The place for advice, feedback, and friendly blogging chatter.
Have you just published a new post and are dying for some feedback? Did you recently start your blog and could use some layout or design advice from your more seasoned peers?
Tap into the wisdom of The Daily Post blogging community and leave your question here in the comments. Others can then click through and offer input either on your site, or in the comments here (feel free to indicate which you’d prefer).
To help us make the Community Pool a productive space for discussion, here are some tips you might find useful:
TIP: To keep from losing your place in the comment thread while you visit others’ blogs, right-click on a link to open it in a new tab or window.
- While you’re not required to, we encourage everyone who requests feedback to also reply to at least one or two other bloggers who need some help. Spread the love!
- The Community Pool comments section can get quite big — and starting duplicate threads doesn’t help. Thanks for not posting the same question more than once!
- If you’re looking for quality feedback, be as specific as you can. Questions about a particular post tend to draw more comments than ones about entire blogs. Questions about specific design elements are more likely to be answered than ones asking for general layout advice.
- We discourage leaving links without a more substantive message or question. These are often overlooked by other bloggers, and we frequently remove them to make the comment reading experience smoother.
- Please keep all comments civil and constructive. The idea is to have fun — it’s a pool, after all!
- If you haven’t looked at our Commenting Guidelines in a while, now might be a good time.
- No running on the deck.

Hi Cavan! Long story short, I’m beginning to read, so I’m now following you 😉 Anyway, about the blog; it’s nice and simple, and has a good layout. I think it will serve reviews of books nicely, but as mentioned; an image or maybe two in good quality would do great. Especially concerning the banner of the first review isn’t fitting very well. If you can’t find a better fit, it’s fairly easy to make one of your own (even in MS Paint). 🙂

I think the sidebar works well on Cavan Reads. 🙂 I would suggest adding the widget that lists your top posts and pages, as a way of showing readers what’s most popular on your blog.
In regards to A Day In The Life, I couldn’t find any posts, but I did see the sidebar and it looked good. I’d add the widget that allows people who aren’t on WordPress to follow you via email. You added that widget on Cavan Reads, and it’s just a way to allow for more followers. 🙂
I love books (although I’m not a fan of horror), so I’m following. 🙂

I enjoyed your post about terrorism in Pakistan. I conducted a research paper on terrorism, and I learned that no matter how many terrorist attacks the West has, the Middle East and Asia (and Africa) endure so much more. While this wasn’t a shock, it was a slap in the face that we fear terrorism here in the West, but for those in the East, it’s a rather common event, unfortunately. I like the points you made on eradicating terrorism, especially by installing democracy.

Also, I would suggest exploring some widgets – when used properly, they can really add to a blog. For example, there’s a widget that lists your top posts and pages, one that lists your most recent posts (and another for comments), and another one that allows people who aren’t on WordPress to still follow you via email. 🙂

you have lovely pictures Joe! The theme is really nice and minimal. I’d have one suggestion. Photo galleries are nice, I use them too, but some images are just so good that it would be nice for them to be stand alone. Also if I were you I’d pick a theme for each photo dump so as to be more cohesive (e.g. flowers, park and so on).

Hey, I will think about having a few one photo posts. Although the idea behind the photo dump is that the photos are random so I’m not so sure about giving them a title. Thanks 😀

Well it would be more SEO friendly to have a title other than Photo Dump. Oh and I didn’t mean to have only one photo posts, I meant that you can place some photos on your posts one under the other rather than in a gallery (which makes up the collage)

“A picture speaks a thousand words”. I am surprised no one said this in the comments yet. Your pictures tell a story and are beautiful to look at, so I subscribed. I do think however that putting them up in the way you do, all fused together in a large block, does take away a little from the impact they would have if they were individually framed. I personally would also like a bit more information about each picture, what was the thought you had when you took it, in other words what was it that inspired you to push the camera button at that moment, and where in the world it was taken. A few words or short sentence can do the trick. This can help shift the viewers focus from their personal perception to a wider one that takes them on a bit more of a journey and add a “thousand” more. Maybe post less more often?

Hi Aaron,
I like that you touch such a serious issue in your latest post – as travel bloggers, we always tend to be a bit on the lighthearted side and I know it is challenging to treat political topics in the framework of a travel blog. I think you did that very well!
For your blog in general, I think there are some choices in design that people may have differing opinions on – having the main content all on the left and “wasting” so much space for the orange bar on the right is one of them – but I know that orange fits your blog title and should be part of your design. I would probably have tried to center the main body in front of the orange background.
I am not sure if I understand the message of the header image on your blog (the one with the beach) – it looks more like from a catalog for beach holidays and I am not sure if this is really the best fit for your content.
But again, very well done on the post today!

Hey Aaron, is it just one person or a community of “orange travelers”? I wish there was a picture of the actual traveler. If you want to stay anon, you could put up a picture of you wearing something orange but not showing your face.
Your theme matches well with the title of your blog, but it would be cool to see more pictures of all the places you’ve visited. Maybe think about changing to layout to be more picture-based? Hope this helps!

I liked your post. It takes a deft hand to combine your politics with something so seemingly light-hearted as a travel blog. In reality, I think our travel experiences tell us a lot about who we are in the world as well as how we view it. Your writing has a lot of potential and there’s a lot of good stuff in there. (I read ‘Normal People’.) You might be able to up the emotional impact by editing down to make the writing more concise and direct. Hi everyone,
I would love some feedback on this post: http://mycreativecosmos.com/2015/01/19/the-pastry-chef-and-the-business-man/
I’ve used page breaks and I’m not sure if they work or distract from the story. Someone told me if I hadn’t pointed out what they were, they would have thought the rest of the story was missing.
Thank you and happy blogging.

