Community Pool

The place for advice, feedback, and friendly blogging chatter.

Have you just published a new post and are dying for some feedback? Did you recently start your blog and could use some layout or design advice from your more seasoned peers?

Tap into the wisdom of The Daily Post blogging community and leave your question here in the comments. Others can then click through and offer input either on your site, or in the comments here (feel free to indicate which you’d prefer).

To help us make the Community Pool a productive space for discussion, here are some tips you might find useful:

TIP: To keep from losing your place in the comment thread while you visit others’ blogs, right-click on a link to open it in a new tab or window.

  • While you’re not required to, we encourage everyone who requests feedback to also reply to at least one or two other bloggers who need some help. Spread the love!
  • The Community Pool comments section can get quite big — and starting duplicate threads doesn’t help. Thanks for not posting the same question more than once!
  • If you’re looking for quality feedback, be as specific as you can. Questions about a particular post tend to draw more comments than ones about entire blogs. Questions about specific design elements are more likely to be answered than ones asking for general layout advice.
  • We discourage leaving links without a more substantive message or question. These are often overlooked by other bloggers, and we frequently remove them to make the comment reading experience smoother.
  • Please keep all comments civil and constructive. The idea is to have fun — it’s a pool, after all!
  • If you haven’t looked at our Commenting Guidelines in a while, now might be a good time.
  • No running on the deck.

    1. I liked the colours and the positive messages in the blog. I clicked into the motivationalmonday post on 15 September – the message was uplifting. Perhaps move the two images at bottom of the post, to one being on top (or as a featured image) and one embedded in the post? As a reader I got a bit confused as to whether these were related posts with an image, or if they were trying to bring out the message in the original post.
      Keep it up!

    2. It would be great if you filled out the About section with some background on yourselves and what you hope to accomplish with your blog. Tell your readers why they should come to you for fashion, fitness, and life tips. Keep up the positivity!

      1. I’d like any advice on my writing style. Is it too personal? Is my page too busy? Is it easy to navigate? I’m pretty happy with everything so far, but when I go read other blogs I realize how much my writing lacks. Any suggestions? Here’s one of my most popular posts to date (keep in mind, my blog has been up for one month today). I do love reading all of your blogs! http://tripleaadventures.com/2014/08/28/things-no-one-tell-us/

    1. I think the first person bit in your about section is great. Some comments on the quote though: on my android phone the don’t of the quote is bigger than the rest of the page: I’m not sure how much I like this. Also the quote is quite long. Of you think it’s perfect to describe you then you should keep it. But it took me a while to understand it, so you may lose some visitors if they have a short attention span!

I live the lay out of the images in your blog posts. How do you do that?

      1. Thank you for these comments, let me see what I can do to shorten the quote (I completely agree that it’s too long)! … as for the layout of the images, I’m not quite sure but I generally choose tiled mosaic when inserting them (so you need to hover over them to read the caption).
Thanks again for your comments 🙂

    1. I followed you. 🙂 Glad to know that you are one of those good Muslim people. Spread peace!

With regards to your theme, I find it okay … easy to scroll and it still fits for your short form writing.

  1. Hello! I have just rewritten our ‘About Us’ Page and would like some feedback on it – whether it’s too long, bit boring(too much writing?) DO you think a collage of travel pictures would look better here? Also does the information on the top needed? Thanks so much for your feedback!

I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks again 🙂

    1. The length is okay. As a photographer (before), I would suggest that you have to balance the photos with the texts. You can do this by reducing the size of your photos … so that the whole page won’t appear too long to read.

    1. Hi Alex – can’t help with your layout, but just wanted to say that your blog is a wonderful read. Exercise and getting to understand how your own body works should be part of the prescription, along with insulin, for Type 1s. Your consultant at Guy’s must be directing other Type 1s to follow your blog! It’s chock-full of the kind of handy tips that translate from Mont Blanc down to the streets of everyday life. I hope you keep writing – and keep running.

      1. Sounds as if you’ve lucked out with your consultant – it’s good to hear that he’s so open-minded and open to trying new things himself.
We used to live in a village in Spain where the doctor used to prescribe a daily one hour walk for his older patients. You’d see them wearing new white trainers, walking along the mountain roads in little groups. It always struck me as a much better way of living than staying at home popping pills.

  2. Okay, so I’ve been waiting for Community Pool desperately since I need help! The thing is, I’ve been blogging for more than an year and have also built a considerable amount of audience but if you see my posts, it’s like no one reads what I write.
I’ve seen people who’ve been blogging for a very short time and their posts are booming with comments and suggestions. Not that any of this is going to stop me from writing, but some encouragement would help a great deal!
Please would you all be kind enough and check out my blog and read my posts, and tell me what is it that I’m doing wrong or if I am?
Or is the worst? Am I not a good writer? PLEASE. HELP. :\

    1. No, you’re a great writer. And I love your posts and the layout of your blog in general. Just keep writing. I’ve noticed that a lot of posts with many comments ask for feedback or opinions, whereas yours don’t tend to.

      1. Thank you, you’re very sweet. 🙂 That made me a little better. I’ll just keep writing I suppose. And so you mean I should ask for feed backs?

  4. There seems to be an http error when I try to download my images to the site. This is most annoying as I have potential clients wanting to view my work. Can you please suggest a way the problem can be rectified?
    Many thanks,

    1. I think it’s off to a great start! Your posts are easy to read and definitely relatable. I would recommend personalizing your blog a little more, starting with the header. Make it YOUR blog. I like it though, for sure.

      1. Oh my, so many nice kind words, any more and I will start to glow in the dark! Thank you Kimberlii for the review. I am relieved that my writing made sense.
I know I still need a lot of work on my sentence structure, grammars among other things. I’m not big on vocabs either and because of that my writings tend to be “wordy” and long-winded.
Anyway, thanks again so much for the positive feedback Kimberlii. You’ve put a huge smile on my face today 🙂 Hope you have a great day ahead!

  7. Hi All- Great to join in with this community. I am new to blogging and could use some feedback on both layout of the page – along with a reference for how to make changes (http://singlegirlinsuburbia.wordpress.com) and length of posts. I suspect they are a bit too long. These 2 are probably some of the “better” posts http://singlegirlinsuburbia.wordpress.com/2014/08/16/diving-in/; http://singlegirlinsuburbia.wordpress.com/2014/08/30/i-dont-know-lets-find-out/).

Also, aside from blogging being a place to process some of the challenges navigating this real-life stuff, I would like to build a bit of a community of others who are living a similar journey. But I also wish to remain somewhat anonymous. Suggestions on how to get the word out about this blog/build a follower-ship would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

    1. I’m not sure what specific kind of help you’re asking for; that said, I really recommend taking a look at our WordPress.com tutorial site, https://learn.wordpress.com/ — it’s very likely you’ll find the answers you’re looking for there.

  8. Hey everyone! I would really like for people to give me blog a read and give me any feedback.. This is the first one I have ever done and I really want to try and get it out there because I think it could really help people! I am more than happy to help anyone else out too but I am a rookie so take what I say with that in mind, just a very small fish in this massive food chain!

    1. Well, basically your blog’s focus is the main group of topics that the posts are centered around. I don’t think that has much to do with WordPress itself, but rather what kind of topics you discuss. It could be personal things, art, cooking, photography, and many more things. Good luck!
