Community Pool

The place for advice, feedback, and friendly blogging chatter.

Have you just published a new post and are dying for some feedback? Did you recently start your blog and could use some layout or design advice from your more seasoned peers?

Tap into the wisdom of The Daily Post blogging community and leave your question here in the comments. Others can then click through and offer input either on your site, or in the comments here (feel free to indicate which you’d prefer).

To help us make the Community Pool a productive space for discussion, here are some tips you might find useful:

TIP: To keep from losing your place in the comment thread while you visit others’ blogs, right-click on a link to open it in a new tab or window.

  • While you’re not required to, we encourage everyone who requests feedback to also reply to at least one or two other bloggers who need some help. Spread the love!
  • The Community Pool comments section can get quite big — and starting duplicate threads doesn’t help. Thanks for not posting the same question more than once!
  • If you’re looking for quality feedback, be as specific as you can. Questions about a particular post tend to draw more comments than ones about entire blogs. Questions about specific design elements are more likely to be answered than ones asking for general layout advice.
  • We discourage leaving links without a more substantive message or question. These are often overlooked by other bloggers, and we frequently remove them to make the comment reading experience smoother.
  • Please keep all comments civil and constructive. The idea is to have fun — it’s a pool, after all!
  • If you haven’t looked at our Commenting Guidelines in a while, now might be a good time.
  • No running on the deck.

    1. Heya,

I really enjoyed your blog – the GIF of Leo on this post made me laugh (http://ohtheplacesyoullgomed.wordpress.com/2014/10/04/never-have-i-been-so-excited-to-have-possibly-gotten-a-75/) – certainly brought back a few memories of what it was like to get good grades at uni when you’ve put the hard work in 🙂

I’d suggest adding an “about me” page, I can’t seem to find one. I always like to see an overview of what the blog is about, as well as a bit about the writer behind the words! I hope this helps!

  1. Hi Clare, I like your choice of pictures. They trigger that one feels emotionally attached to your posts. I am rather new to blogging and started several days ago. I am still experimenting with topics and pictures. If somebody likes to comment, I would be happy about any suggestions or feedback. angleandviews.wordpress.com/

      1. Thank you, Karen. I did make an ‘about page’ and sometimes I stumble upon it. But honestly, I don’t know where to find it when I look for it myself… I’m not all that literate about WordPress… Should do some research. Thank you for your feedback. Just briefly visited your blog – looks really nice. Will take some time to visit longer.

    1. Hi – I would have thought, as a poet, it’s wonderful to set your words free into the world. You never know who they might touch. A blog is like a message in a bottle, isn’t it?

I especially liked your Essence of Suffering: Poem 1. Your blog looks a bit like a house that’s only just been moved into, but that’s what it is. I suppose you’ll furnish it as you please, as time goes by.

Good luck with your poetry and with your blog.

  3. Hi
I changed my blog theme from Greyzed to Yoko.
I like it very much however on each blog post at
the bottom my bio and my avatar appears. Since I have an
About page I think it distracts from my post.
Is there any way of taking that off?
Also … Is my sidebar too close to my writing area?
    Can that be adjusted?
Thank you for any help you can give me.

    1. Hi Jenn,
Your posts are fun, entertaining, and informative as relates to your topic! Of course any cat pictures are a bonus. 🙂
One tip I have picked up recently through reading daily posts- if you use a combination of more than 15 categories and tags I believe it actually bumps you out of search results if people search the Reader by topic. (I did notice on the most recent post you appear to have over that number.)
      Best,
      Karen 🙂

    1. I like your “fun fact” idea. That really was a fun fact.

You use some nice pictures in your posts, but I think you could use some more of them.

From reading your blog, it sound like you are very busy. You’re working towards your B.A., writing a book, working a full time job, and raising two kids. I don’t know how you manage to find time for everything.

  8. Hey guys!

I have a new blog up all about what’s currently happening in the science world. And I mean…..really new. I only have two posts up, but I would love any feedback! My second post includes an animation, and I’m hoping to incorporate videos in later posts – so any insight on good blog layouts/themes for videos would be great too!

