The place for advice, feedback, and friendly blogging chatter.
Have you just published a new post and are dying for some feedback? Did you recently start your blog and could use some layout or design advice from your more seasoned peers?
Tap into the wisdom of The Daily Post blogging community and leave your question here in the comments. Others can then click through and offer input either on your site, or in the comments here (feel free to indicate which you’d prefer).
To help us make the Community Pool a productive space for discussion, here are some tips you might find useful:
TIP: To keep from losing your place in the comment thread while you visit others’ blogs, right-click on a link to open it in a new tab or window.
- While you’re not required to, we encourage everyone who requests feedback to also reply to at least one or two other bloggers who need some help. Spread the love!
- The Community Pool comments section can get quite big — and starting duplicate threads doesn’t help. Thanks for not posting the same question more than once!
- If you’re looking for quality feedback, be as specific as you can. Questions about a particular post tend to draw more comments than ones about entire blogs. Questions about specific design elements are more likely to be answered than ones asking for general layout advice.
- We discourage leaving links without a more substantive message or question. These are often overlooked by other bloggers, and we frequently remove them to make the comment reading experience smoother.
- Please keep all comments civil and constructive. The idea is to have fun — it’s a pool, after all!
- If you haven’t looked at our Commenting Guidelines in a while, now might be a good time.
- No running on the deck.

I think it depends on theme you picked. Unless you pay for a theme its not one you generally have the option of altering much; with exception of setting a background photo/colour. Choose one meant for simple writing/blogging and there should be no problem.

Hi there,
Love your blog!! I have a quick question. I just created a blog and have a “home” tab like yourself. The trouble is I can’t seem to figure out how the “home” tab will actually take the reader back to the home page. I would really appreciate some help! Thank you!

Hey there!
I think as long as readers click into the “Home” or “house image” icon, it will lead them back to your home page, which is the page that usually hosts your latest posts (or whichever posts you made sticky)

Thanks for roaming around my little blog. What a cool comment to receive – I think you’re the first (therefore, the most unique!) to say such thing about my writing. You’re right, I do tend to write about the nitty gritty of seemingly unimportant events, don’t I? Very glad you found something appealing.
As to your writing, I like your sense of humour – the Lebanese Traffic post made me chuckle. As did your tweet about the apparent correlation between UofT male suicides and prostate cancer…

Here’s a travel entry: https://persephone2015.wordpress.com/2015/01/11/lovely-lovely-luang-prabang/ and here’s a personal one: https://persephone2015.wordpress.com/2015/01/21/quandary/

Hi persephone, I loved your description of Luang Prabang and think there’s some very good travel material there! If I ever make it to Laos I’d probably try some of your recommendations.
Perhaps consider splitting your piece into different paragraphs? From my screen it reads as one paragraph and it might be a bit hard for the reader to get to the end, which would be a pity because the writing is quite informative. I like the details. Generally for travel blogs (which is what your blog seems to aim for, alongside the bit about living in China) photos would grately enhance the reader experience! So add away with photos from your trip 🙂
Thanks for browsing my little blog, keep writing! And thank you for the follow!

Hi Pixie,
Great feedback, thank you! Glad you liked it! I thought I had split it into paragraphs, but for some reason it didn’t appear that weay when I published it – although I hadn’t realised until you said. I’ve now added a few photos (still a few to go though as I’m still sorting them out; I always take too many!) – would you mind having a look & letting me know if they’re ok/too many/not enough?
Thanks!
Persephone

Looks great! Yeah that happens sometimes – my paragraphs are clumped up if I edit a post in the new editor. This doesn’t happen if I stick to the classic editing interface, so if I have to edit something once it’s published I do it in the classic mode.
Photos look good! You might have to decrease your file sizes though – currently it takes a while to load a photos if readers click on it, which 1) scares readers away because the image loads slowly and 2) I think lowers your ranking on the www overall! You can also opt to not let the image load and choose the file size before sticking it into your post. Though I’m definitely not the image expert … you can see from my relatively crappy photos sometimes 😉
Anyone else have image tips please share!

