Community Pool

The place for feedback, advice, and friendly blogging chatter.

Have you just published a new post and are dying for some feedback? Did you recently start your blog and could use some layout or design advice from your more seasoned peers?

Did you just start blogging and you’re not sure how to get going? Has your blog been dormant for a while but you’d like to give it a jolt of life? Join our free Blogging 101 course (or any of our other offerings at Blogging U.).

Tap into the wisdom of The Daily Post blogging community and leave your question here in the comments. Others can then click through and offer input either on your site, or in the comments here (feel free to indicate which you’d prefer).

To help us make the Community Pool a productive space for discussion, here are some tips you might find useful:

TIP: To keep from losing your place in the comment thread while you visit others’ blogs, right-click on a link to open it in a new tab or window.

  • While you’re not required to, we encourage everyone who requests feedback to also reply to at least one or two other bloggers who need some help. Spread the love!
  • The Community Pool comments section can get quite big — and starting duplicate threads doesn’t help. Thanks for not posting the same question more than once!
  • If you’re looking for quality feedback, be as specific as you can. Questions about a particular post tend to draw more comments than ones about entire blogs. Questions about specific design elements are more likely to be answered than ones asking for general layout advice.
  • We discourage leaving links without a more substantive message or question. These are often overlooked by other bloggers, and we frequently remove them to make the comment reading experience smoother.
  • Please keep all comments civil and constructive. The idea is to have fun — it’s a pool, after all!
  • If you haven’t looked at our Commenting Guidelines in a while, now might be a good time.
  • No running on the deck.

  1. Hello people. Today I come for “friendly blogging chatter”. Basically advice. And the mood I’m currently in, I’ll probably not even mind if this goes ignored. I will, however, be glad if you connect.

The thing isn’t that I can’t write. I can. But I also can’t. How? I am afraid. Today I am speaking about this but I also feel this tension in my nerves atm. Like for example, I started writing a post yesterday. The thing with me is that I’m mostly writing in my head. Almost always. So I had gone to visit my grandparent’s place and by the time I had returned, I had already written it all. Like some people think, and some think-write, you know? But when I tried putting it here, I had to stopp. I wrote the first lines, and then there was this word I couldn’t remember and I tried searching for it, and then I gave up. Today I couldn’t think where to put a dash, and I thought it was going stupid anyway and I deleted what I going to write. I understand myself the techniques of “just-write” and I do that in my diary. There I don’t fear anything. But I want to be free here again and not feel so…weird. I’m posting this comment. PHEW.

    1. I had an English teacher that had us do the “just write” thing. Most of the time she wouldn’t read it, but some times she would. I learned to be relaxed enough because she wouldn’t be looking at most of the stuff I wrote, but then on the days she would it helped me get over the stress of someone else reading it.

You might not be about to take any classes, right now, or if you can you might not get a teacher that would do that, so maybe that wouldn’t work for you, so I have another idea.

You might try writing something that if other people read it, you wouldn’t feel it would represent you. Write something factual but also subjective, like a review. I think that might help you get over the block that comes when you’re worried about someone else reading what you’ve written.

    2. Something that is helping me a lot with this very problem is: “Great books are not written, they are re-written”. I tend to have to write, and then re-write a post, several times. I guarantee you that the first draft (whether in your head, on paper, or in wordpress) is not always the best one. You’re probably beating yourself up that you can’t remember the entire post word for word. Just try to remember the feeling of what you mind-wrote – go back to that place. It’ll come back. 🙂

      1. I hope so! You know, when I usually start writing something on WordPress, it often happens that I delete it or leave it just after a little writing because of this thing. This thing or fear or whatever. I think I’ll begin by writing in my diary and re-writing it, and if it feels good then I’ll add it on my blog. Thank you so much for taking out your time to help!

      2. No problem. My recommendation further to what you’ve just said, it just get it out there. The more you post and write, the more confident you’ll feel. I think it’s scary at first because you’re putting stuff out there, and no one is reading, commenting etc. After some time though, ‘your’ people will find you. Plus, every time I’ve held back or didn’t say it all, I’ve always gotten comments about how much people loved the post, and realised there was no reason to hold back. Happy writing!

