Have you just published a new post and are dying for some feedback? Did you recently start your blog and could use some layout or design advice from your more seasoned peers?
Tap into the wisdom of The Daily Post blogging community and leave your question here in the comments. Others can then click through and offer input either on your site, or in the comments here (feel free to indicate which you’d prefer).
To help us make the Community Pool a productive space for discussion, here are some tips you might find useful:
TIP: To keep from losing your place in the comment thread while you visit others’ blogs, right-click on a link to open it in a new tab or window.
- While you’re not required to, we encourage everyone who requests feedback to also reply to at least one or two other bloggers who need some help. Spread the love!
- The Community Pool comments section can get quite big — and starting duplicate threads doesn’t help. Thanks for not posting the same question more than once!
- If you’re looking for quality feedback, be as specific as you can. Questions about a particular post tend to draw more comments than ones about entire blogs. Questions about specific design elements are more likely to be answered than ones asking for general layout advice.
- We discourage leaving links without a more substantive message or question. These are often overlooked by other bloggers, and we frequently remove them to make the comment reading experience smoother.
- Please keep all comments civil and constructive. The idea is to have fun — it’s a pool, after all!
- If you haven’t looked at our Commenting Guidelines in a while, now might be a good time.
- No running on the deck.

Allo all. Leisel from Skill Up Skillet here for another Community Pool of ohgodI’mstillsickcanIjustsleepnow. For those I haven’t met, hi! I run a weekly updated geek and game themed food blog. The kitchen is my battleground and each recipe I conquer helps me grind my cooking skills to the next level. If you appreciate food and/or gaming but don’t like cookbooks, probably you’ll love me. Humor and sarcastic wit abound! I’m apparently also crazy and taking two blogging courses at once, plus working on future features. Woo.
As always, I’m always seeking new followers and new blogs to follow. Do you have any other communities, groups, or forums you frequent to network with others with similar interests? If so, I’d love to hear about it. I recently left one FB group for another and already it’s a much better atmosphere. I suck at networking and I’m trying I swear. (I’m hopelessly antisocial and kind of an accidental jerk; blogging and networking helps. You should see how bad my people skills were before I was the leader of a guild in World of Warcraft!)
It’s summer here in the States and it sucks. Heat is bad. Humidity is worse. It’s okay, I’m here for you with an ultra-easy, two ingredient recipe to cool you down: Portal Slushies! The cake is only a lie because I’m making it for my birthday in September. Oh, you’re interested and want to see it? Why not give me a follow and we can celebrate my birthday together! Here’s the slushie recipe: https://skillupskillet.wordpress.com/2015/07/23/portal-slushies/
Also, I just joined Bloglovin’ this morning and can’t figure out how to make the widget work. Anyone with Bloglovin who can offer a helping hand? I’ll love you for it. Lots. I want to add the widget under the Kitchen Fund. I’m betting that by the time I post this I’ll be at home because I’m sick of being sick at work. Will do my best to offer feedback where and when I can (but throw me a bone tomorrow, there’s a terrible training at work and boo).

Hi there! Regarding Bloglovin’ do you mean a link widget? It apparently doesn’t work for WordPress.com accounts but I got around it by downloading the Bloglovin’ image (same page as the widgety thing) then adding it as an image to my sidebar with a URL link back to Bloglovin’. I felt very clever! (although I assume this was the easiest thing in the world!) Hope this helps, apologies if it’s already been answered 🙂

If we blog here on wordpress are we allowed to get a Bloglovin widget at all? I’m confused.

Yes I think so! It’s doesn’t support free WordPress sites (hence the image shortcut) but works for self hosted WordPress. I’ve seen loads of blogs that are WordPress using it. Think of it as a broker for blog sites – it collects them all up so that all the different platforms can be viewed in one place 🙂

Hi cher! What exactly do you want to know? Is it about the content of your posts? Your theme/layout? It´s hard to give proper feedback when you don´t know what exactly you´d like to have it about.