I’d perhaps get rid of the “ii-by lewis wollington” bit.
My two cents, hope you don’t mind!

While I concur with pixie’s recommendation of going for shorter, to-the-point slugs in your posts’ permalinks, be very careful when you retroactively modify them after publishing your post, since all links that have already been shared will no longer work (for example, if you already shared your post on Facebook or Twitter, people who click on it won’t reach the post if you changed the slug in the meantime).

That’s a great reminder, thanks Ben. But within wordpress I understand the slugs to be automatically corrected (say, in a self-ping back or on another wordpress blog)? Or is this not true? Thanks!

I really like the idea behind this piece and some of the imagery is really good, but the flow isn’t quite there for me. It may be that this needs to be a spoken word piece and on paper it doesn’t carry the same rhythm, but the mix of longer lines and shorter ones seemed more random than sculpted. I still liked the overall tone though. It’s certainly an interesting piece.

Balance,
You might consider researching pentameter and reading more poetry to aid you in honing your craft. I struggle at times with flow and rhythym in my poetry, which is why I don’t ever share much of it. I have to remind myself that I must spend as much, or more, time reading and researching as I do writing if I really want to call myself a writer.
Surgeons do not spend every minute of their work performing surgery. Much of their time is spent in study, research, and continuing their education. Many only actually perform surgery a day or two each week. An ounce of study is worth a pound of finished work.

The difference with the flow is that it might flow in my head and not the readers and that is a risk you have to take and not everyone is going to like what I write and I have decided not to hold back my writing I just put it out there so I can get feedback and wonderful constructive criticism like yours! Hello everyone,
I am in need of some advice for my blog. I have quite a bit to post right now, but after thinking about the name of my blog (it’s really generic) I thought I should really change it.
The problem is I’m not sure what name would really give it the diversity that I would want to write about.
Basically, what I’ll be doing with my blog is writing about a little of everything such as things that I learn as I go through life, opinions on certain controversial events, creative stories, informative articles, etc.
I thought about creating two different blogs to try to separate my topics and themes, but I attempted that and realized how hard it would be as of right now to run two blogs efficiently without making myself go crazy.
If you could offer any advice I would more than appreciate it.
Thank you!

I think you have a good start on blogging. I love your positivity! In terms of your questions about naming your blog… I guess you kind of have to decide how you want to “brand” yourself – currently you are branded by your name, but what blog title would sum up your posts or what you hope to write about? I look forward to reading more! 🙂

Thank you for the input! I will be brainstorming for my “brand”.

I’m quite similar in terms of posting a little bit of everything on my blog. What I do is have a different category for topics that are vastly different. So you could have one Category for Creative Writing, another for Articles. That way you don’t have to create a new blog, but everything is still easy to organise and find (and if something falls into more than one category, you don’t have to post it on more than one blog).
I’m not sure if that helps you much …?

That actually does help a lot
I still have to find a name for my blog, and I was thinking something along the lines “Thoughts from the Mind”. Probably not THAT generic, but something along those lines.
I will definitely keep that your advice in mind!
Thank you so much for the help!

Something like Scrambled Rambles? I’m not great with coming up with clever and witty, or thought provoking names. I honestly have no idea how I even got mine. It just happened.
Glad I could help though, and good luck finding your name.

You general blog set-up is very typical of a start-up blog. It is very generic but thats not a bad thing. You should pick a theme that suits you – from the blog name to the blog colour scheme. Given that your interest lie towards the musical end of the spectrum that would be a very good place to start choosing. My advice is not to force it – blog designs evolve as we blog.

I’m sorry if this is a bit of a teaser, but we’re actually about to publish a post on this very topic — choosing your blog name — next Tuesday on The Daily Post. Stay tuned!
In the meantime, in case it might help you, here’s a post we ran a while back in which two bloggers ran us through the process of choosing their blogs’ names:

Personally, I think it’s a good thing to take some time to find a ”better” and clearer title for your blog. As you move along with blogging, you’ll notice what you really do like writing about, and this will help you choose a clearer focus. It’s also possible that you’ll write about pretty much anything. Having your blog named after yourself would work just fine then, and perhaps you can choose a subtitle to add some precision.
When I created my latest blog, I knew I wanted a place to write about things I couldn’t address on my other blogs. So I chose to call it ”That Sort of Thing. Everything that doensn’t fit anywhere else”. I really like the title and layout of that blog, yet in the end I don’t write there too often. Sometimes only time can really help you know how much you trully enjoy blogging about!

