First Friday

New blogger? Welcome! Share a link to your first post, say hello to other new faces, and find your first few readers.

For other help:
If you’re not new and are looking for support or feedback, the Community Pool is the place for you!

For technical questions, visit the WordPress.com Support Forums.

To learn more about blogging, take a Blogging U. course.

To find, copy, and paste your link:
Head to your blog’s home page — not your dashboard, your blog itself. Click on the title of your post to open the individual post.

Highlight and copy the URL you see in your browser’s address bar, and paste the entire URL into a comment here.

Welcome to First Friday, a weekly open thread where any new blogger can share a link to his or her very first post with the larger WordPress.com community. To share your first post with us, copy and paste the link right into a comment here. If you’re not new, you can still be a part of First Fridays: visit a link or two, and leave the blogger a like or comment.

Please don’t use this as a space to share your first post…. that you published three years ago; ditto for simply sharing your latest post. Posts should have been published within the last month, and should be your first post. We’ll remove other posts to keep this space focused for new bloggers.

We ask that you help us keep this space focused by following a few additional guidelines:

  • We encourage anyone who shares a link to visit a few other bloggers. New readers for all!
  • When commenting, the third time is not the charm: don’t share the same link repeatedly, or in multiple First Friday threads. We’ll remove repeat posts.
  • Link directly to your new post, rather than to your blog generally — it makes it that much easier for folks to like the post or leave you comments.
  • Avoid repeated “Follow for a follow!” comments. (Tip: if you’re trying to build a readership, it’s much more effective to visit and comment on individual bloggers.)
  • To keep from losing your place while you visit others’ blogs, right-click on links to open them in a new tab or window.

    1. Welcome 🙂

I noticed that you still have some placeholder text in your blog’s sidebar, over to the right of your posts — you can remove or edit that by going to My Site > Customize > Widgets. Look for the Text Widget!

    1. I definitely enjoyed your first post and I agree. I write about whatever, whenever the mood strikes me. That’s what great about having an open-ended blog. I think I am also the most transparent when I’m writing posts for here as well. It’s freeing and uplifting at the same time. This is a great community. What I would suggest is every time you post add a featured photo. That really helps grab peoples eyes and pulls them towards you work. How you do that is when you go to post your blog the post settings will be up then you can add a featured image there. Also, its where you can add tags, make folders. Because the next thing you can do is add the text widget. This is where you can give people access to all your folders and archive post. Click on Customize>Widgets>Then you can chose where you want it footer/side bar etc>Then how you would like them displayed. Another suggestion I have is make sure you interact with people. On Monday there will be a community pool post like this one but were everyone posts too. I would suggest checking out blogs, leaving comments and mingling. That’s how I met some amazing people on here. And you can also post there as well and get even more feedback. Sorry this is long and I hope it helps. If you have a second check out my writings and let me know what you think. I’d really appreciate it. 😀 https://bloggerinablogworld.com/

    1. I like the thoughts on helping people shop and give them ideas of what to wear. If I could make a suggestion, when picking a site pick out a few clothing options (or even one really) and put the image in your post. Explain why you would wear it, the look your going for, where you would wear it etc. It will give people ideas on cute clothing combos to wear and lead them to the site to check out more stuff. 😀

      1. Thank you bloghollyblog this is something we are considering but being new to blogging we weren’t sure how legal copying the images is. We will definitely look into it. Also we are afraid that if we suggest one or two items, they will run out if sizes. Great suggestions!! Something we will really consider!!

    1. Congrats on publishing your first book! That is so awesome and a dream of mine. I followed you because I look forward to some pointers and tips but also because I want to see what more you have to share with the world. Two suggestion I would make is always try to have a featured photo its what really draws the eye and people to read your post. And when you list all the sites that sell your book embed the site link to the word so it’s easy to click and access. From here you can make it open in the same window or a new one. If you have a second could you check out some of my writings and let me know what you think? I’d really appreciate it. Thanks. https://bloggerinablogworld.com/

      1. Thank you so much for replying! I’m still very new to WordPress, so I am unfamiliar with a lot of the features. Your feedback is very much appreciated. I will definitely take a look at your site! Much appreciated.

      2. Hello again. I just glanced at your website and was taken away by how deep your work is. I think that if you are looking to be a published author, you are already well on your way! I can tell through your writing, that you write from the deepest part of your heart and that you are very existential. You already have the qualities necessary to be successful. I like how easy it is to navigate your website in general and the personal touch in general. unrest really got me 🙂 You get people to think and feel through your poetry, so keep up the good work! I figured out the links as well, thank you.

    1. I would post a link here to the article you want people to see first then after they are there let them poke around your site some. I read your Oregon post and I feel bad for you having to deal with all that traffic and people. Sending good Juju your way. Haha. As for writing I say write about whatever strikes you at the time. Funny/serious/fantasy… whatever mood hits channel it to your blog. If you have a second can you check out my writings and let me know what you think? I really appreciate it. Thanks 😀 https://bloggerinablogworld.com/

    1. One thing I noticed — you’ve used lot of tags on your latest post. The WordPress.com Reader actually filters out posts that use more than 15 tags and categories (combined) as an anti-spam measure, so using this many tags actually makes it harder for folks to find your posts. An easy way to start cutting down: get rid of super-general tags like “blog” or “love.” Think more specifically about your post and what it’s really about, and think about what *you* would search for to find a post like this.

    2. “You won’t be a published author your first draft. If you are….well then congratulations you %^*$” … Lol!

Some themes have a feature that makes your home page show a brief summary of your post, with a “Continue” button. You may want to consider using it as it makes the home page easier to navigate once you have more posts.

      1. If you look at your blog on a computer, you’ll see an area on the right that says “Text Widget” and has a bunch of instructions — that’s just there to help you understand how to use widgets, and you should either delete it or edit it to put in your own text. Lots of people use text widgets as a way to provide a little introduction about themselves and their blog.

This will explain widgets more generally, and give you some more examples: https://learn.wordpress.com/get-flashy/
