First Friday

New blogger? Welcome! Share a link to your first post, say hello to other new faces, and find your first few readers.

For other help:
If you’re not new and are looking for support or feedback, the Community Pool is the place for you!

For technical questions, visit the WordPress.com Support Forums.

To learn more about blogging, take a Blogging U. course.

To find, copy, and paste your link:
Head to your blog’s home page — not your dashboard, your blog itself. Click on the title of your post to open the individual post.

Highlight and copy the URL you see in your browser’s address bar, and paste the entire URL into a comment here.

Welcome to First Friday, a weekly open thread where any new blogger can share a link to his or her very first post with the larger WordPress.com community. To share your first post with us, copy and paste the link right into a comment here. If you’re not new, you can still be a part of First Fridays: visit a link or two, and leave the blogger a like or comment.

Please don’t use this as a space to share your first post…. that you published three years ago; ditto for simply sharing your latest post. Posts should have been published within the last month, and should be your first post. We’ll remove other posts to keep this space focused for new bloggers.

We ask that you help us keep this space focused by following a few additional guidelines:

  • We encourage anyone who shares a link to visit a few other bloggers. New readers for all!
  • When commenting, the third time is not the charm: don’t share the same link repeatedly, or in multiple First Friday threads. We’ll remove repeat posts.
  • Link directly to your new post, rather than to your blog generally — it makes it that much easier for folks to like the post or leave you comments.
  • Avoid repeated “Follow for a follow!” comments. (Tip: if you’re trying to build a readership, it’s much more effective to visit and comment on individual bloggers.)
  • To keep from losing your place while you visit others’ blogs, right-click on links to open them in a new tab or window.

    1. Welcome! FYI: that link goes to your dashboard, which is private, so people won’t be able to see your site. The simplest way to get the public link is to go to your blog’s main page and click on the post title. Then, copy the address you see in your browser’s address bar and use that. Here’s your site: http://ocdthings.wordpress.com/

    1. Hi Zabrina, great post about Tassie! I love Tassie but have only been down the West Coast. Would love to check out the East Coast sometime and include a few of your suggestions. Also, I thought your bucket list page was a great idea!

      1. Hiya! Thanks so much! Tassie is so beautiful, the east coast is completely different to the west coast so I would definitely recommend checking it out 🙂

    1. Looks good, you have nothing to worry about! If you want more views try to communicate with others on threads like this as my own blog has benefitted from that.

      1. Under “appearance” then widgets”. This way your friends, colleagues etc who aren’t on wordpress can follow you. You definitely want ANYONE to be able to follow! Since they don’t have a wordpress reader, those who follow you that way will get an email notification whenever you post a new blog. If you look at the homepage of my blog you’ll see where people can enter an email address and push a “follow” button. 🙂

  1. Question for the group. I’ve done two blog posts and am crafting my third for release maybe… next Sunday? I would love to know when you think the best day/time is to post a blog? Do people tend to read more of your blog on a weekend? Weekday? Morning? Evening? Late night? I’m curious if there is a “primetime” or if it’s just sort of all over the map. Let me know what you think! -marie aka http://www.goldisfromaliens.com

Also, the link in your profile goes to an empty blog — you’ll want to make sure that’s up to date, so folks on WordPress.com can find you by clicking on your name. You can update that here: https://wordpress.com/me/public-profile/

  2. Hi everyone! I started about 3 weeks ago but I’ve only just noticed this post. I have set up a blog which will follow my teaching journey and follow my battle to tackle educational inequality in our schools. My first post was about starting my journey, and why I am taking the route I chose. I hope you all enjoy and I would love to have some feedback from you. https://teaching-without-borders.com/2017/01/22/first-blog-post/

  3. So new at this I have spent more time on Google than the actual piece I wrote…..
Mine is personal so probably not necessarily something readers that don’t know me or my circumstances could relate to……I’m curious though, as all the comments I have so far-both in my blog and on Facebook, have been from family and friends. It’d be interesting to see what strangers think! Thank you in advance for taking the time to read….it’s quite long so grab yourself a cuppa before you start.
Enjoy, and have a lovely day!
    Love you 40-leven

    1. Howdy!

You’ve got a few text widgets that could use some attention — one in you sidebar that’s full of HTML code, and one in the footer that has placeholder text.

In the sidebar, if you’re trying to put a link there, you can try these instructions. Here’s a template; replace the bits in caps with your info:

      <a href="http://YOURLINKHERE.COM">TEXT YOU WANT TO SHOW HERE</a>

      So, for example, this:

      <a href="https://wordpress.com/dailypost">The Daily Post is awesome!</a>

      Will appear as this:

      The Daily Post is awesome!

(There’s also a shortcut — open a draft post, and create your text there. Then, go into the “text editor” view. The HTML will be there, and you can copy and paste it. Then trash the post.)

    1. One thing I noticed — you’re using a lot of tags and categories on some of your posts. The WordPress.com Reader actually filters out posts that use more than 15 tags and categories (combined) as an anti-spam measure, so using this many tags actually makes it harder for folks to find your posts, which is sad! If you cut your tags down to the most relevant, you’ll actually draw more readers.

      Welcome!

  5. I have always wanted to write, just did not know how to get started. Seeing the social and political angst in the country (USA) inspired me to begin. Here is my first blog, from January 19th.

    Why are you so Angry?

Thank you in advance for any feedback. I will now go check out some of your first posts.