Hi,
Some tips on the method to do a book review might be needed?https://thehighheeledpapergirl.wordpress.com/2015/01/26/born-on-the-fourth-of-july-by-ron-kovic/
Thanks. x

I suppose there’s two types: the review for someone who is thinking of reading the book in the future, and the review for someone who wants someone else opinions on the book’s contents. I’d say it’s important to distinguish between the two.
LikeLiked by 1 person
It really depends on your aim for the review. The fashion in which you’ve written is suitable for a school assignment but is very flat textually if you are trying to promote the book. When trying to promote you draw more upon the enjoyable aspects of the book and provide examples. The one you have up is a more comprehensive version that provides the reader with a historical backdrop while analysing the structure.

Overall, the blog design is okay, if a little generic in general. However, the banner slogan feels a little let down by plain black and white. 🙂 It’s a nice slogan. If deserves something nice behind it.

You’re using the same theme I am on one of my blog and yet it looks completly different. It’s always interesting to me to see how people make drastically different blogs out of the same building blocks!
Personally, I find the background a little distracting. The font on the Suits theme is small, and I like to have a unified background to read it more easily. That’s just my taste, of course, and it should be noted that I wear really thick glasses. Maybe no one else has trouble reading!
The instagram widget adds some color. Don’t worry about the blog being a little bare for now, you’ve only just started! Take some time to focus on finding your own voice and focus!

I didn’t know where to comment on your blog so I thought I would re-send the link to my blog on here and explain how you can comment. The link I originally sent shows my front page with my latest blog posts. If you had clicked on the title of the blog post you wanted to view then you would have been taken to a separate page just for that blog post and you would be able to comment at the bottom. Since it’s just as easy to send you the link directly to my post about success I thought I would do that instead.

Edin, Cubic, Espied, Sketch, Creative, designer or similar are good options. It really depends what look and feel you are going for. Although the boardwalk one you have in use is not a bad choice either.

Hi Penshift!
Thanks for your suggestions. I really liked Cubic a lot. Planning to also try out the others. It really helped.
To narrow my choices a bit, I’m really looking for a theme that would go well with Black n White/Pencil Drawings as that is what I’m currently uploading.
I selected broadwalk just for a try, but there are 2 points which I’m feeling a little uneasy about:
1. Navigating to the page, the images are shown twice, first one as featured image and second one as the real upload.
2. The feature image just blows up/stretches the image to the width of the screen, which is a little annoying for vertical/non-landscape images.
LikeLiked by 2 people
You’ve highlight both reasons why broadwalk and I don’t mesh. See how far the theme template will let you alter the theme colours and experiment. Sketches won’t necessarily show well on any of them. The safest background colour is white though.

Your blog is rather colorful! What theme are you using?

Hi! Here’s some feedback!
I like the layout, it’s clean for the most part. I would recommend shortening the subtitle of the blog and adding the text in the sidebar instead.
It would be great to see a few more images and more color. Using images in the sidebar is a good option: you could add a photo of you with a link to your gravatar, a quote you like, a few photos you took, etc.
In the about section, I would really like to learn more about who you are and what you blog about. Having checked a few of your posts, it seems that you focus on a few specific topics: let readers know what you have in store for them. If they can’t find information easily, people often move on to the next blog. You can keep what’s there and simply add a description of your blog if you want.
I hope this is useful to you!

If you are looking to adding so images or photos to your blog to make it look more alive, I recommend connecting to your instagram or Flickr account, if you have one, and displaying some photos in the sidebar. You can create images or a logo for your blog using canva.com or PicMonkey. You can also add a widget on the sidebar to display the avatars of the people who follow your blog. It’s a nice way to thank them for being part of your community and add color!
