Community Pool

The place for advice, feedback, and friendly blogging conversation.

Have you just published a new post and are dying for some feedback? Did you recently start your blog and could use some layout or design advice from your more seasoned peers?

Tap into the wisdom of The Daily Post blogging community and leave your question here in the comments. Others can then click through and offer input either on your site, or in the comments here (feel free to indicate which you’d prefer).

To help us make the Community Pool a productive space for discussion, here are some tips you might find useful:

TIP: To keep from losing your place in the comment thread while you visit others’ blogs, right-click on a link to open it in a new tab or window.

  • While you’re not required to, we encourage everyone who requests feedback to also reply to at least one or two other bloggers who need some help. Spread the love!
  • The Community Pool comments section can get quite big — and starting duplicate threads doesn’t help. Thanks for not posting the same question more than once! We tend to delete duplicate comments asking for feedback on the same post.
  • If you’re looking for quality feedback, be as specific as you can. Questions about a particular post tend to draw more comments than ones about entire blogs. Questions about specific design elements are more likely to be answered than ones asking for general layout advice.
  • We discourage leaving links without a more substantive message or question. These are often overlooked by other bloggers, and we frequently remove them to make the comment reading experience smoother.
  • Please keep all comments civil and constructive. The idea is to have fun — it’s a pool, after all!
  • When leaving comments, please remember not to add your blog’s url as your signature. It’s kinda spammy: after all, your handle links directly to your blog.
  • If you haven’t looked at our Commenting Guidelines in a while, now might be a good time.
  • No running on the deck.

  2. I have recently decided that I would like to include in my blog memories/journal entry posts. The intent is to have it stored so that I can look back at it in future years, as you would a journal. I only hope t is written in a way that is exciting to read for others as well. Here is an attempt of that recalling how we made the decision to move overseas –

  3. Hi,
I’m Janice. I offer bloggers advice on blogging, productivity, and technology. I blog at Reflections where I am hoping to grow my readership. I recently revamped my About Me page. Last week, someone was kind enough to critique it for me, but when she mentioned the colors, I got confused. Could you look at it for me? Thanks, it’s okay to write directly on the blog. Here’s the link http://wp.me/P5jxvv-1 Thank you.

  4. Good evening everyone. I wrote a new essay on cultural busyness. I would appreciate some feedback concerning style and quality. Would you read something like this (with a new topic) again? Thanks for any ideas you can throw at me.

  5. Hello Everyone,

I recently moved my blog from blogger to wordpress, and have selected a simple design for now. I want to make it a travel blog with photographs. Please take a look and let me know how can I improvise it.

Also I’d love to get your thoughts on the content as well.

    Thanks a ton.

      1. Thank you, thank you! I greatly appreciate the feedback! As for the title, it’s a description that Victor Hugo used to describe Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. I’m glad you like it 😀

  9. Hi Pool.

I would love a bit of feedback on my theme. I am 8 posts into a new blog — and Im pretty sure I want to jeuzz it up… it feels dark. I was feeling a bit dark when I set it up truthfully.

But thankfully, my spirits are lifted this week, and so should the face of my blog I should think. Something to make it easier to read my wordy posts.Any and all feedback on this would be appreciated. I am happy to return the favour. : )
    Thank you!

      1. Thank you, Carolynne! I’m still new at this too. Um feedback on content and style but you nailed it! I have found that people respond to my heartfelt posts but sometimes I’m afraid that it gets too emotional haha

  10. Hi all. I am just looking for some general feedback on my blog, and, more importantly for me I suppose, is that I am looking for blogs to read from bloggers that look at things in a similar way to me, I have been finding that quite difficult to find here on WP.

Any feedback on my stuff though is appreciated, be it good or bad.

  11. Hi there, I fight with myself in what language I should blog. I started my first weblog about 15 years ago in Dutch, later I blogged in Swedish and English and started (back on wordpress.com) now in German, but I’m not so sure about it. What would you do, if you would’ve the oppertunity to write in 4 different languages – what language would you choose?

    Thanks for your feedback. 🙂

    1. It really depends which language you feel most comfortable writing in, and what your objectives are. If it’s writing for writing’s sake, or personal stuff, then your native language will always be best, though if your goal is exposure of any kind, then English is probably your best bet, as it obviously has the widest reach.

    2. As a linguist – I am currently learning my more or less 10th language, Thai – I can really relate to your dilemma. English isn’t my first language but it is the one I’m most comfortable writing in so my own confusion isn’t as great as yours :). Here’s a question: what is your blog about? Sharing art, opinions, general commentary,…? Depending on the topic, is there a language you ‘run’ to for certain things? Also, do you care how many people get to read your stuff? One thing I don’t recommend is mixing them all together – in some cases posting in 2 languages works, provided the layout and menus are clear and easy to navigate.

  12. Hey everyone! I’ve just started a new blog where I’m basically going to talk about my life leading up to and during med school. I’ll probably talk about other things as well such as places, books, films… hopefully whatever I post will be interesting! I’d love some feedback 🙂

    1. Hi, looks great so far and I think documenting your university application process will be helpful to a lot of people, including us academics who need to understand better the student voice. I have just started an academic lifestyle blog http://www.weekademia.com if you are interested in reading about university life from the lecturers point of view – my research on the mechanisms of neurological disorders and RNA-based gene therapy will be creeping in too which you might find interesting as a future medic.

      1. Wow that sounds really interesting! I’ll definitely check it out!
I live in Spain so I know the application process is very different (I’ll probably do a blog post explaining it all), but I hope it can still be useful to other students.
Thanks so much for your feedback 🙂

  14. Hello! I’ve had my wordpress blog for just about a year and this is the first time I have a technical question and am not sure where to ask it.
Yesterday for the first time my new entry was not included in my reader (and a follower confirmed that I was missing in her reader as well). I wonder if I did something to cause this or the settings have changed universally (since I’ve also noticed changes in starting a new entry). I’m not very technical but I’d hate to see my followers miss me so I would be very happy to hear about what could have happened. Thank you in advance!

    1. Sounds highly unusual! The best thing to do in this situation is give us a shout in Support. One of our Happiness Engineers can help you troubleshoot the problem.

      1. Thank you, Krista! Happiness Engineers, for real? 🙂 That’s the best title one can have. Will publish a new post today and if this one doesn’t appear in the Reader either, I will contact them.

      2. I see that E-mail support will reopen on Monday, April 20th. Until then I’m trying to locate the “Howdy, how can I help” message. 🙂
The thing is that it happened again: I posted a new entry and it doesn’t appear in the reader, it does however appear in my FB and as an email for my email followers. Earlier I tried posting a test entry and it did display in the reader so I thought it would be fine, alas no. I think the difference is if I start a new entry from the dashboard (in this case all is fine) or from the blog (not included in the reader).

      3. Happiness Engineers are definitely for real! When you log into your dashboard, you should see a little blue box on the bottom, right hand side of your dashboard — that’s livechat support. Give that a go — the Happiness Engineers are super nice. If you’re not seeing live chat, let me know — I’ll reach out to Support and point them in your direction.

  15. I would just like feedback on my new post. I am not in this for grammar corrections or anything like that. The last time I posted on a thread like this, my most recent post was one of my more lazy ones. The last one I did was much better. Check it out and comment away! (I respond to all comments. 🙂 )
