Have you just published a new post and are dying for some feedback? Did you recently start your blog and could use some layout or design advice from your more seasoned peers?
Did you just start blogging and you’re not sure how to get going? Has your blog been dormant for a while but you’d like to give it a jolt of life? Join our free Blogging 101 course (or any of our other offerings at Blogging U.).
Tap into the wisdom of The Daily Post blogging community and leave your question here in the comments. Others can then click through and offer input either on your site, or in the comments here (feel free to indicate which you’d prefer).
To help us make the Community Pool a productive space for discussion, here are some tips you might find useful:
TIP: To keep from losing your place in the comment thread while you visit others’ blogs, right-click on a link to open it in a new tab or window.
- While you’re not required to, we encourage everyone who requests feedback to also reply to at least one or two other bloggers who need some help. Spread the love!
- The Community Pool comments section can get quite big — and starting duplicate threads doesn’t help. Thanks for not posting the same question more than once!
- If you’re looking for quality feedback, be as specific as you can. Questions about a particular post tend to draw more comments than ones about entire blogs. Questions about specific design elements are more likely to be answered than ones asking for general layout advice.
- We discourage leaving links without a more substantive message or question. These are often overlooked by other bloggers, and we frequently remove them to make the comment reading experience smoother.
- Please keep all comments civil and constructive. The idea is to have fun — it’s a pool, after all!
- If you haven’t looked at our Commenting Guidelines in a while, now might be a good time.
- No running on the deck.

Happy New Year everyone! My name is Mark. I am about to share my debut psychological thriller novel with the world. A task which seems very daunting but one that could be made less so with your support. I need as many followers as possible behind me on this journey. So, if a compelling story and psychological roller coaster sounds like it might be for you, please stop by and check out my blog. I will be forever grateful! Take care, Mark.

Hey all at the community pool!
So The break is over and I’m sure you’re all eager to get back to work… Well to pass the time why not check out my film review blog! Hopefully you’ve all watched Star Wars and if you haven’t, WHY NOT? I’ve got a great Star Wars: The Force Awakens review that I really enjoyed writing and I hope you guys enjoy reading too. I’ve also just released my plans for 2016 with a ‘New Year’s Blogolution’ post where I discuss the future plans for my blog such as a new topic i’m calling ‘Synopsis’, where I debate the political and cultural side of film.

Star Wars is synonymous with my childhood. My family and I couldn’t wait for the new movie to come out. We all remember sitting in line outside of the theater when the last set of movies came out watching people dressed up have light saber duels. I have to be honest though. I went in expecting to be disappointed. How could any movie fill expectations this HIGH? But, somehow JJ pulled it off. I immensely enjoyed the movie despite the over promotion and Star Wars everything everywhere. It warms my heart to see little children running around getting as excited as we were about the movie. Its a whole new generation loving the movies. I can only hope they continue to be as good as this one was in the future. Great review. Thanks for continuing the excitement for me.

I can take some reasonably good photos but I know there’s so much more it can do for me. Quite interested in night shots and long exposure but it all sounds very complicated for a simple person like me lol
LikeLiked by 1 person
To put it simply it’s all about ISO, shutter speed and aperture. If you’re looking into night shooting you’d need a pretty sturdy tripod as you’re be shooting longer exposure times in order to let as much light in as possible, a high iso count will make the camera more sensitive to light and help as would a larger aperture although that would affect sharpness of the image. With Long Exposure you’re looking at long exposure times but a lower iso count (especially if shooting during the day) as your want the sensor’s light sensitivity to be low in order to allow a long shutter time without making the image completely bright and unusable. This article might be of some use; http://www.exposureguide.com/long-exposure-photography-tips.htm

