Have you just published a new post and are dying for some feedback? Did you recently start your blog and could use some layout or design advice from your more seasoned peers?
Tap into the wisdom of The Daily Post blogging community and leave your question here in the comments. Others can then click through and offer input either on your site, or in the comments here (feel free to indicate which you’d prefer).
To help us make the Community Pool a productive space for discussion, here are some tips you might find useful:
TIP: To keep from losing your place in the comment thread while you visit others’ blogs, right-click on a link to open it in a new tab or window.
- While you’re not required to, we encourage everyone who requests feedback to also reply to at least one or two other bloggers who need some help. Spread the love!
- The Community Pool comments section can get quite big — and starting duplicate threads doesn’t help. Thanks for not posting the same question more than once!
- If you’re looking for quality feedback, be as specific as you can. Questions about a particular post tend to draw more comments than ones about entire blogs. Questions about specific design elements are more likely to be answered than ones asking for general layout advice.
- We discourage leaving links without a more substantive message or question. These are often overlooked by other bloggers, and we frequently remove them to make the comment reading experience smoother.
- Please keep all comments civil and constructive. The idea is to have fun — it’s a pool, after all!
- If you haven’t looked at our Commenting Guidelines in a while, now might be a good time.
- No running on the deck.

Hi. So, I got bored this morning and did a Dangerous Thing. I moved things around on my geeky food blog, Skill Up Skillet! Both the right and left content bars have been completely reworked. Do stop by and let me know what you think of the updated layout! I’d really love to be able to insert the bio pic and quickie About blurb just above the Feed Your Fandom menu but I’m not sure it’s possible to do so. What do you think? What would you like to see different?
Also I posted September’s Featured Recipe last week. For those who voted, congrats, you can now have literal diabetes on a plate a la South Park’s Powdered Donut Pancake Surprise: http://skillupskillet.com/2015/09/11/septembers-featured-recipe-powdered-donut-pancake-surprise/.
Seriously, I put an actual disclaimer on the recipe because (hopefully) no one is going to eat a plate of 9 pancakes with half a dozen homemade deep fried donuts alone. Swing on by and let me know what you think! (No, really. For having voted on it, not many people have checked out the post. Show the Lei some love?) Will poke around other blogs as much as I can; rush season at work is a terrible, terrible thing.

That’s strange, I’m really confused now. Are you not seeing the Read More tags on my posts? With incredibly few exceptions (really short non-recipe articles) I have Read More tags on every post, just before the recipe.

Hi aul, good for you on getting yourself out there on smash words! Personally, I think your background is a bit too busy, but, with that said, I am not a regular visitor/reader of your blog so I am unaware of the significance of the icon and what it means.

Well thank you very much 🙂
Ah, I understand what you’re saying. The icon that constitutes the background is my self-made logo for my book series. It’s the initials for “The Golden Lands”, all wrapped together (a cursive T, G, and L). Thanks for the feedback!

Hey, Aul, I love the writing and the idea. (If I can make a visual suggestion? This could be me, because my desktop is wide– I know people mostly use their phones nowadays, but maybe make the logo-on-repeat a little faded so it’s not as distracting? Or maybe make it a flat yellow background so the logo in the header pops by contrast?) Beautiful site and works either way, and good luck in your publishing adventures. 🙂

LikeLiked by 2 people
About pages are always a bit tricky to write. My advice would be to keep things simple, think about what you actually want to tell people about yourself, what your blog is so far and what you want it to become.
If you want a place to post poetry and any other creative writing that pops into your mind then say that. You can set yourself goals or set out plans for projects, it really is up to you.

Haahha hey Lori! Yup that is exactly what I meant! Because if the parents will read what you are preaching out to them…maybe it will be easier for them to talk to the kids too! Just an idea! Sure I will if I think of something I’ll totally spam ur blog xD Haha great to you meet you! 🙂

Yes, middle school kids are a unique brand of human, so a blog like this is always appreciated. I really like your layout, design, and use of images. Two observations – 1) Do you see your audience as the parents, kids, or both? The first two articles were definitely directed to parents, but on the most recent one, it was hard to tell. 2) You may want to utilize the More tool in your posts, which enables you to show a greater number of articles on your home page without too much scrolling.

Thanks for this feedback! One of the things we really wanted to do was create a forum where Middles and their parents could connect over the topics we write about. We have thus far been pretty heavy on the parenting end of things, but we’d like to start adding more content for the Middles, themselves–particularly after one of our younger readers mentioned they’d like to read more about bullying, overprotective parents, and that sort of thing. I think, though, in light of your observation, we may need to find a clearer way to do this. Any ideas?

You can determine how many posts you show on your blog’s homepage (no paid upgrade necessary!) — you’ll need to go to My Sites (at the top-left corner of the screen) > WP Admin > Settings > Reading, and there change the number of posts in the “Blog pages show at most” setting. You’ll also want to make sure your “Scroll infinitely” box is left unchecked.