Hi Cher.
For your theme I´d choose a different header image (since it´s featured-like mine was) and maybe also some new colors matching your new header.
Then I´d recommend choosing one font and then sticking to same sizes (one for text, one for headings, and one for second headings), it makes it easier to read that way.
Also I´d suggest making an own page for your disclaimer, instead of putting it right on top of each post.
To your content, I´m not really an expert in your topics, so I can´t really say much there. Sorry.
I hope the rest helped! Have a great evening.

For me the only part that feels a little weaker is the font and look of the blog title ‘Look Through My Lens’ – not sure why – the name is great – and the ‘I came, i saw, i captured’ font is great but something about the main font doesn’t capture me as much [sorry, i know criticism is hard to take and with this kind of thing i am completely not an artist type so my opinion should count for little] maybe it’s just that i like everything else more…

This is a very good question, as I am a new blogger as well.
I have noticed, for me personally, all my site hits, seem to generate on the weekends and in the evenings. But it could just be because the majority of my followers and visitors are family and friends at this point. I don’t have much of a following…yet. 🙂
I think with so many bloggers around the world, there may not be a set peak hour to post. I am of course, unsure of this because I am new as well.
I hope this helps, and I guess I am kind of hoping for an answer to this as well.

I think the quality of the post and using tags are more important than timing, though Megan makes a good point about a worldwide audience. If you’re using a popular tag, the people who see your post will be in your time zone and online close to the time you’re posting. My approach is to post at different times, but that’s as much an accident as anything. I’m in the UK too. The biggest proportion of my visitors are from the US, but I’m really happy that I’ve had visits from over 100 countries in my first year of blogging.

I blog from the UK and I find that most of my posts have been viewed but people in the U.S. personally, I don’t think there is a right time to post, I’ve read that posting in the morning is good for traffic because people tend to check their WordPress when they get up, to be honest, it’s difficult to estimate what time that is with so many people visiting from all over the world, it’s a different time of day in all those places. I think the other answer is pretty good, concentrate on content and good tags/categories, that deprives traffic to your blog better than any posting time will. I’ve posted from as early as 6 am to as late (early?) as 1am and still had visits. I really don’t think it matters, although the I’ve only been at this a year myself so I might be wrong 🙂

Personally, I’m not keen on the blog theme, it seems like it will be very busy when you post more stuff. I would personally reduce your tag line to something much shorter, basically, you should write in there what to expect from your blog so something more like “my thoughts in words” or something like that.
I liked your ‘about’ but you need to work on your navigation and also proof read a little bit before you post. Maybe head to the dash board and check out more themes and organise a menu that can go from one place like ‘home’ – where all your posts are to ‘about’ – your about page.
You can asses the menu edit area if you go to your dash > WP admin > on the left hand side of the screen towards the bottom hover over Appearance and click menus. That’s should help you get it sorted, don’t be too afraid to muck about in the customiser either, as long as you don’t hit save, you can look at ways of customising and creating your home page a bit better without making any actual changes 🙂

Hello everyone.
New here, obviously. I have recently started a new blog. Its about 3 weeks old. Precious little thing. I think I am on the right track. I am looking for ANY input. Writing. Layout. Navigation etc. I have a lot of super duper great ideas, that I hope turn out great “on paper”, so having as many tips and tricks up my sleeve would be, just awesome. I haven’t quite found my niche yet, but I think I’ve got something really good brewing.
Also, I notice a lot of bloggers, whether here on WP or other sites, have Nicknames for their followers. (example- I’m MomHood so my followers would be nicknamed Hoodlums..ha ha ha) I would LOVE any feedback on some awesome wordplay for nicknames.
Thanks in advance to any feedback that I get! You all rock! Visit me here

Hi! I love your blog and the way you’ve organized it so far. “Welcome to the hood,” hahaha…even though I’m in college, your content seems like it would be relevant for someone like me to read. Some feedback: where are your actual blog posts? All I see is your About page on the homepage. I would suggest switching your homepage from static to just displaying your most recent posts. People will naturally gravitate towards your “About” page anyways. And regarding your about page, you could do with more structured, longer sentences with the intention of establishing a presence/identity on the blog. Tell me about your family, your goals for the blog, etc. etc. Also, I don’t really like the caps lock. Hope this helps! If you need any more feedback, I have a whole section on my blog devoted to helping new bloggers find ideas and stay motivated. It’s on my website, until “And Much More”, under “Meta Writing”. Cheers!

