Community Pool

The Community Pool is for those of you looking for feedback, whether on post ideas, writing, blog design and layout, or anything else.

If you have a post, page, or idea you want to bounce off someone, leave a comment. Your fellow bloggers can then click through and offer input either on your site, or in the comments here (feel free to indicate which you’d prefer).

Read on for the ground rules and to leave a comment . .

TIP: To keep from losing your place in the comment thread while you visit others’ blogs, right-click on a link to open it in a new tab or window.

  • You’ll get the best feedback if you can be as specific as possible about what you’d like people to respond to or where you’re struggling. If you simply leave a link to your blog, it’s likely to be overlooked.
  • Please keep all comments civil and constructive. We’re here to help and support one another, not to beat anyone down.
  • If you haven’t looked at our Commenting Guidelines in a while, now might be a good time.
  • No running on the deck.

    1. Starting with what you like might be a good start. And surely you’d better have your ‘About’ page done.

By the way, that is sure one big pool pic up there. On a cooking blog? People might think you’re offering some poolside culinary. Cheers! đŸ˜€

    1. You should write about what you want to write about. (It also helps if you know a little about the topic.) There are people who love mommy blogs and people who hate them. And there are people who are happy doing mommy blogs and people who aren’t.

There’s an audience for almost anything around here if you do your blog well.

    1. Hi TS. Cons? Not really. But I think in “Shamanism: Old & New” it would be better to have some space between paragraphs (like the way you do with the ‘About’ page). At least visually it would be more welcoming (or even more inviting). Cheers! đŸ™‚

    1. I think the layout could be improved a little, but it’s great to see something so unique.

First off, I wish your tagline were located immediately below the title. It’s not immediately clear what the blog’s about.

Second, could you make “things I love” more specific. Maybe “other Italian wonders” or something like that…

Third, I liked your header image until I realized that all the sheep had their butts facing me. Can you retake that shot in the same place and get some faces instead?

Lastly, there’s an option with the background image that lets you choose between scroll and fixed. Change your setting for that. It will distract people less from your most excellent photography. (And since your photography is the star of your blog, you might consider changing themes to something that will display the pictures in a larger size.)

    1. Great concept and mostly well laid out. The sidebar picture is especially good.

      However…

I don’t think that theme works so well for you. You’re obviously good at image editing so you’d probably be better served by a theme that would let you create a custom header and background. The top third of your page feels really cluttered, but that’s the theme’s fault… not yours.

Also, you definitely need the “recent posts” widget. Since you’re only displaying 2 posts before visitors have to click “older posts,” the extra links in the sidebar would help a lot.

  1. I write a weekly fiction blog dealing with a variety of life experiences. Now that I have set up a good posting schedule and have a decent amount of work available to view, I am looking at ways to reach the right audience. I know I could use some help with efficient tagging specifically, but would be open to any good advice. I’d prefer responses on this page.

  2. Hi there! I am currently a pretty part-time blogger but aspiring to be more consistent and, frankly, interesting. I have a small blog on a fitness website. I blog about the highs and lows of being the wife of a personal trainer. I write mostly motivational or humorous posts with a few fitness tips thrown in. I guess I’m looking for feedback to make my blog seem more…blogg-ish, less amateur. This is a link to my Mother’s Day blog.

  4. I would love your thoughts regarding the readability of my blog. Is the concept interesting (if not how can I edit it to be more community oriented/entertaining)? Is my writing engaging? How can I improve the overall quality of my blog?