I try to stay in the realm of 1,000 words, but I am not always good at it. It’s hard when you have a lot to say!
LikeLiked by 2 people
That’s a good rule. I’ve found most of mine have been 1,400-1,800 words (this was ~1,800), which has seemed to go okay for me so far… But yeah, if I could somehow chop it down a wee bit, it might be beneficial… It’s so hard. I’m even looking online right now for guidance, and there is so much out there! In my early days of grief, I’ve had lots to say, maybe it’ll get easier to cut words as I continue on this blogging journey…
LikeLiked by 2 people
I guess you just have to wait and say. The word count can also depend on the point of your blog. If you are flushing out thoughts and not overly concerned with readership, then by all means pour your heart out. But if you find you have a message for others who have experienced a similar loss, maybe you tighten up the word count so your message is clear. So many ways to think about this, huh?!
LikeLiked by 2 people
Yeah, it’s always tricky. I’ve found a few of my lengthy (>2,000 words), medically oriented posts have gone my version of viral (~1,500 hits). And, with the rest, it varies. Much of my audience has experienced similar losses, and it seems, in this case, people crave this length. Though, who knows. My next scheduled post is my shortest yet (~800 words), so we’ll see what happens. I’d venture to guess readership is entirely dependent on the topic and how engaging the post is though…

I didn’t think it was boring. I think a finance series is a great idea, and by making it a weekly feature it will likely gain traction over time since people will know to expect it and will start looking for it.
However, you do have a few typos and things like that you may want to fix – for instance the 1st sentence of your second paragraph says “I was never in your checkings account” instead of “it was never”. There are three or four little things like that throughout the post.

One other thing is you may want to make a “Sunday Savings” category or tag so readers can find all of those posts easily. I didn’t notice one on this post.

I find it helpful to preview the post and re-read it in that format. The change from the way it looks in the post editor to the way it will look on the site makes it easier to catch mistakes, because your brain can’t automatically fill in what you expect to be there the way it can when you look at the same format over and over.

Hi all. Will be checking lots of the blogs posted here. There is something I can’t figure out…may be pretty simple but, my blog stats show lots of ‘views’ of recently posted articles/essays but the actual visitor number is very low in comparison. Does that just mean a few visitors are looking around at different posts? -thanks bzirkworld.com
LikeLiked by 5 people
“Visits” only get counted if they go to your home page. I’m pretty sure that’s why your views can go up but your visits remain the low. I’m still new but I’m 90% sure that’s how it works.

I just wanted to clarify that whether a visitor gets counted or not doesn’t depend on that person visiting the homepage — per our Stats page:

Hi, and thank you for the feedback!
Can’t promise my expertise will be any good, but okay. (And before I get to your writing, can I just say I really enjoyed your photography? I wish I was that good.)
Your writings are really good. The flash fiction format really works for wordpress and the way you use the general imagery within the text is skillful. The prose is good. I honestly don’t know how much “critique” I can give you except maybe keep on practicing? At times I’d read a word choice that jarred me, or I’d wonder what the point of a certain musing is, but those are things that come and go with practice and experimentation. My favourite thing to do, when I feel like my prose needs a boost, is to get a book by someone whose writing style I love, and just soak up the music, if that makes any sense. (Someone once said to “fill your head with the music of good sentences.” I think it was Dani Shapiro.) Like I said, it’s good stuff – keep at it!

Wow, thank you. I was not expecting such a detailed response. I really do appreciate it. I will keep experimenting and practicing. I understand what you mean by certain words that jarred you. Whenever I reread my own writings I get catch some things I didn’t like here and there. I will definitely soak up the music of great sentences haha. Thank you again. You’ve been a great encouragement!

I’m glad that was useful to you. If this is something you could do, perhaps you can keep your posts in draft form for a week before you post, and re-read them right before. It could be helpful if you need some distance from your writing before you can edit.

Also please check out my last one too as I didn’t get to post it here for feedback it’s entitled Of God’s And Men. Anyways here is my most recent piece The Monopoly On Morality:

I’m a devout Catholic so I have to disagree with you on rejecting religion. Despite that, I love your writing style and I do like how you argue respectfully. These days, it’s not something a lot of people do–it’s more like people sneering and flaming at each other on the Internet with “I don’t believe in your ridiculous sky-fairy, you [insert obscene name here]!” And you do make some good points that many religious people should pay attention to.

Thank you for the compliments. I try not to bring that sneering attitude to the blog, I’m here to inform and educate, not comdemn. I understand what religion means to people and how deeply rooted it’s dogma and rhetoric are in people’s psyche. I know that I can’t help anyone if they see me only as an enemy. You can’t spit on people then expect them to listen to what you have to say.

I completely agree with Luna Cooler. It is refreshing to find someone capable of civil discourse. I’ll be taking a closer look later when I have a quiet moment.

Thanks for the look and come back anytime. I will always try to keep my posts honest, to the point and as intellectually sound as I can make them. I don’t want to burn bridges, I’m looking to build them.

