Editing shows as views

Whrn I edit on my (Android) phone in a browser (Firefox), each instance shows as a View in Stats.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

When you edit soothfairy.com on Firefox for Android, your own activity is likely being counted because the browser’s Enhanced Tracking Protection is stripping away the “login cookie” that identifies you as the administrator. To prevent these self-views, you must go to Jetpack > Settings > Traffic and ensure that “Count logged-in page views from” has the Administrator role unchecked. Because Firefox mobile often blocks cross-site scripts by default, you should also tap the Shield icon in your browser’s address bar while viewing your site and toggle the protection OFF specifically for your domain; this allows the Jetpack “ignore” cookie to function properly. If the views persist, it is helpful to log in via the official Jetpack/WordPress app instead of a mobile browser, as the app uses a direct API connection that is far more reliable at filtering out owner activity than a browser with strict privacy settings.

Thanks ffot that – most helpful. Couldn’t find “Count logged-in page views from” in Jetscript though.

    I mean Jetpack 😱

  • Hi @soothfairy

This question is interesting. What you’re seeing is actually expected behavior with Jetpack Stats, especially when editing on a mobile device.

Jetpack counts page loads, and when you’re editing a page (particularly on mobile browsers like Firefox), the editor can trigger multiple background reloads and previews. Each of those loads can show up as a “view” in Stats, even though it’s all coming from the same editing session.

You may see older documentations online about a setting like “Count logged-in page views from…”, but that option no longer exists in Jetpack. Nothing is missing or misconfigured on your site. Jetpack now handles Stats automatically without role-based exclusions.

On Firefox mobile specifically, its built-in tracking protection can sometimes interfere with how Jetpack identifies logged-in activity, which can make this effect more noticeable. That’s why it tends to show up more when editing from that browser.

The good news is this doesn’t affect your site’s performance nor impact visitors or SEO and it won’t meaningfully skew trends over time which is what jetpack stats is designed to show. In other words, Jetpack is working as intended, just being a little extra honest about every page load that happens during editing.

Let us know if you have any other questions or if you’re noticing anything else that’s unusual.

    Warm regards,

    Melven

Thanks for that, staff member Melven. Your full reply is appreciated. But…

You say my question is “interesting” but the behaviour I complain about is “expected… when editing on a mobile device”.

You say, “On Firefox mobile specifically, its built-in tracking protection can sometimes interfere with how Jetpack identifies logged-in activity, which can make this effect more noticeable. That’s why it tends to show up more when editing from that browser.”

You say, “Jetpack is working as intended, just being a little extra honest about every page load that happens during editing.”

It’s unaceptable that this is expected to happen when editing on a phone. I expect better of WordPress.com. Please pull your fingers out and fix this.
