Blogging 101 and Photo 101 Start November 3

Blogging 101 returns next month, and we introduce the newest Blogging U. challenge: Photography 101!

If you’ve new to blogging and missed September’s Blogging 101, never fear — a new offering starts up on Monday, November 3rd. We’re also excited to announce Blogging U.’s first photo course, Photography 101. Learn more about each and register:

Photography 101

This November, we launch a new track in Blogging U.: photography! First up: Photography 101, a photo-a-day challenge that combines a daily photo theme with photography and photo editing tips. You’ll publish new posts, make new friends, and hone your photographer’s eye.

Photography 101 is a month-long course, starting November 3 and ending November 28. This is an intro-level course open to all, from new bloggers and hobbyist photographers to veteran photo challenge participants and pro-shooters. Use the camera you like — a phone, a point-and-shoot, or a dSLR.

A note on cameras…

If you’ll be shooting mainly from your iOS or Android phone or tablet, download the WordPress app (for iOS or Android) if you haven’t already.

Although the suggested goal is to publish an image-based post every day, Film photographers are welcome to use the daily themes as shooting inspiration.

  • Each assignment gives you a new photography theme and tip — we might share advice on composition, tips on working with different light sources, or image editing ideas.
  • We’ll post a new assignment here on The Daily Post each weekday at 12AM GMT. While each tip is meant to complement the daily theme, you don’t have to use it — focus only on the day’s theme if you’d like (or apply our tips to a shot of your choice). Weekends are off, but we’ll provide suggestions for ways to take the week’s tips further.
  • Participants will have a private community site, the Commons, for chatting, connecting, and seeking feedback and support. Daily Post staff and Happiness Engineers will be on hand to answer your questions and offer guidance and resources.

Whether you eagerly await the Daily Post‘s regular weekly photo challenge each Friday, just got a new phone and want to explore what its camera can do, are a long-time shutterbug looking for some new inspiration, or all of the above, Photography 101 is for you. (It’s also a great way for photobloggers to participate in NaBloPoMo this November.)

Charge up your camera batteries and get ready to shoot!

Blogging 101

Before Blogging 101, my blog felt like a lost, small fish in a big pond. It is still a small fish but it looks much better, has new features and fresh content more regularly, and is very interactive, with regular visits from supportive new followers.

Blogging 101 is a month of bite-size blogging assignments that take you from “Blog?” to “Blog!” At the end of the month, you’ll have a blog you’re proud and excited to publish — and that others are excited to read. Here’s how it works:

  • Assignments fall into three broad categories — publishing posts, customizing your blog, and engaging with the community — and are designed to build on one another.
  • We’ll post a new assignment here on The Daily Post each weekday at 12AM GMT. Each assignment will contain all the inspiration and instructions you need to complete it. Weekends are free time (but we’ll suggest some ways you might want to spend it).
  • Participants will have a private community site, the Commons, for chatting, connecting, and seeking feedback and support. Daily Post staff and Happiness Engineers will be on hand to answer your questions and offer guidance and resources.

On Day 30, you’ll have six (or more!) published posts and a handful of drafts, a customized theme that reflects your personality, a small but growing audience, a good grasp of blogging etiquette — and a bunch of new online friends.

To sign up for Blogging 101 or Photo 101, fill out this quick form and indicate which challenge you’re interested in. You’re free to participate in both, but we recommend one at a time — both challenges will be offered again, and it’s easy to get overwhelmed — which is not our blogging goal!

Please note that you will not receive an automated confirmation, but you will get a welcome email with more detail before the challenges begin.

  1. Does it matter if you’re already posted a few things to your blog? I’ve been doing some hit and miss stuff on my blog that isn’t getting that much attention and signed up for the course hoping to learn how to do it right.

    1. Nope, anyone can participate — there are definitely lots of folks who’ve already started blogging, but want a little help getting focused and learning how all the parts work.

    1. Either use the form embedded right in this post, or, if you use the link, remove the “s” from the “https” — it’s triggering a security warning in your browser.

  3. I signed up for Blogging201 and got a confirmation email BUT… still do NOT have access to assignments or the Commons. I posted twice yesterday requesting access. I am missing out and seriously bummed. Thanks.

    1. I just re-sent the Commons invite, so check your email. The assignments are all published right here — there’s a link for Blogging 201 under the “Blogging U” section of the menu, and you can find all the assignments there.

  4. Yay! I wanted to do the Blogging 101 when it was last offered but I was heading out of town and life became crazy complicated going into the trip that I couldn’t even get started before I left. Now that I’m home, things are settled down and the timing couldn’t be better.

    1. Thanks! It’s the “s” in the “https” — it triggers a security warning. You can delete the s and it’ll work fine, or you can just fill out the form in this post.

  5. Really looking forward to Blogging 101 – all my posts so far are private and form a kind of diary/download. I guess this is like anything new, once you understand the basics of the etiquette the whole thing seems less daunting. Roll on 3 Nov!
