In case you missed it on Freshly Pressed last week, here’s an excerpt from Blog more. It is good for your health:
Many people don’t write because they don’t know what to write about, or feel like it will be a waste of time, they are wrong. Writing is both enjoyable and healthy not because of the words you write but because of the process you go through to come up with the words you are going to type. Austin Gunter from TechRanch Austin tweeted “Writing really helps. It’s like Airborne for the heart.” I agree.
Writing is therapeutic. I agree with Miguel de Cervantes‘ quote: “The pen is the tongue of the mind” and this can be both good and bad, this could get you in trouble if you are not careful about the topics you write about. However, the therapeutic value will be there, always. For some, writing is a way to communicate ideas and thoughts with others in a very comfortable way… because you can read, edit, read again and edit one more time before you share it with others, you just don’t have that benefit when you are talking. So yes, the pen is the tongue of the mind but is under much more control than the mouth itself.

What an incredibly impactful article. Very few people possess this much insight. If only we would each learn from this and take it to heart.

I recently heard about a pain study that would seem to confirm what you are suggesting. Subjects were divided into two groups and both were asked to keep one hand submerged in very cold water as long as they could, after a while they would be forced to remove their hands due to the pain. The first group was asked to remain completely silent, whereas the second was told they were free to express themselves freely and even swear as much as they wanted. The study found a significant statistical difference between the two groups, with those who expressed themselves being able to keep their hands in the cold water longer than their silent counterparts.

I would have blogged even if it was harmful for health. Glad that it’s the opposite and I can show people a reason for my craziness about blogging. 😀

When I’m really stressed or feeling horrible, sometimes it helps to write it all down. You sort of re-order your thoughts and face all your worries. Then, when I’m done, I can never look at it till years and years later, or all those horrible feelings will come back again. But it sure helps just to write it!

It’s obviously a great way to get your opinions out there and have discussions with people on the things you are passionate about. Mine would be baseball.

Aptly said, er, written. Writing gets thoughts, ideas, feelings, opinions, etc. out of my head to make room for more!

Such wonderful therapy for the brain. I have only recently started writing but I enjoy is so much. If I cannot think of anything to write about I look at Plinky prompts where there is always something that will trigger off a thought.:-))

I would agree that writing has a good effect on your mind. I cannot always write the kind of stuff I would like to for legal reasons (no one want to get sued!) but the act of sitting in front of a blank screen does have a positive influence on my thought process.
I started because I believed it would help me with writing articles, typically 1500 – 2000 words and I am sure it has been beneficial.

great post Erica ! You put into words what I’d been thinking a long time. I always wondered why I put so much time into blogging, and why time seemed to pass so quickly whenever I started a blog. More power to your efforts and thanks again.
