I am trying to register a domain without much success. Whenever I reach the payment stage and try to purchase the domain, I am redirected to the plans page.

A great way to go if you are not interested in WordPress.com Premium is to look into setting up a self-hosted WordPress.org site through a hosting provider such as Bluehost, GoDaddy, or Pressable.
