Now More Than Ever: Just Write

Writers are as different as the stories they produce, and their ideal writing environments vary no less. One thing most writers agree on, though, is that one of the toughest challenges is overcoming distraction. At WordPress we’ve always believed that when you’re using the application, the focus should be on what’s most important — your content. In the spirit of making things faster and simpler, today we are introducing a couple of changes to your dashboard that will make it easier for you to just write.

A Fresher, Faster Dashboard

The most noticeable change is that the dashboard looks a little different. Nothing drastic, just a little facelift intended to make managing your content easier. Moving the left menu up means more room if you tend to keep a couple of sections open at the same time. Fiddling with the font sizes in the header also created more vertical space, so you can make your writing window/post box bigger on the editing screens (you can drag the lower right corner if you use the Visual editor, and/or change the default height of the writing window in Settings → Writing). We’ve also replaced the icons in the Visual Editor toolbar with new ones designed by Ben Dunkle, the same person who designed the navigation icons for the dashboard, that we think are less distracting and fit better. You’ll also be saying goodbye to the “New Post” button that used to live in the header. We’ve added an “Add New” menu to the admin bar instead, for faster, easier content creation. Oh, I almost forgot — we’ve made a number of performance improvements to make everything in the Dashboard run just a little bit faster. Yay!

Goodbye, IE6

With this update, WordPress has discontinued support for Internet Explorer 6. It has required increasingly complex code trickery to make the WordPress dashboard work in the IE6 browser, which was introduced 10 years ago and does not support current web standards. Even Microsoft is counting down to IE6’s extinction! If you try to log in to your Dashboard using IE6, it will be pretty broken — but don’t worry, you’ll see a red alert box that provides a link you can use to upgrade. What do we mean by broken? This is how the new dashboard looks in modern browsers:

WordPress viewed in modern browser

WordPress viewed in modern browser

…and this is what it looks like in IE6:

WordPress viewed in IE6 browser

WordPress viewed in IE6 browser

So please, if you’re still using IE6, upgrade!

While we were at it, we started looking at other older browsers, and it makes us cringe a little when we see people using them, because the web could be so much better for them (not to mention more secure) if they would update to their favorite browser’s current version. Starting with this update, if you log in to your WordPress site using an outdated browser, an orange alert will appear on your Dashboard screen letting you know, and will provide links to the browser updates and to Browse Happy, where you can learn a little more about your options.

Approve and Reply

This is a small improvement, but it feels huge. If you’re like me, sometimes you might not want to approve a comment unless you have written a reply. It used to be that if you clicked to reply to a pending comment in your Dashboard, your reply would be published but not the original comment. I know, I know, it’s not like it is difficult to click on Approve. But! We’ve made it better anyway. 🙂 Now when you reply to a pending comment, the submit button will say “Approve and Reply,” and will perform both actions at the same time. After using this for less than a minute I was completely hooked.

Introducing Distraction-free Writing

The other big change — one that we love — is a major upgrade to the full-screen writing experience. The normal posting screen is great: you can set it up the way you want it, and you can add and edit every piece of metadata related to your post in addition to writing it. Sometimes you just want to focus on writing, though, without all the extras, right? If that’s how you feel, you may have used the full-screen writing mode in the Visual Editor  before, accessible by clicking a blue screen-shaped icon in the top row of the toolbar. That full-screen mode took up the full browser screen, which was cool, but then your lines of text went all the way across, making it harder to read and edit your creations. The Visual Editor toolbar stayed up top, which was handy if you wanted to add a picture or a link, but was a little bit distracting because of the colors. And if you zoomed or resized your browser, that was not good.

Everything about this feature revamp is designed to relax you, and allow you to find your groove without distraction. There’s a lot to point out — because hey, we’re proud of it — and the new look is quiet and deceptively simple.

  • It’s available for all users, whether you use the Visual Editor or HTML. Visual Editor users will notice a more laid-back icon to enter distraction-free mode, and HTML users will see a new [fullscreen] button. Click one and you’re on your way.
  • Distraction-free writing mode still takes over the browser window, but the writing area is optimized for a comfortable line length and easy reading and editing. Editor styles set by themes are also supported.
  • The formatting header is shown when you first arrive on the screen, to orient you, then fades away so you can focus on your writing. Move your mouse to indicate that you want access to these items and it will magically reappear.
  • Only the most-used formatting and embedding icons are shown, reducing visual noise, along with a Save button in the upper right (you’ll need to go back to the regular editor to publish), and the word count in the lower left.
Distraction-free writing, with toolbar

Completely distraction-free view

Completely distraction-free

  • Keyboard shortcuts are supported.
  • You can switch beween Visual and HTML modes while in distraction-free writing mode.
  • Have I mentioned how restful this screen feels when you’re writing? Well, I have now. 🙂

I never used to like full-screen mode for writing, but I love distraction-free mode. Try it, and I bet you will, too!