    1. Well about videos, you just paste the link in the editor and it is supposed to just load. Your blog can show up on google searches on google in a number of ways. The tags, categories, as well as the pictures and videos you posts. Hope that helps

  2. Hey everyone, I’ve been going through the comments here and looking at people’s blogs, and just thought I’d get my own name out there a little more.

I’m writing about liquor and other spirits: How they smell, how they taste, how the affect you when you drink them. I feel like if I’m going to be writing, I should write about something I enjoy, and this is one of those things.

Since I’m just starting, I’m trying to keep my articles very focused on my subject matter, though hopefully I’ll be able to add some different kinds of content later on.

I’m hopeful that what I write can help people take chances trying new drinks that they otherwise wouldn’t have, or maybe avoid ones that aren’t so good. I know it can be hard to try something unfamiliar, so I hope that I can help people out there get past that kind of unease when they read about something I’ve had and I share my experience.

And if you think yourself to be the helpful sort, don’t be afraid to make suggestions! I’m always looking for new things to try, but if I don’t know about it I can’t taste it, and if I can’t taste it I can’t write about it.

Thanks in advance to anyone who takes a look 🙂

    1. I like it, looks nice. Striking, nice impact with the header. Colours are cool. I would say add more pics into each post, be careful about how you load the pics (they should ‘embed’ into the writing area to make them look better and for ease of reading and possibly play with the post formatting – as ex. – using different font styles to put emphasis on what is core to each post. Well done you for acting as guardian for your sister, I’m sure a lot of people will relate to your blog. xxx

  5. Hey Guys! Hope everyone is well. I’d like to get feedback from experienced bloggers, if any of you are about. I’m toying with changing a few things and wanted opinions.

    1. Pop-ups for subscription – I tend to hate these but understand it may be a necessary evil for marketing purposes. Have any of you gone down this road and lived to tell the tale?

    2. RSS vs Newsletter – I’ve had a few unsubscribes because I run my site on RSS, and post about 3 times a week. I realise that is a lot for some people, so I’m considering a once-weekly newsletter with all the previous week’s content. Any thoughts on running your blog either way?

Many thanks in advance for any input/opinions.

    Thank you
    Lee xxx

p.s. any other feedback on my blog and site is always welcome too – in a “If you show me yours I’ll show you mine” kind of way. 🙂

  6. Here I am with a new blog and three posts done. I am completely new to blogging and, in a way, feel like I have just started school again – there is so much to learn. I’m pleased to see a couple of visitors but I haven’t exactly said anything gripping (yet) so no ‘likes’. Any advice on encouraging traffic please. Also, I’m not sure how to find bloggers describing Hikes/Walks (in UK or anywhere else in the world) who also have blogs…the Recommended list seems to show the same blogs. Would appreciate any comments (good or bad) about my posts so far.

  8. Hi all,
I have recently taken a break over the holidays, but have just re-posted in my blog. I am a teacher who will be leaving at the end of this year. My blog is focused on how to go about making such a large career change as well as looking at the reasons for it. One thing I really struggle with is creating discussion in my blog. I don’t want it to just be a ranting place for teachers who are dissatisfied in their job but instead a community for teachers and ex-teachers who are frustrated with something they used to love. My hope was to create a space where people could receive uplifting and encouragement while also share their breaking points so that any struggling teachers know that they are not alone.
Anyway, if you fit into any of those categories, I’d love for you to check it out. Leave a comment or a question. I’m also looking for anyone who would like to guest blog.

  9. Hello, I have taken a pretty long break from blogging. I made it to my one year anniversary. The only problem is that I am a completely different person than I was a year ago. The very thing that made me start this blog, and entertainment blog, no longer really interest me. So I revamped my blog quite a bit and now I am in limbo content wise.

I would like some feedback and the new look and concept.

  10. Hi,
I am just starting to blog about programming and reviews. I would love some feedback because I’m very new. A few posts I have published already and am pretty impressed with myself. Yes, I know I should not brag because the really thing that matters is your impression.