I have been bouncing back and forth in my head whether or not to change my front page. I had it set to recent posts, than changed it. I wasn’t to thrilled about it either. And, I’m not very good at writing “biography” style, so that is definitely something I will work on and fix for my Blog. I’m still working out kinks in the menu styles and navigation. Thank you for pointing out that you can’t find my posts. I will fix that too, for future viewers!
Thank You SO much again for your help and honesty! 🙂

The links on the header image are not working though. They kept coming back to your about page and so I had to click the menu bar.
I love the idea of Hoodlums! I think it is a great nickname for your followers. I’ve been blogging for over a year, but I sadly don’t have any, real or potential, nicknames for my followers…

Thank You for your feedback. I appreciate every ounce of it. I am currently working out all the kinks to menus and navigation. Its a lot of work getting this to where you want it, eh? But its so much fun!
Thank You again, and I hope to see you back! 🙂

I liked it, it’s a work in progress, which is evident when I click in places but nothing comes up but that’s good, you’re laying the foundations and that’s a great way to start! I liked what you wrote. Each part I explored that had content was written well and your overal appearance is great! I liked the colours and images used, nicely done 🙂
In my personal opinion, I thought your sidebar was too long. I liked the links along the bottom and how accessible everything was 🙂
I’m a mum blogger too, although our blogs are quite different! I personally refer to my audience as kaboodlers, I think hoodlums is catchy! Keep up the good work

Thank You so much for your input. It is a work in progress, and when I think I’m getting somewhere, I end up disliking it. But I love the process of elimination. I am having so much fun already!
I will definitely work on my menu bars, navigation and such. I truly want my site to be easy to get around and pleasant to read/view.
Thank You again for your feedback. Its awesome to know so many great people out there are willing to help, lil ol me! 🙂

Hi Megan,
I really like your header because it’s very unique. However, it’s difficult to read the writing because the red really blends into the black. Maybe change the colours?
Also, I suggest including an about page. It makes it easier for readers to connect to you!
Hope you like blogging so far!

Thank You for your input. I do agree with you that the logo, bleeds into the background. I will tweak that up a bit.
I have a hard time writing “about me” pages. I get a serious case of writers mumble. And the whole thing turns into a run-on sentence. So, yes, an about me page is in the works. If I could just get it down on the way I want my readers to see it. 🙂
Thank You so much for your suggestions. I appreciate it greatly! Cheers!

About pages are special in that you can write whatever you want, and no one has the right to disagree. You can write about some of your interests, what your blog is about, etc etc. Just remember to make it short and sweet–not one, long paragraph. You can always look at other blogs to see what their About pages are like.

Thanks! I will try my best to get the page out by tonight! You rock for the feedback!

I think one of my newest posts might be of interest to readers in community pool. https://livinglearningandlettinggo.wordpress.com/2015/07/25/perfection-is-not-the-goal/
Also I’m wondering where some you get free photos and clip art for your posts. I use wikimedia regularly and getty occasionally but they often don’t have what I need. Most of the others that say free when you do a google search, ask you to join for a fee or when you go to their sites and you pick a photo they tell you what it will cost to buy it. I find the photo search so frustrating.
You might also be interested in knowing that you can use The Sunday Wrap (http://theseekersdungeon.com/category/the-sunday-wrap/) to share the favorite post you’ve written that week on your blog and the favorite post you’ve read on another blogger’s blog. That has been a good way for me to share my posts.

I have found that you have to get certain keywords right in order to get the picture you want from online. I try my hardest to use my own and refrain from using outside sources, but sometimes you have to. Good Luck! I’ll check out wikimedia as well!

I’m looking for a way to make my homepage look better. I’m not totally satisfied with how it looks. It seems like it’s a little cluttered and unprofessional.
I also need help growing this blog outside of my group of friends. My traffic only stems from Facebook and Twitter, but even then it’s only my core group of friends. Any advice would be super helpful. Thank you!