Tip: make your browser go full screen if you really want to be distraction-free. Press F11 on Windows, or Command+Shift+F on a Mac. To disable full screen, use the same keyboard shortcut, or move your mouse to the top of the screen to reveal the menu.

Get Featured on Freshly Pressed

We hope you’ll enjoy these updates as much as we do. As always, let us know what you think, but this time, let’s mix it up:

  • If you encounter a bug, something looks weird/broken, or you need help with the new distraction-free writing feature, please let us know in the special distraction-free writing support forum instead of leaving a comment about the problem on this post. Note that we’ll be continuing to touch things up as needed based on your feedback for the next couple of weeks.
  • There’s also a new distraction-free writing support page for reference.
  • Leave your feedback on the design update in a comment on this post.
  • To comment on the new  distraction-free writing feature, go try it first! Write a post and see how it feels. Give it a “just write” tag. Then come back and tell us what you thought about the experience and give us your feedback in a comment on this post. Include a link to the first post you wrote in dfw mode so we can check you out.

I will personally read every first “just write”-tagged post that is linked in the comments within 48 hours. I will (completely subjectively) choose my five favorites posts and feature them on Freshly Pressed, and will also send the authors a WordPress swag pack (buttons, stickers, maybe a surprise or two) as a prize. Note: I am easily swayed by correct spelling and grammar, so be sure to make use of the built-in spelling and grammar checker!

Update 5/31/2011: I chose my winners! With hundreds of posts to read I couldn’t narrow it to 5, so I filled up Freshly Pressed today with my picks. Here are the winners in no particular order:

Yes, put a fork in IE6, by all means. It’s been harder to kill than Netscape 4….

I’ll have to try the distraction-free thing. I’ve been writing posts in a text editor and pasting them in.

Is there an option to increase the font size of the dashboard? The font size of the stats section is smaller than previous version. I would not want to mess with my browser’s zoom-in/out settings.

Just tried my first hand at DFW here: http://oscartini.com/2011/05/19/ill-never-let-go/. I like the feature, but became a lil alarmed when I inserted a photo and couldn’t figure out how to scroll past it to my previous text. Will definitely play around with it!

At last, the approve and reply button has been invented as if it was very hard to create way back then.
    Thanks a lot, WordPress.
However, this new look makes me feel nostalgic about how WordPress looked like many years ago.

You sound grumpy! I find that cookies, kittens, and mystery novels can take care of that, even when software developers don’t move as quickly as I’d like or with my sense of priority. 🙂 Sorry you were disappointed, but at least you can enjoy approve and reply now!

sorry to say this but I liked the full-screen mode as it was before – this “distraction-free” mode feels way too weird, I can’t write like that. If the box stayed in place I’d be happy, but a whole totally blank screen feels too empty. The big empty screen is a distraction for me 😦

I love the “Just Write” feature; truly there was no distraction but pure romance with the words. The white space surrounding the post that I am typing feels like I was writing it at the beach – pure solace and relaxing. Here is my 1st ever post using the feature http://ittakes10k.wordpress.com/2011/05/20/1-219-of-10000-born-with-this-package and I am sure that I’ll use it for a long long time. While I liked the look of the old Dashboard better (it just felt cleaner to me, somehow), I absolutely love everything else about the new one. 😀 It looks both smoother and smarter – thank you!

(Oh, re Tetkorax’s post above, I too run Firefox 4 and I have had no problems whatsoever with the upgraded Dashboard. Then again, I have my browser set to automatically clear its cache and history when I close it – saves me from having to remember to do it myself. 😉 )

This change seems good in many ways, but, I must say I really miss being able underline words and the ability to use color in the fonts…. I also miss being able to indent my quotes more…. The block is somewhat okay, but does not really set apart a quote as nicely as a few indents and a change of color in the font…..

I also like being able to put in extra spaces between phrases and sentences, as that makes reading more comprehensible to many readers with reading challenges…. When everything is squished together, much is lost for many readers…. We need to consider everyone’s needs when formatting what we write…. That’s what reading. sharing, and learning is all about.

I do appreciate all that WordPress does to make posting here safe for everyone…. Thank you very much.

We’re still facing the same problem on Twenty Ten when used on Firefox: In the editor, if we make a sentence bold and red, it is not showing red, although it is red when posted. This is a hindrance when writing. Plus, a new problem was added with this new change that you introduced: in the fullscreen mode, we can’t make any sentence red… The toolbar does not show that tool…

Hoping to see things get better.

C’est parfait. Merci donc à WordPress et à son équipe toujours attentive à ce que la rédaction d’un texte soit la plus confortable possible et privilégiant, de ce fait, le contenu.