I like the new design. The ABOUT page is pretty important in my view, so I hope you’ll put one up soon. As for breaking up the paragraphs, I strongly urge you to do that. Three or four lines per paragraph maximum will make the text so much easier to read.

About page is up, a full one. And really, you still think I need the paragraphs smaller? I like paragraphs that flow and follow the same subject and tone. Also it don’t want it to seem choppy, it affects the tone of how I make my points. I will try again to shorten them but if I feel it affects my overall point you’ll just have to suffer.
Also I saw your blog, interesting but I’ve never liked poetry, this is due to the fact I can rarely make heads or tails of it. I wish I could understand more but suffice it to say most poetry to me may as well be in Greek. I know a few poems and poets here and there but if you forced me to nail down my favorite it’s still Shel Silverstein. My teacher used to have to stop from reading it because she didn’t want me to know the peom when she read one at random to the class. No offense meant about your blog, I’m sure your work is wonderful, I just don’t understand it. I feel like I’ve just told Jackson Pollock his paintings are weird. Sorry for the long paragraphs. 😉

Hi everyone, I started blogging again recently and would love if anyone popped over to check it out, particularly my last few pieces as I have been struggling for traffic on my blog. It’s mainly a lifestyle and travel blog…

Thank you! 🙂

Your blog looks fab and I look forward to reading more. One thing, the theme and the background colour are a bit too white maybe? Love the title font but again maybe it could do with some back colour. That’s just me though!

Thank you so much, glad you like it! I’ll take your advice on board and maybe add a splash of colour in there somewhere haha 🙂

Just wow! I immediately fell in love with the ascetics of your blog. It’s so pleasing to the eyes! Great job on that. I looked through a few of your most recent posts and I loved them. Plus, I’m also a huge lover of travel/photography. I recently started getting into it so I don’t have too much content just yet, but looking through your stuff is very inspiring. I just had to give you a follow 🙂 Keep up the great work and I look forward to seeing more from you! Cheers!

Hey there, Emily!
I hope you get more traffic soon, your writing is great. As mentioned in one of my previous posts, (https://texaninsouthafrica.wordpress.com/2016/01/02/blogging-tips-and-tricks/) the way I have seen that increases traffic is by doing exactly what you’ve done here- interaction with other blogs! 🙂 It’ll grow slowly but surely.
My only question would be- Are all of the pictures your own? They are great and your use with them is good- just curious if you took them all, and if you did, then you should say so because they all look very professional.
I was also a waitress. 😉 Glad to meet you!

Hi Sarah,
I loved going through your blog! Especially your About page. I love how genuine and honest you are. I’m also a Christian and to see your love for Him is a blessing. I just had to give you a follow!
As for your writing itself, I definitely enjoyed it. You have talent and I would like to encourage you to keep it up. The only thing I’d suggest is if you made categories for your blog. That way viewers can easily find specific types of posts. For example, you can group all your poetry together, your short stories together, your thoughts together, etc. Other than that, your blog is perfect 🙂 I wish you the best of luck and would love to see more from you! Cheers!

Hi John! Thank you for your kind words they mean so much!! I’m working on the categories, I’m not really sure how they work but thank you for bringing it to my attention, that’ll help me to remember to keep figuring it out!
I ABSOLUTELY loved your blog! It’s really cool and inspiring, and I can’t wait to see more! I really like how you ask a question at the end of your blog, I’ve been thinking about doing that, but I get worried about what people would say…but I think it’s worth a shot! And I’m so encouraged that you’re a Christian as well! Thanks again for the advice!!

And thank you. That really means a lot to me! Likewise to you as well! I think you should try it. People won’t ALWAYS comment but when they do, it’s nice because it’ll sometimes start a discussion and you can also see where they are coming from. I enjoy interacting with my followers. But anyways, I wish you the best of luck!

Hey there, Georgia! You gained a follower from Texas!
As for the future husband, stay true and faithful and your guy will come along in due time. 🙂 Everything happens for a reason, and maybe that reason right now is because you and/or him are being molded into who you need to be for each other. Things happen in mysterious ways- if a hundred things hadn’t gone just right, my husband and I wouldn’t have ever met- we are from two different countries! Lots of things had to fall into place for us to meet, and even more for us to continue a relationship. 🙂
Nice to meet you! I look forward to more of your posts!