    1. Your entries are very interesting. You need more content, but that will come with time.

But I’ll be honest, I found it difficult to understand. Especially the one from October 10th. After watching the video and re-reading the entry, I think I managed to piece it together. The video did help, but when I was reading your entry, I was getting lost in all the details. I think that sometimes it’s better to simplify when you write about complicated subjects. Maybe it’s just me who’s stupid, or you might be making your readers feel dumb.

      Feel free to criticize mine.

      1. Hi Robyn,

No worries – more content on the way! Thanks so much for your comments; it’s important that any audience member can read my posts and gain from them, so I’m glad you pointed out that they’re too complicated. I’m going to tinker with my writing tonight to make the content more accessible.

I took a look at your blog – lookin’ good! You’re writing reads really clear despite tough subjects (perhaps a good reference for me as I re-write). I’m curious, are the polls at the end of articles just for kicks or are you hoping to do something with the stats later?

      2. Hello.

Thanks for checking out my blog. It’s so rewarding when people read something I worked so hard on.

The polls were intended to be just for fun. I thought they would add a bit of variety and give the reader a chance to get involved. I was trying to make my blog a bit more interactive. But if you have suggestions as to what I could do with the results, I’m certainly open to idea.

    1. If I was reading your blog 15 years ago, I would have loved it. But now my life is very different, and I find it difficult to relate. In your most recent story, I found the cop to be the most relatable character, and I don’t think that’s what you were going for.

For me, the problem with this concept is that it’s inappropriate for the age group that would find this relatable, and those that are mature enough for this content would have outgrown that stage in their lives, and have their own wild and crazy stories. I’m sure there are some people that fall into that sweet spot right in the middle, but you might be alienating a large group of people.

It would be a shame because you have a great way of weaving humour into your writing. You also have an easy and flowing writing style that makes it easy to read. I just think you need to tweak your concept to appeal to a larger group of people.

    1. Hi Eric,
I think your writing is interesting and insightful. I like that you keep your paragraphs concise as well. My only teeny tiny bit of critique is that the font is so small it’s difficult to read, but that may be due to the theme you’ve chosen?
      Best,
      Karen

      1. Thank you very much for your comments. I’ll look into the font issue but I think you might be right, it may be related to the theme although I should be able to fix it. Once again thank you for your comment! 🙂

    2. Hey Eric! Just reviewed your site and here are my comments.
You’re an aspiring author and hence, the site design suits the theme of your blog, that’s awesome!

I like your style of writing and though I’ve yet to see any stories that you’ve written, I am excited for you as well and hence, I’m following, to be updated of your progress!

Anyway, it might just be me but I wanna point out about the lack of images in your posts, it might be better to use some images to help your readers visualize what you’re going to be talking about and get them ready for your posts.
But, like I’ve said, it could just be me so if this is your style and you’d like to stick with it, it’s your choice!

So far, I feel that everything seems to be in good order and you are definitely on the right track. Will be looking forward to your next post!

      1. Hi David, thanks for your comments! I’m going to try adding images to my posts in the future and see what comes of it. 😀 As far as stories go, I do have several projects on the go at the moment, one of which is a fantasy style trilogy i’m co-authoring with a friend of mine that I hope we can have part 1 finished in the first half of 2015 (we write in our spare time so it takes a bit longer for us to complete longer projects.) I’ll be certain to keep my blog readers updated as more information becomes available.

Thanks again for your comments, very much appreciate it!

    1. Welcome to the blogosphere! Glad to have you here with us!
I’ve just reviewed your blog and here my comments.

Blog style is simple but sleek. Vibrant colors make the site looks welcoming and positive.
Your first post tells us about you and I feel that it is a great first post because it conveyed just that!

I think it’d be great if you can write a little more and share on what you and your blog is all about in your “About Me” page cause when your blog explodes in future, not everyone would take the time to browse through all your posts till the first page to read about you because well, most people don’t have the time to!

All in all, I like the fact that you are a person who wish to help make a difference in the life of others and I hope to see more of your posts in future. Followed 😉

Should you have any questions, feel free to ask!
      Cheers for great first post!

I’d live sponge advice/thoughts about my header. I like the custom header I designed, but it doesn’t seem to fit quite right.. Also, I’d love advice on my writing, especially on my posts titled “be a hero” and “we stretch.”