If you’re at the point of wanting to monetize your blog, then you’re probably also at the point where you should start thinking about WordPress.org and paying for regular hosting services, so you can have full control. with the new DFW feature.
The writing is pleasant and convenient, but I miss the formatting buttons. I always write my blogs using the HTML view because it gives me more control than the Visual view. In the DFW mode (using HTML view) most of the formatting buttons that I use very often (bold, italic, blockquote, list tags, etc.) are not available. There’s plenty of room for them in the disappearing tool bar, so I’m not sure why they are not available. This lack is a killer for me, even though I otherwise like DFW.
My browser is Firefox 3.6.17. I’ll try it again when I upgrade to Firefox 4 in case that’s the problem.
By the way, I REALLY LIKE the recently introduced Writing Helper. Both of its features are extremely helpful for me.

Having freaked out a little last evening thinking I had inadvertently done *something* to my Dashboard I am very relieved to see that it was the WP team making changes behind the scenes.

Thanks for the simpe detailed explanation (I like detail) and I’m a bit simple.

One, ok two, suggestions for improvement please:

I suggested a while back the possibility to copy-a-post as a template, and yeahhhh! you gave us “copy post” (Thank-you!)

…but my joy was short-lived when I found that it seems you can only copy an EXISTING post… the posts I want to copy are in my schedule and are *not yet* published.
Might it be possible to also copy a not-yet published post please please please?

If it IS possible to copy a post in the schedule, then I need help to find out how please (I warned you I was simple, yes?).

Also, if we DO want to copy an already published post, could there please be a box to check/uncheck to copy with or without photos?
(I know, I know, I ask a lot, I will post paracetamol if I’m giving you headaches LOL) because my blog is photo heavy and I need to spend as much time deleting all the photos one by one as I would have to have NOT used the copy feature and done a new post from scratch.

The adjustable writng space is a feature I’m sure I’m going to love too…. Thanks WP Team!

Can you now make it work on the iPad, pretty please? I mean, most things seem to work, and the fact that in the textbox white text is written on white background should be something that is manageable to address for whizzkid-programmers like yourselves. And yes, I know that there is an iOS app, but it is simply not good enough. As I have written elsewhere, I wish there would be no free official iOS app for WordPress, as it gets not enough love to be anything more than an emergency tool, but as at the same time it discourages other programmers to build a real good app that they could charge for.

Improvements looks great! But I’m missing the Log Out in the upper right corner! Where is it?

The Distraction Free Writing seems nice. I feel like going on writing when I use it! Excellent work guys!

Anyway, check out my first post about it on http://thoughtsofthequill.wordpress.com/2011/05/20/first-post-using-distraction-free-writing/

The distraction-free features, surprisingly, are distraction free. I really enjoyed the normal line lengths in the text editor. Prior to these changes, the full screen mode was not really that useful. Thanks again for your continued improvements. Cheers to distraction-free blogging.

Thank you for adding new features I didn’t even know I was missing … like being able to increase the post box size by dragging the corner!

That one was there before, actually, I just mentioned it because I know a lot of people never notice the little “drag handle” in the corner. Glad it helped!

I really like this new feature, being a mom with kids there are enough distractions, let alone on the screen. Thank you for providing the option! http://aprilcoen.wordpress.com/2011/05/20/recovery-and-hope/

I love the distraction-free feature! This fit perfectly with a post I was writing yesterday (to be published today) about finding ways to manage the little things that distract you from writing, so I included it in my post because I’m always distracted if there are things for me to click on.

Thanks so much, both for the changes and for considering posts for Freshly Pressed!

WP looks better but… I think, it is running slower. Oh, well. Maybe, it is just me and my connection.

Thank you WordPress for the new look and the new distraction-free writing feature. I love it! Have just publish my first post using the full screen editor. I often load my photographs first, and then get inspiration from them to write the text. I loved being able to see my photographs properly, and then write my text and captions “around” them.

My first post using the DFW feature is at:

The new look is awesome! Writing is easier. I could concentrate better just on my writing and thoughts. Because earlier I used to type my blog post on word and then simply paste it on the page, but this is better than word even. Definitely cleaner, feels like a lot more air to breath in 🙂

Jane, I just used the new features to write my lastest blog article…Usually I write it in Word and copy & paste it into WordPress to add photos, etc. but now I get the same view using the full screen option!

Check out my first post in dfw mode at http://jonibeach.com/blog/

I always used the iphone, ipad, and mac application to post. Today, I adventured myself in the online browser posting section. Awesome. I say so, because there are many more features included here, that I wasn’t aware. I was afraid that being online, it would limit the possibilities and flexibility. I was wrong.

Regarding the facelift. beautiful. Overall, great job.