I would love for you to visit my newest posts on Cliffs of Moher in Ireland and Snow Shoeing in Lake Tahoe. I am always looking for feedback. Too short, too long. Too many photos? Not enough?
And I am always looking for new people to follow and be followed who love to travel or who are just interesting people to connect with. I am happy to check out your blogs as well!

Hi all. My blog is over at https://habitatforheavyhearts.wordpress.com/ and I am just looking for genuine, honest feedback on the content.
2016 has just started and I am hoping for good things for the blog but also good things for me to find, especially blogs along a similar theme to mine.

Your writing is good, and your content is interesting. I like how you use pictures to write—the only thing that you could use more of is concrete detail. The parts where you use a lot seem to draw you in and make you feel like you’re really there in the picture. Your word-related posts and reviews are also interesting.
I write a short story/experimental fiction (sort of) blog over at http://acolorofherown.wordpress.com/ if you’re looking for anything like that.

Hi Violet, thank you very much for the feedback. When you say concrete detail what do you mean, can you give some examples of where I do it well and where it lacks. Ill go check that blog link you gave me to check out your work too, oh and thank you for the follow.

In your post “Ocean View” where you are describing the pier sidings (second paragraph, second sentence) was a really good example of concrete detail, and where you describe opening the 7up. Details like that really make the story feel alive.

Loved the layout you chose! It makes your blog that much more enticing haha. I liked your most recent inspiration for the week. As an aspiring artist, sometimes I feel like I’m not good enough so it definitely encouraged me. I enjoyed reading through your poems. Especially the one about rain. Great job. As a fellow writer, I gave you a follow 🙂 Keep up the great work!

I hope you’re all having a blessed and wonderful new year. I haven’t been posting since the late of December and I’m afraid I lost all my readership. Anyway, I’m here to share a lesson I have pondered on and learned at the very start of this year. I hope you can give this post a view 🙂
Thank you!

Nice blog – look forward to reading more! Is being good as good as being just a little bit bad sometimes? 🙂
LikeLiked by 2 people
Why not? That is what I talk about in the essay, but you have to consider the bad that is there, that you perhaps can’t help doing yourself, to understand how to be good, isn’t it? That’s what I’ve come to believe anyway!
Thank you for dropping by!

Hello. I have a page for articles and such. It’s useful for the few that use it but I’m looking for your advice on the best way to collect and share useful articles.
I’ve used Scoop.it. and Storify but would be interested to know how you have approached similar issues and what worked.
Thanks!

Hi there! I’ve been blogging on and off for about 5 years now, nothing serious – just me rambling and posing questions and arguments which comes to mind. The problem is that apart from the odd like or comment on my posts, I dont get any real feedback on the actual posts. My goal is to get some feedback, comments, thoughts, ideas challenging or agreeing with my opinion – to get a better understanding of us humans really. What I am doing wrong? Please help. Thank you, i look forward to hearing from you! Nanuschka.wordpress.com

I would say the best place to get feedback is in the Community Pool. If you want to start a discussion on your actual site, I would suggest making that clear from the beginning of your post. Especially if you have an engaged audience, this should be pretty easy to accomplish. Maybe having a weekly “discussion session” with your readers would be a great way to introduce this! It seems like you talk about a variety of topics, so if you do run with an idea like this, you should have no problem coming up with topics of discussion. I hope this helps, and good luck!

Hi! I ran through your blog…I will suggest you to make some changes in blog(tough part)…You need to have better theme. also structure your blog for batter navigation using categories and menu. I always believe that you should blog about how you feel and what you like, you don’t have to play on someone’s tunes. At the same time, you need to find right people with whom you can interact. Also, try to be more elaborate on About section so someone who land sup at your blog can understand what your blog is all about! Hope this helps you!

Hello! Just read your most recent post- well written and entertaining! I did see that you said the ‘Free State’?! South Africa?! I went to your “About” page, only to be disappointed that your identity is left up to our imagination. 😦 That would be my only advice to give, add in a bit of what makes you, you, like where you re from, maybe. (I talk about this more in one of my recent posts: https://texaninsouthafrica.wordpress.com/2016/01/02/blogging-tips-and-tricks/) Also, the layout of your theme is nice, but potentially a little dark- maybe a splash of color?
