breast cancer surgeon who has found the time to write.

      1. No problem, I love reading other posts. If you haven’t already and fancy, I would be very grateful if you visited my site, leave a like or a comment if you wish, and if it strikes you, hit ‘follow’ and it would make my day! 🙂

    1. Some nice description. You might find you get more readers if you put a spin on it that will place a question in the readers’ minds or entice them to read on, such as titling your piece ‘How to Survive A Morrisey Concert’ or similar. Great job though. I left a comment.

    2. Great job so far!
I couldn’t see like or follow buttons at the end of your posts. Those are pretty much essential. You want to make it as easy as possible for people to like, comment and follow you. If I have to give my email to follow or leave a comment, well, I’ll be honest, I don’t. This page will help:
      https://wordpress.com/support/likes/

If you change your posts to show as excerpts on your home page the layout will look much better and people can instantly see and click on individual posts. You can do this in your customized under blog content. I hope that helps!

    1. One thing I found is that clicking on your “name” takes me to a dead link. If you click on my name you’ll see it’s my blog title with my name as the hyper link.
The me page is where you can fix that! Every time you leave a comment or a like, people might go to your blog via that link. If it’s a dead link, you’re losing out on viewers for your blog.

You’re ready to move on to the Community Pool, where the water is fine and the members of the community are lovely. A new pool opens every Monday. Bloggers of all stripes and levels of experience are welcome to comment there and ask for feedback and advice on their blog. All the best!

Actually – my biggest problem was that I couldn’t see where your posts stopped and a new one started. If you change your posts to show as excerpts on your home page the layout will look much better and people can instantly see and click on individual posts.

    1. Your content is great! All my suggestions relate to other things because you’ve bailed the writing bit 😊 I would suggest an about page. 1. I can’t help but notice that you’re using a lot of tags on your posts. The WordPress.com Reader actually filters out posts that use more than 15 tags and categories (combined) as an anti-spam measure, so using this many tags actually makes it harder for folks to find your work, which is sad! If you cut your tags down to the most relevant, you’ll actually draw more readers. Here are some tips on tagging you might find helpful.

      1. Thanks Krista, will do that. I was actually mostly here just to read other people’s blogs and feedback etc. Is that alright or would you rather I stuck to Community Pool?

        Thanks!

    1. Hi!!
I have a few suggestions. Content is great. You might want to consider short excerpts of each post rather than just a title so people can get an idea about it.
To change the link associated with your comments, go to https://wordpress.com/me and scroll down to Profile Links. 😊

I would suggest an about page. Tell us a little about you, why you’re blogging and what your blog will be about. It’s a taster, a teaser to get people to look deeper. 3. A post to help parents build social and emotional intelligence in their children.

“By teaching skills ,like empathy, problem-solving, and perspective taking, we can help nurture civility in our children.”

Hi all. I’m a new blogger and I have just started a parenting blog. So any parents, guardians, educators or anyone else involved with working or caring for children in any capacity may be interested in taking a look.

    1. Good morning and welcome to WordPress! Your wavy hair post was cute and relatable . . . at least for me, I have the same issues with hair. Question, where did you get the illustrations? Did you do these? They are fantastic! One suggestion is to consider adding an about page to your site so that readers can go there to learn a bit about you and learn what to expect from you. Good luck!

      1. Thank you so much Ma’am . Regarding the illustrations,i didnot draw them Ma’am,i found them on the internet. And yes,i am considering the idea of adding an about page to my site, but my problem is- i do not write on one definite category 😀 mine is a kind of #nocategory kind of writeups.Henceforth,i have not done that part yet. But Thank you once again ma’am for your encouraging comment. its a booster for me😊
