To learn more about blogging, take a Blogging U. course.

To find, copy, and paste your link:
Head to your blog’s home page — not your dashboard, your blog itself. Click on the title of your post to open the individual post.

Highlight and copy the URL you see in your browser’s address bar, and paste the entire URL into a comment here.

Welcome to First Friday, a weekly open thread where any new blogger can share a link to his or her very first post with the larger WordPress.com community. To share your first post with us, copy and paste the link right into a comment here. If you’re not new, you can still be a part of First Fridays: visit a link or two, and leave the blogger a like or comment.

Please don’t use this as a space to share your first post…. that you published three years ago; ditto for simply sharing your latest post. Posts should have been published within the last month, and should be your first post. We’ll remove other posts to keep this space focused for new bloggers.

We ask that you help us keep this space focused by following a few additional guidelines:

  • We encourage anyone who shares a link to visit a few other bloggers. New readers for all!
  • When commenting, the third time is not the charm: don’t share the same link repeatedly, or in multiple First Friday threads. We’ll remove repeat posts.
  • Link directly to your new post, rather than to your blog generally — it makes it that much easier for folks to like the post or leave you comments.
  • Avoid repeated “Follow for a follow!” comments. (Tip: if you’re trying to build a readership, it’s much more effective to visit and comment on individual bloggers.)
  • To keep from losing your place while you visit others’ blogs, right-click on links to open them in a new tab or window.

    1. Great post! Liked and commented 🙂
I noticed you have not yet filled in your About page – this is really useful to let other bloggers know all about you. 🙂

    1. Hi, great post!
I didn’t see any categories on your site. Along with tags these can draw readers to you as they help identify you when someone searches the internet. They are great for sorting your posts when you start to build a large body of work and can help you and your readers to find the articles that you want. Feel free to take a look at my blog to see how I’ve used archives, categories and tags. 🙂

    1. Welcome 🙂

If you look over to the right of your posts, you’ll see a bit of placeholder text — it’s meant to help you learn how to work with widgets, and you can remove or edit that by going to My Site > Customize > Widgets. Look for the Text Widget!

(For more on widgets, what they’re for, and how to use them, check out https://learn.wordpress.com/get-flashy/)

    1. This is certainly impressive for one week’s work, and with what you’ve posted thus far, you have quite a cache from your past that you won’t be wanting for material. As if you’ve been wanting to blog all along…

    1. Now that you’ve gotten over the obstacle of writing a first post (if it was that easy, wouldn’t there be more bloggers?), what happens next? I know that this early in the game it’s a bit much to think, but with some direction, you know what kind of material you’ll be leaning towards and what kind of voice you develop in your blog. You’ll even notice that your thoughts are not as random as you think – even a self-professed ‘random thoughts’ blog has at least a couple of over-arching themes that the author may not be consciously aware of.

    2. I enjoyed reading your first post, Katie! I am also a book lover and makeup addict. 🙂

My only suggestion for your blog would be to add a ‘like’ button somewhere on the page, so that we can like your posts even if we don’t leave a comment.

      1. Hmm…I went to my settings and it says I have the like button enabled, but I don’t see it on the page. I’ll have to look into that. I’ll check out your blog too! 😊

  2. Thanks for setting up this First Fridays post, Michelle!

I started my first blog yesterday and am still learning to navigate the technical side of WordPress. So far, it seems pretty intuitive — thank goodness!

My blog focuses on sharing the content and resources I use as a volunteer radio host when putting together my weekly science show. It’ll be a fun place to visit for those who are interested in becoming a volunteer radio show host and for those who are science enthusiasts in general.

Good luck to everyone with their new blogs! I can’t wait to read through your posts. 🙂

    1. A fellow science blogger! Yes!!

I would suggest spending an afternoon or so messing around the Customizer so you could write up an About page (this is where you really want to talk about your radio hosting!) and add links, etc. Also, it’s a good way to make your blog feel more like home, thus you would want to keep blogging in it.

      1. Thanks, Ruth! I just followed your blog. I loved your piece on Princess Di’s fashion story. I’m going to forward that link to my sister — she’s always loved Diana. She even had a Princess Di paper doll set when she was little. 🙂

    1. One published piece and one blog post – great start 🙂
I’ve had one thing published too, an article in a very niche magazine. But I have the hard copy – it’s real 🙂
Good luck with the writing and I look forward to seeing more of your work.

  3. Hey Bloggers!
I’ve been blogging for about a week now and I’m really excited to publish all my ideas. Initially I thought my blog would be a lifestyle and beauty blog but it’s kind of changed into something I don’t know how to describe, but it is more me-like, so I don’t know whether to keep going or stay with my beauty ideas? Please can you tell me if you like where I’m going with it or I should do both, and how it was for you when you started out?

    My introduction is:

      1. I can’t figure out how to add the follow button! Is that a built in feature in WordPress? I’ll have to keep researching it. My first time blogging and still learning.
