Get your new blog off the ground or explore photography basics in this month’s Blogging U. courses.
We’re excited to offer two Blogging U. courses this March: Blogging 101 and Photography 101. Read on to learn more about each course, see how Blogging U. works, and register!
Blogging 101: Zero to Hero — March 2 – 20
Blogging 101 is three weeks of bite-size blogging assignments that take you from “Blog?” to “Blog!” Every weekday, you’ll get a new assignment to help you publish a post, customize your blog, or engage with the community. Whether you’re just getting started or want to revive a dormant blog, we’ll help you build good blogging habits and blogger connections that will keep you going over the long haul.
You’ll walk away with a stronger focus for your blog, several published posts and a handful of drafts, a theme that reflects your personality, a small (but growing!) audience, a grasp of blogging etiquette — and a bunch of new friends.
Photography 101: A Photo a Day — March 2 – 27
Photography 101 is a photo-a-day challenge. You’ll publish new posts, make new friends, and hone your photographer’s eye.
Photography 101 is a four-week, intro-level course open to all, from new bloggers to hobbyist photographers to pro-shooters. Use the camera you like: a phone, a point-and-shoot, or a dSLR. Each weekday, we’ll give you a new photography theme and tip — we might share advice on composition, tips on working with different light sources, or image editing ideas — and the community critique will inspire you and motivate you.
How do Blogging U. courses work?
Blogging U. courses exist for one reason: to help you meet your own blogging and photography goals.
- Courses are free, flexible, and open to all.
- You’ll get a new task to complete each day, along with our best advice and favorite resources. Do them on your own time, and interpret them however makes sense for your specific blog and personal goals — we’re not grading you, we’re not checking to make sure you complete every task, and there’s no “wrong” way to use the resources we give you.
- You’ll receive each assignment via email. Each assignment will contain all the inspiration and instructions you need to complete it. Weekends are free.
- Each course will have a private community site, the Commons, for chatting, connecting, and seeking feedback and support. Daily Post staff and Happiness Engineers will be on hand to answer your questions and offer guidance and resources.
How do I register?
While you’re free to register for both, we encourage you to try one course at a time, to be sure you get the most out of the experience. All courses will be repeated throughout 2015.
To register, just fill out this short form. Registration for each course remains open until the day before the course begins. You won’t receive an automated confirmation email, but you’ll receive a welcome email with more detailed instructions before your course(s) begin.

Oh my gosh- I signed up for Photography 101- I don#t think I can take each assignment because I will graduate when the course ends but what ever- maybe I’ll learn new stuff- even when photoblogging for quite a while now…

There is no graduation from Blogging U. No one checks up on you. The aim of Blogging U is to make resources available to WordPress (and other) bloggers. If an assignment does not fit into the vision you have for your blog, or for that matter into your schedule, you are free to skip or re-imagine it, as you wish 🙂

Yay! I am taking Blogging 101 because I am so technologically challenged and am so far behind on the jargon that it is scary! I am finally going to grasp a widget, I hope! Don’t laugh! The last time I had a job that required me on a computer, it involved a black screen with bright green blinking letters and we used DOS, okay?
LikeLiked by 4 people
Welcome! If you can use DOS, you can use wordpress.com 🙂

Widget = small bit of pre-written code that let’s you do cool stuff. Basically, an automated “short-cut” that can do anything from displaying your social networks / Gravatar, to linking to other blogs you like.

Thanks Adel! Now I must just learn how to use them 🙂

This souds silly, but WordPress 101 made a comment…’if you can use DOS…” What is DOS?

I was responding to one of the other commenters here; she’d referenced DOS, which is is a computer operating system that was used a lot in the 80s.

Will Photography 101 have different subjects than the one we took in November?!? Shouldn’t it be called Photography 201, then? 😉 If so, I’ll be up for registration!

It’s the same course. We’ve swapped out two or three of the themes, but it’s otherwise the same.

I loved both courses and highly recommend them to new bloggers, good to see that you guys are keeping them going 🙂 Also, please tell me that photo101 will have different prompts this time around… The original set was good but it would be nice to see some variety or maybe an optional one?

Whenever we re-run a course, it’s with the same content unless otherwise stated, so bloggers who weren’t around/weren’t able to participate the first time can give it a go.

Makes sense… It’ll be a challenge to put a different spin on these then!

I didn’t participate in the previous Photography 101, but with Blogging 101, I have sort of made it my “unofficial editorial schedule”. Because the tasks are relatively unspecific, it is easy to fit them into blogging goals (for the most part). Each round of Blogging U (I have participated in five, three of which was Blogging 101) just adds a new dimension.

Will the photo 101 have different subject matters to last time?

Nope, Blogging U. courses offer the same content unless we explicitly state that a course is new, so newer bloggers can give them a try.

Is this different from the Photo 101, that happened in November?? The prompts, the tips and tricks will be different?

No, it’s the same course. When Blogging U. courses repeat, the course material is the same unless otherwise noted.

I’ve just registered for both. I’ve been reading some of the previous Blogging 101 course assignments, so think i have a bit of a head start, so that should help me be able to do both courses at the same time!

I struggled last session, unable to get into The Commons. I’ve no doubt there was some pilot error on my end. I shall keep trying!

Easiest (and best) is to contact WP. Michelle always provides a link in the first few tasks for if you can’t get into the Commons.

Thanks! I may have made my requests too late in the process!

I’m sorry to hear that! In the first few assignments, you’ll typically find a link to this page, where you can let us know:
https://wordpress.com/dailypost/commons-access/
If you try to enter the Commons and click on the “request access” box that appears, you should also receive an email with a link to that same page.

On an unrelated note: looking at your name here, I see you have punctuation in your blog URL that make your link unclickable, so folks won’t be able to click on your name to find your blog — make sure your URL doesn’t have “&” or “@” it it, and you’ll be all set.

Has TDP ever thought about doing a regular series of weekly prompts, just like you do with the daily prompts? I’ve been searching everywhere for good weekly prompts, but haven’t found any… 😦