I don’t think I would have noticed them if you hadn’t mentioned it, but knowing they were there worked for the story. Maybe at the bottom in parenthesis remind people to click to the next page.

I have to admit–the page numbers confused me.
The read more tag is not a problem. (Most blog readers know to click on it.) But after hitting the read more tag, I thought that was the end of the story. Which means I thought the Pastry Chef and The Business Man ended in a very odd place.
It took going back to your site two more times before I ever even noticed the page numbers at the bottom and went, “Ooooh–that’s what she means.” Now I can read the rest of the story.
Have you considered calling them chapters, instead–or parts?
Ex: The Pastry Chef and The Business Man (Part 1)
That would be clearer to people like me, at least 🙂

Hi Stacey,
Yes, I think I’ll need to go back and rename the ‘parts’ and use separate pages instead with links at the bottom to go to the next chapter. Thank you

I’ve just adjusted the post and removed the page breaks. The story is now split across pages. It took a bit of work bit I think this works much better.
As per home page with ‘Continue reading’: http://mycreativecosmos.com/

Hi Chaps,
This is a cool thing!
Naturally, I’m seeking some feedback on my (fairly new) blog. Comments about the layout and subject matter would be useful, as would be anythoughts on the writing – but I should warn you that my posts tend to be loooong (maybe that’s the problem). There are a couple bits of poetry too.
All comments constructive (and destructive I suppose) welcome. And naturally I’ll reciprocate.

Hey there! I like your layout, it’s not too bust and tends to direct focus straight to the point – your words. I do think you might be right when you sat your posts are very long and a potential problem. Although what you’re saying is most definitely worth reading I would maybe try and condense it down a bit in case people get bored and wander off before you get to the important crux of your post.
Good luck blogging! 🙂

I like it! Maybe consider adding some color, unless you are going for the gray scale, which sorta seems to fit your theme.
Also, in terms of your long posts, I would suggest inserting the “read more” tag when you are typing them. That way any visitors can scroll through your site more easily to see multiple posts.

Thanks Kassie. I like the layout of your site. It immediately draws me in and I want to read more. Colour is good! (although I’m deliberately doing the dreary/arty monochrome thing).
Also looks like you have interesting things to say, so I’m following you now.
Cheers

Your theme and layout work well with your content. (I visited the site before you put in the read more tags and also afterwards and those really do add.)
The posts are long. I think that’s a problem for a lot of blog readers, though I know it’s very difficult to make anything other than a superficial point in less than five hundred words. It’s certainly an art that I haven’t mastered.

You are quite a good writer and the color tone of your theme matches your topic. You might consider some kind of background image, like people sitting at a French cafe, to add more “oomph.” The post was probably too long for most readers. You could break it into sections by ending each part with a (rhetorical) question that might engage your readers.

Thanks Teachez. I was trying to get the background thing up but it didn’t look right. I know what you mean about the long posts. I have a tendency to waffle. I just love words and sentences (and paragraphs too).
I appreciate your feedback and nice comments. I’m going to check out your blog now…

Your content is intriguing. I read several posts including ‘Endless thoughts’ and ‘Forgive me for knowing you’, and they were all engaging and interesting. Your tone is dark but I really like it. ‘Endless thoughts,’ was my favorite so far.
The blog design is clear and easy to read. The black text on white surrounded by the dark, really gives the blog drama and makes the posts pop.
There is a lot of content on the post page. It makes for a long scroll and I couldn’t find a menu, either. Have you thought about adding a menu with a home page and categories? Maybe an about page?

Hi guys! I just opted for a new theme and rejigged my whole design and widgety bits so I’d really like some opinions/thoughts on how it goes together and the general feel of the site, please and thanks in advance all! 🙂

The overall theme is cool, I especially love the header image. I have two suggestions:
– I’d put a little less focus on the site widgets. The way you arranged them is good, but they take up half your site. In my opinion it would be wise to give your actual posts a little more physical space to guide the eye towards them.
– I personally find your chosen background image really nice and fitting to the theme, but it’s a tad too distracting for me. Maybe experiment with the opacity settings to tone it down a little bit?

Thanks for your feedback! I’ll definitely look at changing the things you’ve mentioned, I hadn’t thought of the background as distracting but now you’ve mentioned it I can definitely see how it can be! Tuning it down a bit will definitely help, thanks a lot 🙂

You really did an amazing job on personalizing your page! I especially like how the widgets merge with the rest to create less of a this-is-a-box-and-there-is-a-widget-inside feel, and it’s also a great idea to “sign” your posts. I agree with Philipp Ulrich that it might be a good idea to reduce the contrast of the background image a little.

I love the clean look of your blog! I think the first thing I noticed was that you don’t have social media buttons at the top for people to connect with you. I have a website designer who is good, if you’re interested. She’s helping me with a new theme right now. I also have a graphic designer who just did a new logo…

The theme is alright, but the site could use a bit more contrast in the color scheme. I’d suggest starting by making the headlines a good bit darker to make them stand out more from the rest.
Also, that cat picture is hilarious!

I’d play around with some of the customisations on WP first before getting someone to design your website — make sure you have a clear idea as to what your site needs and what you want. As a new blogger you’ll probably end up experimenting with different styles of post so you can try out different ways of presenting your blog to know what works and suits your style of content — what might look good at first isn’t necessarily going to be the best thing for helping readers navigate, or give you the flexibility to add pages and social media feeds etc.

I enjoyed your post (and the hilarious cats). Is there a reason you didn’t put all of the post on a single page? The theme looks a bit monotone for such lively writing. Can you add some background color or images? I have found that WordPress publishes numerous posts on improving your blog. Other bloggers out there also post great tips. I wouldn’t pay anyone until you have tried free resources first. Keep blogging. You are worth reading!
