We All Like to Reblog

Have you ever come across a blog post that you enjoyed so much you wanted to easily share it with the readers of your own blog? Sure, you can copy and paste the link and perhaps even a snippet of text with your own comments, but overall it’s not a particularly enjoyable experience. We wanted to change this and make sharing other posts with your readers as easy as posting to your blog.

Today we’re introducing a new like and reblog feature enabled across the whole of WordPress.com. When you’re logged in to WordPress.com and viewing a post you’ll notice a new link in the admin bar at the top of the page. If you really enjoyed the post then you can click the “Like” link to signify this. This will then show the author how many readers liked the post.

You Like ThisOnce you’ve liked the post, the link will change to “You like this” and you’ll be presented with some new options via a drop down menu. You can also access this menu at any time in the future by hovering over the “You like this” link in the same way other menu items work.

QuickPress Reblog

When you reblog a post the details are auto populated on the QuickPress form.

If you decide that you want to share the post with your own readers, you can click the “Reblog this post” link and you’ll be taken to the new QuickPress tab on the WordPress.com home page. This will auto-fill a snippet of the post text, a link back to the original post, and a link to the blog. If the post includes any images we’ll also automatically add a thumbnail image to the reblog post. Finally you can add your own comments to the reblog post then select which blog you’d like to post it to (if you have more than one).

Even if you are not going to reblog a post you can use the QuickPress tab as a centralized and easy way to post to any of your blogs across WordPress.com.

Posts I Like

Alongside the new QuickPress tab you’ll also notice there is a “Posts I Like” tab. This will aggregate all of the posts that you have liked across any WordPress.com blog.

Likes

Browse all the posts you like with full post display and a handy search tool.

Instead of this just being a list of post titles, we fetch the whole post content along with any media so that you can use this tab as a place to browse any of the posts you like at a later date.

There’s also a handy search tool that will allow you to easily find that awesome post you want to reblog, but it’s just been a little too long to wade through all the other great posts you’ve liked since. Once you’ve found the post you can reblog it simply by hitting the “Reblog Post” button.

All these features are now live and ready to be used (maybe you’ve already noticed the “Like” link for this post?) so go forth and start liking and reblogging, we hope you find it useful.

    This sounds like a great idea. I have been liking a few posts already today. I also want to say thank you for such a great, yet free, blog site. Though, once I have the money, I want to buy the WordPress software instead. Keep up the great work.

    When I first saw this new thing on my dashboard this morning, I clicked on it to see what it was–and instantly it told me I “liked” the blog I was reading–which I didn’t. Where is the “undo” button?

    I would like to request WordPress.com to include an opt-out option for the reblogging feature.

    This feature enables copyright violation, in particular the ability to easily save whole copies of my posts. My copy does get stolen from time to time and I have my RSS feed set to summary so as not to enable copyright violation. Fortunately, I have that option with the RSS feed, but this is not the case with the reblogging feature. Sure, copyright violation happens, but this feature makes it easier.

    Since the reblog feature will automatically include a thumbnail of original artwork that may be in a post if it’s the first image, it appears this may be an automatic copyright violation even if fair use allows the use of a written excerpt.

    The reblog feature places my blog title as the title on someone else’s blog post. Even if it says “from x, y, z blog this seems very odd. There is also the issue of the duplicate content and duplicate title affecting Google page rank.

    When I write about another post or blog, I do so in the context of my own article using an appropriate excerpt, not the first section by any means. I don’t title my post with the other blog’s post title. In that way, the reblog feature is of no use. I can see it’s handy if you just want others to take note of a blog, but this needs to be considered in light of all the other questions at hand.

    Then there are the problems that occur when a reblogged post gets reblogged again, including lost links.

    Lastly, it’s not appropriate to tell serious bloggers with high reader counts who are actually enthusiastic WordPress.com proponents that they can just make their posts/blog private if they don’t like the reblogg function. I understand that it’s easy to unintentionally mis-speak when responding to comments, but an apology would be appropriate in this case.

    If WordPress.com would simply offer an opt out function, you could meet the needs of all your users. Thanks very much for your consideration.

    Making it a widget would be better so it could reside in a sidebar.

    What happens if I reblog something and then change my mind and wish I had not reblogged the post?

    I can of course take down the reblogged post, but is there something else going on in the background of WP.com that means it is not really ‘unblogged’?

    Just want to add my votes in favor of the following:

    1. any re-blogged post to be a text summary and link only;
    2. “share” rather than “like”;
    3. provide on dashboard stats for total # of blogs that have shared your posts (both cumulative and by specific post plus the url of those blogs;
    4. provide a widget indicating total # of blogs sharing your posts
    5. this sharing feature should most definitely be made an “opt-in” only (most especially if you insist on archiving the entire post rather than a summary)
    6. perhaps even better than a generalized opt-in or opt-out would be to simply follow the same rules/procedure in regards to commenting on blogs where the Blogger can designate individually whose comments get published on his/her blog by an approval process.

    Interesting idea. I also have a blog on another platform where plagiarism has, from time to time, been a problem. This could actually be a means of reducing – at least – inadvertent plagiarism. It might even discourage the deliberate version.

    About reblogging, opt-out option will be nice.
    I would want WordPress to email me whenever someone “Like” or reblog my posts… I believe every writer will want to protect their writings, even if that’s “only” a blog.

    Seems a good idea. If anyone wants to copy anything from my Blog I won’t be rushing to a law firm. The whole point is to get things out and about.

    And if somebody likes something I’ve written, then I’m fine with it. Happy actually!

    The feature is wonderful for those who wish to use it. That said, I would very much like an opt-out feature. it shouldn’t require I make my site private. I’m not expecting privacy, but means to have a shred of control over my content. I don’t feel that’s too much to ask.

    If this is optional, I think no one has a beef, but if I were to find my intellectual property
    posted anywhere that I did not post it or give permission for it to be posted, I’d be
    mighty unhappy.
