Community Pool

The place for advice, feedback, and friendly blogging conversation.

Have you just published a new post and are dying for some feedback? Did you recently start your blog and could use some layout or design advice from your more seasoned peers?

Tap into the wisdom of The Daily Post blogging community and leave your question here in the comments. Others can then click through and offer input either on your site, or in the comments here (feel free to indicate which you’d prefer).

To help us make the Community Pool a productive space for discussion, here are some tips you might find useful:

TIP: To keep from losing your place in the comment thread while you visit others’ blogs, right-click on a link to open it in a new tab or window.

  • While you’re not required to, we encourage everyone who requests feedback to also reply to at least one or two other bloggers who need some help. Spread the love!
  • The Community Pool comments section can get quite big — and starting duplicate threads doesn’t help. Thanks for not posting the same question more than once!
  • If you’re looking for quality feedback, be as specific as you can. Questions about a particular post tend to draw more comments than ones about entire blogs. Questions about specific design elements are more likely to be answered than ones asking for general layout advice.
  • We discourage leaving links without a more substantive message or question. These are often overlooked by other bloggers, and we frequently remove them to make the comment reading experience smoother.
  • Please keep all comments civil and constructive. The idea is to have fun — it’s a pool, after all!
  • If you haven’t looked at our Commenting Guidelines in a while, now might be a good time.
  • No running on the deck.

  1. Pura Vida!

I’m a new-by attempting to navigate the world of Travel Blogging. If you’d like, take a look at my blog (PuraVidaBackpacking.wordpress.com) and let me know what you think. I’m simply trying to build an online community for support in whatever ways need be. If you want me to take a look at your blog, please do let me know. Since I’m new to this whole sphere, I’m not exactly sure what questions to ask or what I should be fixing/editing, etc. Any suggestions appreciated! Pura Vida, my Friends!

  2. Fellow bloggers, I need your kind assistance. Hopefully this is the right place to ask this question.

Hopefully you will know what I am talking about here, but have you ever read a post from someone that has hit an emotion with you. It maybe something simple like describing a walk on a beach in windy weather and it was described so well, with all the details that you could almost place yourself there and feel the wind in your hair.

Well I really like reading those kinds of posts, they are the ones I try to write myself but Ill admit I find it hard to discover similar blogs on wordpress. Ive used tags like memories, feelings, emotive etc and still there is a lot of chaff in there and I’ve yet to find a lot of wheat.

So my question is (assuming you look for those kinds of posts too) what (non mainstream) tags do you guys use to find good content on wordpress? and yes I’ve tried the https://wordpress.com/tags/ area.

    Thanks in advance

  3. Hey everyone!
I’m really new to the community with only two posts and I really wanted to ask you something. The views and likes for my first post was reasonably okay for a first post by an unknown entity but my second post did not attract a single view in over 24 hours. Is this normal? Or did I do something wrong? Here’s a link to my blog:

Any advice, tips, constructive criticism, etc. is greatly appreciated and feel free to link to your sites and I will be happy to return the favor.

  6. Hello,

I am quite new to blogging and am trying it out as a way of practicing writing again and also to try and connect more with other writers and to discover new writing.

I am just wondering if people can think of any reason why it might be a problem for me to provide links to other websites where relevant? For example, if discussing an artist’s work I have seen, would there be a problem with linking the reader to the artist’s website? Would I need the artist’s permission?

This blog is a bit of a personal experiment for me but I just want to make sure I have the right etiquette down!

    Thanks 🙂

While it might not be “necessary” to contact someone before linking to their site, it would be polite to do so.. Some people like the extra attention, some find it offensive – as if you’re trying to take credit for their work. To avoid problems, ask first.

  7. Hi guys, I’m really hoping to grow my site into something quite ambitious and get lots of people involved and contributing, but I’m pretty new to this and completely new to self-hosting so have already had to correct a lot of things! Any feedback about the blog would be so greatly appreciated.

  8. I created a WordPress blog to share my words (I am writer) with friends who are not writers or not interested in blogging. It would be really great if there would be a way to allow them to read my blog that did not require them to create a blog. I am aware that creating a blog is not required, but the instructions are very cumbersome. I fear I will be the only person reading my private blog. Any suggestions?

    1. When you say it’s a “private blog” do you mean you need to log in to see it? Have you in some way shut down access?

I don’t recall any options to close access when I set up my blog, so perhaps what you want is to let your friends “Follow” your blog. This is a widget you can add to your blog that let’s people sign up – then when you post something new, they get an e-mail. They can then follow the link in the e-mail to see what you’ve written.

  9. My blog has been “out” for a few months. I have one follower who re-blogs my posts without comment on her site. Then I get a notice saying she’s “commented” on my post by re-blogging my post.

How am I supposed to respond to her “comments” that aren’t comments?

I have a technical question. I hope this is a good place for it…seems the 101 Commons page has closed to comments (or maybe I’m just not caffeinated enough!. Anyway, I often have my blog auto post to FB, Twitter, etc. When it posts to FB, the post usually includes a very lengthy excerpt from the blog – the first paragraph in some cases. I’ve tried using the “custom excerpt” feature but it doesn’t seem to make a difference. How do I shorten the amount of blog text that gets included in the FB link?

  12. I have been blogging for three months now and I have yet to break the fifty views a day barrier. Some of you have been doing this for years and might tell me to relax. But, I would appreciate any insightful comments on the structure of the site in regards to generating more followers. http://hermansneutics.com is the site. I don’t leech, so I will be spending some time here to see what other people are doing, as this practice has proven massively helpful already. Thanks, folks.
