WordPress.org to wordpress.com issues with instructions
-
I am trying to change from self-hosted wordpress blog (through blue host, my self hosted package expired) to wordpress.com blog. When I try to follow the wordpress instructions, it says to go to the ‘tools’ section in the wp admin. I can’t go to wp admin because I get the error this site could not be reached. hermadhope.com’s server DNS address could not be found. I need help transitioning back to wordpress.com
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Howdy –
Are these the instructions you are following? https://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-from-self-hosted-wordpress-to-wordpress-com/view-all/
What is the site URL?

I spoke with BlueHost. The reason I am getting the dns error is because my domain is no longer registered. It is available. I would like to purchase the domain through wordpress. Can you advise how to do this?
Also I have a larger problem now. I accidentally disconnected the jetpack and now when I log in it does not show me “hermadhope.com” as one of my sites. Is there a way to get this back?

Hi there,
If the domain is now visible, you should be able to add it at My Site ->Domains ->Add:
Also I have a larger problem now. I accidentally disconnected the jetpack and now when I log in it does not show me “hermadhope.com” as one of my sites. Is there a way to get this back?
The only way to reconnect that site is to log into the WP-Admin dashboard and reconnect the Jetpack plugin from there. And for that you’ll need your domain to be registered and connected to your Jetpack site.
Why do you still want the Jetpack connection if you’re moving to us? You don’t need Jetpack to migrate your content from that site, but you do need access to the dashboard. So, 1) register your domain and point it back to Bluehost by setting their name servers:
2) Reconnect the domain on Bluehost’s end so you can get to the dashboard.
3) Export your content and import it here.
4) Once you are sure everything has been imported, change the domain’s name servers back to WordPress.com so it’s pointing to your WordPress.com site.

OK so I did end up self hosting again afterall. My domain has been registered again through bluehost. Do I have to pay $13.00 a year to map my domain to wordpress? That is what it appears when I follow the Add a domain steps. I want to ensure this is right, because I am already paying for my domain through blue host. Please advise, thank you

If you re-purchased the domain from Bluehost you’ll need the mapping upgrade to connect it on this end, yes. It looks like you’ve already added that, and the domain is pointing to us, so it’s now showing your site at hermadhope.wordpress.com
But please note what I said in point 1 and 2 above: To export your content from Bluehost you’ll first need to point and connect the domain to them. Only point it to us AFTER you’ve imported all your content over here.
You don’t need to cancel the mapping upgrade while you do this. The domain just needs to be pointed to them while you complete the content transfer process.

Alright so I did not import my content before I changed my name servers. I was getting confused as I thought you were providing those instructions for if I was moving to wordpress.com. But I ended up staying with self-hosted.
How do I transfer my content now that the name servers have already been updated to wordpress?
Also when I choose my site “www.hermadhope.com” from my list of sites, it actually goes to my very old domain that was “hermadhope.wordpress.com” – does this just take time? How long? Or did I do something wrong?
Thank you for any help!! Sorry I was confused earlier and did not follow steps.

I tried following the import content directions from wordpress. I saved a .xml file from blue host, but I get the error “Sorry, there has been an error.
There was a problem with your WordPress import file. It doesn’t seem to be in a valid format.”Would this be because I changed name servers before doing so?

You’ll need to first point the name servers back to Bluehost so that your site with them is back online. Otherwise we won’t be able to import your media files from there.
Once that site is online, go to its WP-Admin dashboard and create a new export file under Tools ->Export.
Import that file to your site here at My Site ->Settings ->Import.
After you get the message that the import completed, wait a few more hours and then check if all the images are in your media library on this end. Once you’re sure everything is here that should be here, you can point the name servers back to us.

Your domain is showing that site, because that’s the site for which you bought the domain mapping upgrade. If you want the domain connected to another site in your account, let me know which one and I can move it for you.

Where did you get the .xml file? From Tools->Export, or somewhere else? Only the file generated under Tools ->Export can be used here, but if you created the file after your domain was disconnected that might also be a factor.
Can you please tell me to which site in your account you are importing?

I followed the instructions to import my content. I got the .xml file to work. I dowloaded the export file from my site http://www.hermadhope.com in the tools section and then I did the import via the settings section for the same website.
I waited awhile, and it changed my site back to my old content that used to be at hermadhope.wordpress.com. I did not want this. I had a custom design and new content since then. I wanted my content to remain the same one hermadhope.com and the design… I just wanted it to show on the wp admin also.
Now what can I do to get it back??? This is very upsetting if the content and design are lost. Do you guys have live chat? It would be so much easier to discuss this real time.

I tried to follow blue host instructions to back up my website. Now when It try to go to wordpress.com, I am getting the error: There was a problem with your WordPress import file. It doesn’t seem to be in a valid format.
I probably should have waited for a response from you but I was in a panic, thinking my website may be lost now.
Do you think this could have anything to do with the fact that my site is connected to http://www.hermadhope.wordpress.com? Remember I used to have just http://www.hermadhope.com on the list of my sites, but I accidentally removed the jetpack plug in , which removed it from my list of sites. That left me with http://www.hermadhope.wordpress.com among a few other options. I connected http://www.hermadhope.com to the http://www.hermadhope.wordpress.com but I maybe should not have connected my domain to this site. The site I wanted was no longer on my list of sites.
Thank you for any help.

I think we might be misunderstanding each other.
You wanted to import your Bluehost site at the domain, hermadhope.com, to your WordPress.com site, hermadhope.wordpress.com, correct?
The only way to do that is to go to hermadhope.com/wp-admin and export the .xml file under Tools ->Export, and then import it here at My Site ->Settings ->Import
https://wordpress.com/settings/import/hermadhope.wordpress.com
However, I don’t see any recent imports on hermadhope.wordpress.com. To which site did you import the file?
I had a custom design
There is no way to use your custom design on WordPress.com. If you import that content to a WordPress.com site, you’ll need to choose one of the existing themes under My Site ->Themes for that site.
Do you think this could have anything to do with the fact that my site is connected to http://www.hermadhope.wordpress.com? Remember I used to have just http://www.hermadhope.com on the list of my sites, but I accidentally removed the jetpack plug in , which removed it from my list of sites.
This is not related, no. That site is no longer connected via Jetpack, but your domain is pointing to Bluehost, so you should be able to access that site’s dashboard at https://hermadhope.com/wp-admin and import it here. The fact that you already have the mapping on this side does not matter, as the domain is not pointing to us, but to Bluehost.
