Topic #189:
Is it possible to know someone too well? If that’s true, why do we typically have the goal of always trying to get to know people better?

There is a difference between “someone” and (people), the “someone” is close, the (people) are the one’s you want to get to know, quite an easy question really,

Sometimes people cross there boundaries. We are not THAT close.

Sometimes we think we do but then we discover later that we don’t. May be being familar, yes. A person is unique, constantly changing, evolving. That what’s make us interesting

Impossible. We know people daily but in situations of war, we do not know them at all. They could turn you in , sell info for money, no only God knows.

Is it possible to know yourself? Or does every day bring something new onto our horizons that expand who we are?
Deep, lasting friendships are uniquely and richly rewarding – like pulling on an old pair of gloves. But people can always spring something new onto you. That’s life. One big adventure.

Love that metaphor “like pulling on an old pair of gloves.” I guess for a native Hawaiian like me, it would be throwing on a comfortable muumuu, or pair of flip flops. But as familiar and comfy as they might be, clothes can get holes in them, and slippers can sometimes hurt if they didn’t fit right from the get go. But we don’t just throw them out. We hang onto them…
i guess we do the same with people about whom we care…enough. 🙂

As a rule I never claim to know any one too well as people tend to be full of surprises no matter how well you think you know them. So I do always leave room for the unexpected surprise in people!

Looks like the person’s reply above got repeated instead of your own reply being posted. Seems to be a problem with the reply remaining intact after clicking “post comment.” Have noticed that happening on various other blogs where I’ve commented. I’ve always made sure to delete my comment from the “leave a reply” box, before I move on. Not sure if WordPress is aware of this occurrence.

Interesting choice of topics. I’m surprised to see how many people think differently than I do…

I don’t think it’s possible. I mean, come to think of it, we don’t even know ourselves that much.

No, even within a life span no one can get to know about anyone too well. Change and death are the only constant things in this world. Every other thing change. All beings change their ways of thinking, acting and reacting. No one of us will act; think the same way throughout our life span. Therefore, in this changing world its impossible to know someone too well.

It’s a yes and no question. Some people are by nature candid and would show their nature without reserve. Others are reserved and may not show how they truly feel until in very extreme situations (e.g. life and death situation…that’s when u see some real colors).
Also, like what pink woods said, some of us don’t even know ourselves…so it may be questionable if we can understand others properly. And there are some of us who can size people up pretty well. Maybe it’s like jackpot since they managed to lockdown on a main trait on an individual most of the time.
I think people always want to know another person better because:
1. Fear of the unknown (for the non-adventurer),
2. Exploitation (for those who always love a “bargain”),
3. Better connection (for those who like company of people or looking for specific people).
And maybe a combination of the above.

No, I believe so because an individual always change everyday due to the information they are exposed to throughout the day. Therefore, it is impossible to ever know someone too well.

Perhaps it is possible to know someone too well. It depend on the person in question – is it a positive insight or does it cause you to run, run, run!

YES, especially if you two grew up together or you’ve been friends/bestfriends for so long that sometimes even if the other person doesn’t say any word… you know what he/she’s thinking.

Yes, because knowing someone too well can result in bad memories and not being able to let go of that person’s past. Resulting in stress, paranoia.
