First Friday

New blogger? Welcome! Share a link to your first post, say hello to other new faces, and find your first few readers.

For other help:
If you’re not new and are looking for support or feedback, the Community Pool is the place for you!

For technical questions, visit the WordPress.com Support Forums.

To learn more about blogging, take a Blogging U. course.

To find, copy, and paste your link:
Head to your blog’s home page — not your dashboard, your blog itself. Click on the title of your post to open the individual post.

Highlight and copy the URL you see in your browser’s address bar, and paste the entire URL into a comment here.

Welcome to First Friday, a weekly open thread where any new blogger can share a link to his or her very first post with the larger WordPress.com community. To share your first post with us, copy and paste the link right into a comment here. If you’re not new, you can still be a part of First Fridays: visit a link or two, and leave the blogger a like or comment.

Please don’t use this as a space to share your first post…. that you published three years ago; ditto for simply sharing your latest post. Posts should have been published within the last month, and should be your first post. We’ll remove other posts to keep this space focused for new bloggers.

We ask that you help us keep this space focused by following a few additional guidelines:

  • We encourage anyone who shares a link to visit a few other bloggers. New readers for all!
  • When commenting, the third time is not the charm: don’t share the same link repeatedly, or in multiple First Friday threads. We’ll remove repeat posts.
  • Link directly to your new post, rather than to your blog generally — it makes it that much easier for folks to like the post or leave you comments.
  • Avoid repeated “Follow for a follow!” comments. (Tip: if you’re trying to build a readership, it’s much more effective to visit and comment on individual bloggers.)
  • To keep from losing your place while you visit others’ blogs, right-click on links to open them in a new tab or window.

    1. Hi, loved your header pic – shame it covers one of the people in the pic – maybe you could select a theme that doesn’t have a text pic in the middle of the pic? I use Canard (I think!).
I certainly agree with your reticence in regards to failure. I still only post on Facebook when I’m 100% proud of the post. My Twitter feed is linked to WordPress and shares automatically – aah the anonymity of my Twitter feed!
I suggest that you customise a side bar on your page that can show your archives, tags categories etc. and can link to social media. There are lots of options. 🙂 I look forward to reading more from you. 🙂

    1. Hi, great start! If you’re planning on writing multiple themes (I do) I suggest customising your page and using the category option. This helps you ‘file’ different topics as your page grows. If you check out my blog you can see how I’ve categorised different centuries and historical themes. Hope this helps 🙂

  1. I just started this new blog that seeks to give advice for millennials on their career and adulting in general. I would love to hear feedback. I am trying to make sure I present my entire social media presence as one brand. It sure takes a lot of energy and time! Any feedback would be appreciated and I will be looking on here to check out other blogs too! https://jasmineivhunter.com

    1. Welcome 🙂

Looks like you haven’t given your site a title yet! If you’d like to add one (we recommend it), you can do that by going to My Site > Customize > Site Identity.

    1. You have no need to apologize – your post reads very well and is interesting. People who don’t program might enjoy reading your first post too, about the interview candidate, but they might not know if the questions are easy or not!

      1. Thanks @griffin for your views on the post. Appreciate it so much. It would be really nice if you have any pointers on how to improve the blog forward. 😊

    2. You could perhaps write some posts about how people who were not experts could use very simple HTML on their blogs. I imagine many more people would find that kind of thing useful. But keep doing what you’re doing!

    1. Hi, looks like you have some great info for a blog and a book!
I suggest you customise your site to add a side bar so that you can have links to your archives, tags, categories, social media etc. I use Canard. If you are interested take a look – although I think it’s quite stark these days and you may find better inspiration looking through ‘themes’.
Can’t wait to read about your adventures!

    2. Welcome 🙂

If you look over to the right of your posts, you’ll see a bit of placeholder text — it’s meant to help you learn how to work with widgets, and you can remove or edit that by going to My Site > Customize > Widgets. Look for the Text Widget!

(For more on widgets, what they’re for, and how to use them, check out https://learn.wordpress.com/get-flashy/)

    1. Hi,
I suggest you add a side bar with categories as if you have multiple themes it will help you organise your writing and your readers find the topics that interest them. Take a look at mine and see how I’ve used categories. 🙂

    1. Welcome!

FYI: that link goes to your dashboard, which is private, so people won’t be able to see your site. The simplest way to get the public link is to go to your blog’s homepage and click on the post title. Then, copy the address you see in your browser’s address bar and use that.
