What one feature do you wish WordPress.com had?

Topic #154:

Ok. This is one is a bit of a cheat, as it’s kinda, sorta, my job to find ways to make WordPress.com better. But since you’ve been using WordPress all these many weeks, to make all those fine posts, every day (or week) even when you didn’t really want to, why not write a post about either: a) Your feature wishlist (what do you wish WordPress.com did?) or b) Your top complaints, especially as it regards being a frequent blogger (which all of you are).

  1. It would be nice for people commenting on my blog to only have to fill in their name, or log in through facebook. I think a lot of peeps out there don’t want to spread their email address. Now it’s email + name or nothing at all….

  2. I have 3 more to add:
    1) I’d like the ability to select the specific tags or categories I would like to display on my site (instead of having an all-or-nothing option).
    2) I’d like to be able to format picture caption text using HTML code.
    3) On the support side, I would appreciate a collection of printable step-by-step instruction pages on how to complete various tasks within WP (on the site admin side).

All these things being said, I think the WordPress team is truly the best out there, and this *free* blogging product is simply outstanding. I admire that you all seek to engage in continuous improvement, and hope you are finding these comments/suggestions helpful. I would encourage you to offer a future topic along the lines of, “What are we at WordPress doing right, that you all absolutely love?” Everyone should get some well-deserved props now and again. 🙂

  3. I am very happy working WITH the best blog providing experience going. The operative word is “with”. Sometimes it all leaves me completely in the dust.
About ten years ago I was an intelligent, literate, knowledgeable person. Now that so many are into the computer world, I need re-education. I cannot even intelligently select the widgets I desire on my page because I do not have any idea what most of the cg terms mean, although sometimes they are in a dictionary with alternated meanings. So–
    1. A Glossary of invented words or invented meanings for the actual literates who need their dictionaries updated, would be so nice.
    2. Careful attention to beginners, which you do provide, to a certain extent, yes, but I think immersion in your world causes you to forget your former world, which is my world, and to fail to realize how GREAT is the leap for some of us.
    3. A “daily hints” feed that some of us could opt for, that would feed us, literally, the dumb stuff we somehow should already know.
    4. Suggestions, up front, as to other sites that could more fully inform us. I am truly willing to dig out the information for myself, if only I could learn where to find it. For instance, I recently subscribed to a wonderful blog and bought an ebook there, only to find most of the information rapidly sliding into obsoleteness, as I have always known most cg info does slide. My bad, but how and where do I get updated? GUIDANCE, PLEASE!
    5. And if I really ought to go back to college, what topics should I seek in the course content, so I know that I will know what I need to know?
OR IF ANYONE OUT THERE COULD TAKE ME IN HAND AND HELP ME, I WOULD APPRECIATE IT.
Also, I could use tips about how to find more time for living what I am blogging about. Thanks!!!!!!!!!

  4. I don’t think anyone has asked yet for this features and so here goes: I would like the ability to have subcategories for my links. For example, I have static links for favorite sites. Recently though, I wanted to add links for book tours but had to create a new links widget for each book tour instead of just adding to my initial links widget.
Beyond that (and those suggestions which I seconded) I’m happy with WordPress. It is a wonderful blogging platform.

  8. I agree with what others have already said; the ability to use different fonts, java scripts, multi language posting system, and the ability to play BACKGROUND MUSIC would be nice!

  9. Thanks for asking. I love wordpress.com but, I would love to see…
    1. A calendar feature so I could post events around the Delaware Valley. Add the ability for others to add an event – after approval of course. Google Docs is okay, but I would like an integrated one.
    2. Customization, please. I hate to say it, but it was extremely hard leaving my beautiful, easy to customize Blogger blog, even for WordPress.com’s superior features. Why? Why can’t we customize our look and feel? Even Drupalgardens.com lets you customize. Could we please be able to customize like the framework and child themes available for WP? Or Blogger?
3.Widgets for book suggestions/reviews/what I’m reading now – LibraryThing, GoodsReads, Shelfari. And the ability to make the widget the whole page on a blog. I don’t want to crowd too many widgets on my sidebars and footers. It would be a colorful and exciting addition to the blog experience.
4.I would love to be able to add a weather or moon phase widget like I did with Blogger.
Thank you and have a nice day.

    3. Being able to embed a Keynote presentation, Pages or Numbers doc from Apple’s iWork.com.

Thank you very much and have a nice day.

  12. I’d like my commenters the ability to see a toolbar for their words – like Bold, Ital, etc. For now they must use or know HTML and it’s a nuisance.

I agree with others that some more flexibility on the themes would be helpful. Take for example your Theme Pilcrow. Good but I can’t stand the color light blue that is the sidebar, etc. And I don’t want to buy any CSS. I stay with the theme Vigilance because it hs the more theme options for my photography based blog.

    1. I too, would like to be able to customize my favourite theme, TwentyEleven. Just tried out their new CustomDesign [you can preview for free]. I like everything about the theme except the black navbar, so I changed the colour of it. Looked really neat, but … neat for $30 a year?! Nah, I don’t think so… In that case I’d rather spend my money on self hosted.

  13. Maybe it already does this and I’m too stupid to know how, but I wish we could insert pictures more than one at a time. I know we can upload more than one at a time, but we keep having to go back to the gallery to insert.

  14. Another thing that I would like to see is more 3 column themes that allow for a *generous* middle column. Generous meaning: you can post photos, write a decent chunk of text, and NOT have a microscopic font size.

Right now Garland is the only theme that does all of those things well, and it would be nice to see a newer theme that allowed this option. There are hundreds of 2 column options, I don’t understand why we can’t have more 3 column themes. Something similar to Garland but a theme that offered more of the “new perks” that are available on newer themes.

  15. It would be a great feature if WordPress would let us edit our own comments on other folks blogs. I get so frustrated when I post and it looks like I never learned to spell or I misspoke and instead of doing a quick edit, I have to write another comment to explain the typos and what I meant to say.
If there was a window of time where we could edit our comments on other folks blogs, it sure would be a big help.
    🙂

  16. Posting photographs is often confusing and difficult for me. I once downloaded several photos that I intended to use in a post about mushrooms and the entire thing was lost. Also the positioning of a photo does not always come out right.

  18. Here’s a novel idea, which I surely don’t expect to see happen, but I’ll post it anyway. Link to external (that is, offsite) CSS. I pay the premium for WordPress CSS, and I maintain my blog in exactly the same form as my private website. My WordPress blog even uses images from my website instead of my uploading them to WordPress. My website treats my blog as, pretty much, just another one of its pages. Linking to my website’s CSS would surely eliminate a lot of duplication of effort.
