Comment Notifications!
A few months ago we added Notifications to the WordPress.com Toolbar and recently we released a Chrome extension so that you can always keep up with the activity on your blog. Today we’re adding comment notifications, complete with comment moderation and reply functionality. When your post receives a comment, you’ll get a Notification that looks something like this:
If you’re using threaded comments, you’ll see if someone responded directly to you, right in the notification.
You will see Approve, Spam, and Trash links in your comment notification if you have permission to moderate comments, allowing you to moderate the comment from within the notification:
Clicking Reply automatically approves a comment and displays an area for you to type a reply in. When you’re done, just click Reply and you can get back to whatever you were working on, without having to navigate to the dashboard to manage your comments.
You can still manage comments in your dashboard, but we hope you’ll find the comment notification a convenient shortcut.
For more information about comments and comment moderation: Comments, Manage Comments.

I have been getting my comments by mail which was easier for me to answer (dial up) This eliminates a step and I love it. Thanks WordPress, you guys are just superb.

Hi, this is great! WP just keeps getting better and better! Do you think that you could release the same Chrome Extension for Foirefox too? (I had an issue with Firefox and my blog and had to switch over to Chrome and had the same problem and just switched back to Firefox yesterday and i miss my little Chrome extension soooo much, so pleeeeease make a Firefox eqivalent) Good Job!!!

A Firefox extension is pretty likely. 🙂

I am not sure when this notification feature was added since I am not a frequent blogger, but I noticed that when someone likes your post, it will also appear on notification. The thing is, that person seems like a foreigner while my post is written in my local language. I am just wondering if this commonly happens because people want to attract attention so the person who receives “like” will visit their blogs. It is not necessary, but I find the idea of randomly liking or leaving comment without any meaning like that is irritating. Oh, well. Not that it is a big trouble.

Sounds like a good idea! Thank you.

Do you have plans to add notifications to the Android App, as well? One that shows up in the notification bar where weather apps, update notifications, etc. are displayed?

The new feature is terrific. I love the fact that we can respond to comments on other blogs from our dashboard… Brilliant! What I don’t love is not seeing a legitimate comment I left earlier show up on this forum… 😦

BTW – Being a Boulderite, don’t you hate it when all the snow falls down here instead of the mountains? Let’s go skiing!

The snow this year never seems to be falling where and when I want it to. But really I shouldn’t complain, the skiing here even with “bad” snow is still quite good.

We have a lot of data showing that publicizing your posts on Twitter and Facebook can increase your readership. Take a look at how to turn on Publicize. Another great way is to find other blogs on WordPress.com discussing similar topics and engage in discussion on them. Many people will then follow your links back to your blog and may start following your blog that way.
But the most important thing to do is to write. 🙂

I am really enjoying this new function. It creates more of a community when you see the replies to comments you have made on other blogs. In addition time is saved as a step is skipped when approving and responding to a comment made on your own blog. This functionality helps me to enjoy the blogging experience even more.

What we also need, please, is a easy way to look on your comments in another blogs, like a social media move, especially in the wordpress App.

The comment notification will show up anytime someone replies directly to a comment of yours on another blog. Like this one should 🙂
Is that what you mean, or is it that you can’t see a long enough history of the notifications?

So *is* there a way to disable this feature? Please? I don’t need the notifications and the toolbar thingy just covers up more of my screen and makes the pages slower to load up and so on. I’d like to get rid of it.

I hope the Dashboard does not disappear. The Site Stats page is now that bright-white impossible to read, and the Blog Surfer is gone (so I have to click on posts individually in order to read them – takes much longer). I much prefer the Dashboard and Blog Surfer functions as the WP page is often slow to load and it’s very hard to read. Please at least allow us that option instead of making cosmetic changes and robbing us of the Dashboard.

Yours, very puzzled.

Were you commenting from a different account than the one that you wrote your post with, or were you not logged in?
But its possible there is a bug, can you give me a link to the post and comment that gave you trouble? Thanks.

Do you want some screen shots or what? it’s a recurrent problem – although ironically it’s not happening now, but there again, I’m having to comment from my blog as I can’t manage it from the WordPress blog!! Thanks for the offer of help by the way 🙂
LikeLike
The key things I need is a link to the comment that is showing up in your notifications that shouldn’t be, and maybe a description of how you created that comment (was it through the WordPress app? On the blog? Through a comment notification? etc) That should allow me track down what is going on. A quick look at your recent comments didn’t reveal anything obviously wrong to me.
We’re always happy to help. Thanks for taking the time to help us track down the problem.

Neat, I quite like this feature! Took me a while to figure out how to return to the original site though, it could be a bit more intuitive. Still, great job, WordPress!
LikeLike
Do you mean you followed a link within the notification and it changed which page you were on?
All links in the notification should open a new tab/window in your browser so you don’t lose your place. But now that I think about it any links in the notification itself may change what page you are on. We’ll work on fixing that. Thanks!

I believe this is overkill. I do not get the traffic like Carl above, but this notification of interaction I do get on my blog and now with any comments I leave on other sites is a bit much. I really like the Dashboard so use it often and find out there what comments and replies I receive. I am not asking this to be disabled, seeing how popular it is with others, but could users be given the option to turn it off? Or if this is not possible, could the notification turn itself off, if I view the comments from anther source?

We are investigating a couple of ways to improve the experience for bloggers with larger numbers of comments. Stay tuned. 🙂
