Export / Import Users

Add topic to favorites
Hi, My client at https://pieceofmindful.com/ wants me to re-theme his site and I figured the least disruptive way to accomplish this would be for me to create a duplicate site at https://pieceofmindfultest.wordpress.com and do the re-theme there then export back to him. Trouble is, his export to me doesn’t contain any author data. Is there a better way to accomplish what we want to do? Or can you help with author export/import? Thanks! – DP

Hi @marketingtypeguy!

The best way to make sure all information is obtained in the export is through the following guide: https://en.support.wordpress.com/export/

Once your client confirms that he exported the author data as well, you will want to import at pieceofmindfultest.wordpress.com/wp-admin. The Admin Dashboard import option will allow you to insert all of the authors. The guide to import can be found here.

Thanks for the reply Tonya. He has assured me he chose “export all” option and this resulted in 9 XML files. So far two have given me this author reassignment message. Do I just keep on trying XML files until I find the one that contains author info?

You’re welcome. :)

If you have the ability to, open up the XML files in a reader. You should be able to search for author data within the files.

Keep importing the files as you have been and when there is author data found, you will be able to map the posts, so long as the authors are WordPress.com users/authors.

No luck Tonya. All of the nine xml files prompted that they would be overwriting authorship and assigning to me. Foo! I think you may have identified the problem though. These users are not registered as wp.com users. Maybe a plugin will do the trick or manually adding these users to beta site.

I’m sorry that didn’t work. I will make a note to check further about the export/import functionality with multiple export files.

Please let me know if adding the authors to the beta site has helped with assigning the posts properly.