I think it looks okay, maybe it’s the colours throwing you? They’re quite bright and can sometimes be off putting, personally I’m good with colour but it’s not everybody’s cup of tea. It takes a long time to get a steady audience, almost all bloggers with tell you that, try not to worry to much about traffic right now. I wonder if it would be better to have more than one post on your front page? I know you’ve got access to other posts but I think a lot of people respond better to scrolling through them rather than clicking… I know I do.
Maybe keep an eye out for blogging 101 courses, they’re available to all bloggers and might be handy for you if you’re new to this 🙂
In general though, I think you’re doing fine, everything will come as time goes by, just have patience. Also, one last thing. It helps to comment and like other blogs. Maybe scroll through the posts that have tagged the same tag as you, it’s a great place to find likeminded bloggers and a great way to combine getting traffic to your blog as well as finding other bloggers who’re talking about the same stuff as you, to fill up your reader with

hey cody, I agree with @fayeelizabeth’s comment. Maybe you can try to explore the other themes or if you still want the same theme, you can try to change the colors a bit?

When you were in the customiser, did you press save?
Sorry, probably sounds like I’m accusing you of being an idiot, I’m not, but I’ve done it before and. It pressed save thinking I had made the changes and it all reverted back to original.
I’ll keep checking to see if it does change though 🙂

Great idea for a blog! Maybe you could start sharing on some Clemson facebook pages for your graduating class. On the homepage comment – I think the layout looks good, I would consider updating the background color to something else bright than the purple as it can take away from the content and other images. Good luck!

Interacting with other bloggers is key. Don’t just read their posts; like and comment on them. It’s a great way to gain views from not only the blogger you wrote to, but also others. People are always looking out for more blogs to follow, so they will most likely click on your blog.

I’m still pretty new to this blogging thing as well, so I can’t give a true expert opinion, but from a readers stand point. Very well done!

It may be because you’re allowing people to scroll through your homepage instead of having to click through every post. If you want to combat this, perhaps you should switch to a static homepage, and let people navigate different categories of quotes. Your post structure is also very complicated, when I don’t think it needs to be, considering that your main content is just short quotes. You don’t need the “publish this” and display of likes and comments showing on the home page because it becomes very cluttering. Hope this helped. If you want more help/advice, I have a whole section on my blog devoted to helping bloggers stay motivated and find ideas, under “And Much More”, under “Meta Writing”. Feel free to check it out! Hope this helps. 🙂

You you’re saying that I need to simplify the posts further, to only show the quotes, and nothing else?
LikeLike
Not necessarily, but definitely simplify your homepage and consider more ways for readers to click on individual posts. The way your website is right now, I could read through all of your quotes without clicking anything, and it only registers as a single page view in your Stats page.

Loved your article, especially touching on the loss of attention span due to the way we now digest media. We need to keep written text around (and hardcover books!) as a reminder of the importance of education and true absorption of information. I liked the format of your post as well, kept my attention throughout.

Totally, text might be the only savior we have in the future! I’m glad you liked what you read! Thanks for reading and following!

Couldn’t agree with your views more. Technology is deeply affecting the foundations of our ways of connecting and bonding with each other. People these days try to feel more through emoticons instead of real time expressions. People expect others to be a texter good enough to be able to please the receiver, instead of just meeting up and trying to understand the underlying currents of human emotions.
LikeLiked by 2 people
Yes! People are forgetting real expressions and learning the language of emoticons, it’s a saddening thing.

I liked your article quite a bit. I noticed your use of headings and thought they helped break up the text and guide the reader.
My favorite part was your idea on text dying out. I am weary of this happening when I see people using more emojis than words in a text message, fb comment, etc.
Initially text speak created a new lexicon and form of grammar, but now it seems that it is replacing words with pictures.

I’m glad you liked it, yes, I had an idea for breaking up the text using them.
Exactly, text created a new form of grammar, which seems to be threatening text itself.
Thanks for reading!
