Community Pool

Where WordPress bloggers support each other with feedback and advice.

Have you just published a new post and are dying for some feedback? Are you redesigning your blog and could use some layout or design advice from your more seasoned peers?

The Community Pool is for peer feedback and advice. Looking for more specific information? Check out some of these resources:

Tap into the wisdom of The Daily Post blogging community and leave your question here in the comments. Others can then click through and offer input either on your site, or in the comments here (feel free to indicate which you’d prefer).

Looking for more information about custom domains, advanced design options, and other enhancements for your blog? Find the WordPress.com plan that’s right for you.

Are you a new blogger looking to share your very first post? We have a special forum for bloggers just like you in our weekly First Friday posts.

To help us make the Community Pool a productive space for discussion, here are some tips and guidelines you might find useful:

  • While you’re not required to, we encourage everyone who requests feedback to also reply to at least one or two other bloggers who need some help. Spread the love!
  • The Community Pool comments section can get quite big — and starting duplicate threads doesn’t help. Thanks for not posting the same question more than once, as well as for not starting numerous threads in a single Pool.
  • If you’re looking for quality feedback, be as specific as you can. Questions about a particular post tend to draw more comments than ones about entire blogs. Questions about specific design elements are more likely to be answered than ones asking for general layout advice.
  • We discourage leaving links without a more substantive message or question. These are often overlooked by other bloggers, and we frequently remove them to make the comment reading experience smoother. Also note that including multiple links in your comment might automatically put it in the moderation queue, which will delay its publication.
  • Please keep all comments civil and constructive. The idea is to have fun — it’s a pool, after all!
  • To keep from losing your place in the comment thread while you visit others’ blogs, right-click on a link to open it in a new tab or window.
  • If you haven’t looked at our Commenting Guidelines in a while, now might be a good time.
  • No running on the deck.

    1. I love lost places and just had to follow your blog, even tough I’ll most likely be stuck with dreaming about urban exploration for a while, around here its just not that common…

    1. Hey! I’m going through the same thing. I think that you should continue writing about whatever you like! People will naturally follow you because of who you are. Would you please look at my blog and give me some feedback as well?

    2. I agree that you should write about whatever feels authentic for you. I began blogging for the sole purpose of processing trauma. Over time, readers have gravitated towards my writing, I believe in part because I am uncensored in my recounting of experiences. Just stay true to you.l

  1. Hi !

I haven’t written any new post since the last community pool but I did re-write my about page. Would love it if you could check it out!

    About

I did change the font for my posts too. Is it okay ?

I blog about pop culture and here’s a link to my last post. It’s a comparsion between digital and physical in the case of books, games and movies.

    Physical vs Digital

Any kind of feedback would be most welcome. May the force be with you!

    1. Hi, Gilberto! I checked out your blog and read your About page. So far, the only thing I would change, if I were you, is to remove some of the very detailed personally identifying information (PII) you’ve included in your About page (not really a good idea to share with the whole world your full birthday or cities of residence). Stay safe, bro!

    1. Great post! Just a tip for your blog in general: your site will look more professional if you add some text to the widget on the right hand side and fill in your “About” page. You can do this by clicking the “Customize” button that appears when you scroll through your blog. Maybe add a few sentences about yourself and what you like to blog about! People want to get to know you 🙂

  2. Hello to all the writers and readers.

I hope you all are doing well. I am a newcomer and started off with my blog this month. I love to write poems because I believe poem is the best way to showcase feelings that are important yet difficult to express. I posted poems written by me for my mom and dad as I had to start with my blog, I thought why not begin my journey by posting poems for two most adorable persons in my life.
I would like you check on my post and know what you think about the same.

    1. Your poems are lovely! I also really like the soft pink color you’ve chosen for your background. My only suggestion might be to put your actual poems before your copyright info instead of after?

    2. Hi, Shirly! I’m following your blog because I’m liking your personality that’s coming through! May I suggest a technical improvement to your blog? Get your blogs to show up only as excerpts on your Home page instead of having every post fully show. When I look over at the scroll bar and see it is extremely tiny, my first thought is, “Oh no! This is a really long blog! I don’t wanna be reading forever!”

      1. Honestly, I will find out how to do this now. This is very helpful of you and I really Appreciate it. I have been wanting to do this, I just haven’t figured out how.

  6. Good Monday, fellow bloggers! I’ve done another first: built a post off a non-WP blogger’s post! You’ll find a hyperlink to the original, so you can check it out as well.
My blog will help you know how you can still experience God’s love even when nobody else is doing anything loving for you. Read it here: https://domesticminister.com/2018/02/23/the-inside-perspective-of-gods-love/

On the more technical side, please help me by answering a few questions: How important to you are pictures/graphics when you are the reader (not the writer)?
Are you more likely to read a post because it has a featured photo/image? Do pictures/graphics placed within the body of the post really contribute to your decision to keep reading a longer post (any length that requires you to scroll)?

I’m asking because finding suitable images for my blogs is starting to take up more of my time than what it takes to actually write the post! Argh! (And no, I do not need more stock-photo websites; I have plenty of options already. The problem is the time it takes to search those sites…time I could be using to write more posts!)

So talk to me about the value of photos in blogs you read! Thanks in advance!

    1. I think if your post supports photos in the body text, then great! ie travel blogs, destination blogs, style etc…
If not, I don’t want to see highly stylized, run of the mill stock photos. I do like a header photo that is closely related as an additional attention grabber. I’ve made it a goal to use all of my own photos, to try and maintain unique-ness. There’s my .02…use as you please! 😉

      1. Thank you for this input. I do try to get the pictures to relate well with my content, and I guess that’s part of the problem–finding that just right picture to illustrate a point is like finding a needle in a haystack sometimes!

    2. If a post is short, having a photo/image is not a factor in whether or not I read it. If the post requires me to scroll, an image can sometimes keep me reading when I would otherwise not finish reading. More than images, I look for other things to break up the text (small paragraphs, sub-titles, bullets). BTW, I enjoyed the inside perspective post though I didn’t click through to the post yor refereced. https://gracelead.co

      1. Thanks for sharing these factors. I don’t always do sub-titles/headings or bullet points, but I definitely see the value of keeping paragraphs short. Traditional sized paragraphs belong in a book, not the internet. Big paragraphs on the internet are truly what my daughter described them as: a wall of words! (Not very appealing!)
As for the referenced post, I trust that my blog still made sense without reading the other?

    3. I do like one or two photos but they are not essential to the reading. However, I’m not a fan of GIFs. I find too many distracting and to be honest probably migraine inducing!
I’ve found a featured image is preferable to none on the blog as it makes the post look more attractive to potential readers. I asked a small cohort of readers and non-readers of my blog their opinion on what would draw them into the blog itself to read. Hope this helps 🙂

    1. I have 2 sisters who graduated with English degrees. Everyone told them they were “useless” degrees, unless you wanted to teach English or be a journalist. Not true. But, I have the feeling you know that already.

      1. I have literally just gotten started. I went to college for two years, then got married and didn’t finish. Ten years later, I’m getting back into it through a “finish what you started” program through my university where I can get my degree on line.

  8. I’d like to invite everyone to come by and check out my weekly poem, “Atlantic City.” I wrote this poem a few years ago, and yes, its inspired by the song. February strikes me as a stark, gray month. The poem, as well as the image represent the feeling. Comments and feedback are always welcome, and please leave them in the comments section of the post page, and click the like button on the post page. If you like what you see, feel free to browse around, and follow along so you don’t miss anything as I post several times a week. Thanks in advance.
