Community Pool

The place for advice, feedback, and friendly blogging chatter.

Have you just published a new post and are dying for some feedback? Did you recently start your blog and could use some layout or design advice from your more seasoned peers?

Tap into the wisdom of The Daily Post blogging community and leave your question here in the comments. Others can then click through and offer input either on your site, or in the comments here (feel free to indicate which you’d prefer).

To help us make the Community Pool a productive space for discussion, here are some tips you might find useful:

TIP: To keep from losing your place in the comment thread while you visit others’ blogs, right-click on a link to open it in a new tab or window.

  • While you’re not required to, we encourage everyone who requests feedback to also reply to at least one or two other bloggers who need some help. Spread the love!
  • The Community Pool comments section can get quite big — and starting duplicate threads doesn’t help. Thanks for not posting the same question more than once!
  • If you’re looking for quality feedback, be as specific as you can. Questions about a particular post tend to draw more comments than ones about entire blogs. Questions about specific design elements are more likely to be answered than ones asking for general layout advice.
  • We discourage leaving links without a more substantive message or question. These are often overlooked by other bloggers, and we frequently remove them to make the comment reading experience smoother.
  • Please keep all comments civil and constructive. The idea is to have fun — it’s a pool, after all!
  • If you haven’t looked at our Commenting Guidelines in a while, now might be a good time.
  • No running on the deck.

    1. I think the honesty and looming consequences bring an interesting angle to what at first glance would be a rather pedestrian experience. Thanks for having the courage to share

  1. Hello fellow bloggers!

I just posted yesterday a new post about my journey with mental health. I’ve gotten a lot of great feedback from friends on facebook and such but was wondering if anyone had any critiques? I think I ramble a lot and I’m not sure if that’s good or bad.. Thanks in advance 🙂

    1. Thanks for your openness and for sharing. My family has some similar struggles, and it’s good to hear that we’re not the only ones. If you’re concerned about rambling, I’d suggest setting rules for yourself. My personal rule is that most of my posts can be no more than 500 words in length. That helps to break my posts up into smaller, more manageable, focused chunks. It also helps me to have a buildup of post drafts that I can publish anytime.

    2. Glad to see you are confronting your fears and getting help. Such honesty and awareness is good for you, and I believe sets a good example for others. Wish you the best

    1. A couple of thoughts:

      – It’s hard to read your title and tagline against that header image. However, I really like the header design. If you darkened the light blue a little, the pink letters would be easier to follow.

      – I’d change “not-so-average” to something less vague. I’ve taught college and every student is “not-so-average” in some way. Perhaps more important, though, is that your title/tagline combination gives visitors no sense of who you are except for the fact that you’re a college student. Modifying that adjective would help remedy that issue.

      1. Thanks for the advice! I’ll see what I can do about the coloring in the header. I’ve been given conflicting advice about the tagline, though; the ambiguity has worked fairly well with the lack of specificity in post topics, but I’ll keep it in mind!

  2. Good afternoon blogosphere! I am a baby blogger and have posted a few articles here and I would love some feedback. I am writing about my journey to get my daughter ready for kindergarten.

I’m hoping to connect with other moms on the same or similar paths as well as others who enjoy a great read. You can find me here at http://countdowntok.com and join the conversation on FB at http://www.facebook.com/countdowntok

I’m not sure if the links work ( hence my novice blogging skills) Thanks and happy reading.

  3. Howdy fellow bloggers! I’d appreciate some feedback about the brand/mission of my blog. I’m curious to see if the concept I have in mind comes across clearly to readers. In 1-3 sentences, what is my blog telling you that it’s about?

  4. Hi Everyone! I’d love some feedback on my latest post about why having a British accent in the US isn’t as good as you may think and on my blog in general. Sorry If this post appears more than once, apparently my initial post is awaiting moderation. Still! :/

I will be visiting other blogs and giving feedback this evening too 🙂

    1. Love it, I’m from Sussex originally and now live in Cornwall, and I have to admit the ‘south west accent’ is a bit different! It’s amazing how many people I know here that aren’t from here though! It must be a struggle if you’re not a brit, and not aware of the diversity in language and accent!
      Fun post 🙂

    2. Entertaining to anyone from England who has ever travelled in the US. I’d say don’t worry and don’t force your accent one way or the other, though I picked up ‘y’all’ alarmingly quickly.

  5. Hi again all,

As well as the latest Greek post I recently posted, I also have literally just put out a blog entry on not letting stylistic criticism get in the way of writing. I’m trying to decide which style between news commentary and the more creative stuff suits my blog more so any feedback on that would be incredibly helpful. Thanks in advance again, link to the new post below.

    1. I think you’re a talented writer and a very interesting blogger but your hesitation comes out as a variation in style throughout this particular post which is ironic given the subject. I personally prefer your informal style, as I think it shows your passion in a very accessible way.

    1. I read your short story, and I appreciate that you are sharing the Gospel message through your blog. I think that you can start off the story setting a little more background instead of jumping right into things– for example, that all of the mirrors are getting burned for a rebellion. How can you lead into the burning later? And explain more about why each mirror is lovely yet dirty at the same time. Again, I love it! I’m just an English teacher so sometimes I pick on things. I think this is a great draft!

      1. Thanks for reading my post. I try to share truth from the Bible through the things I write. My blog is mostly a place to post about what I learn at my church.

  6. I’m having a hard time making my blog more focused. Our blog is about the thoughts/concerns of various team members who will be going to Nepal with our Non-profit in June. But it also has info on Nepal and updates on the happenings of LinM. How can I mesh all of these subjects together. Or should I make a turn and try to be more precise with my posts. Please help!

    1. Your latest post asks a lot of questions and it’s very thoughtful. You’re perhaps asking too many too quickly to expect the answers from another blogger – an answer to any one question would feel inadequate.

I suggest just pushing yourself a bit further and explaining what you feel yourself about some of the questions you’ve raised. You certainly have lots of subjects you can write about – each question could be extended into a new post.

I also thought you might rework some of the ideas into a poem as it read a little like a prose poem.

It can be hard to read long paragraphs especially on a computer, so you might like to break things up.

If you tag your posts you’ll gradually attract more readers. Stick with it – it takes time.

  7. Hello,

I am brand new to this and looking for some feedback and advice. My blog is about teaching/education and my primary audience is other teachers (but all feedback is welcome). I have a few posts up and would love to get feed back on the content and the overall layout of the blog. I would be happy to read yours in return as I am looking for more examples that can give me better direction.

    Thanks in advance!

    1. We’re using the same theme – I always like to see how others use it. I like your custom colours. I suggest you consider adding a blog page to your main menu bar for your recent posts rather than having links in the middle of your home and about pages – though other people might advise differently.

    1. I did read your introductory post but I’d love to see your About page updated. It’s always the first place I go on a new blog so I can find out who the blogger is and what I might expect from future posts 🙂 Great start though!

  8. Hey everyone! I blog about my views on my life and the world around me. I try to be positive and uplifting, because I think the world needs more smiles! This is a post I wrote yesterday tying some themes from The Hunger Games into life inspiration: https://sherinaspeaks.wordpress.com/2015/02/23/the-hanging-tree-and-hope/

I would appreciate any feedback on the post, as well as my overall blog, and I’m more than happy to return the favour! Happy blogging 🙂

    1. I’d change “The World as I See It” if I were you. The tagline is a place to give readers a glimpse of what you offer that the other millions of bloggers don’t. Not everyone is going to click on an “About” link and the tagline is prime real estate.
