Promenadeby AudioTheme

Promenade is designed with the professional performer in mind. Whether you’re a musician, band, comedian, or speaker, if you want to highlight your most relevant content and elegantly display your media, Promenade is for you.

Getting Started

After activating Promenade, you can begin setting it up from the Customizer, where you’ll find tools for adding a logo, changing the background, assigning Custom Menus, specifying front-page settings, managing the site-wide audio player, and more.

Detailed instructions for working with Promenade’s unique features are included below. If you run into any issues or have a question, you can find additional help by:

Your site’s title and tagline will be displayed in the header area of Marquee by default, but you can easily replace the text with your own logo or custom image in the Customizer:

  1. Go to the Customizer.
  2. Open the Site Identity panel.
  3. Upload a new image in the Logo field.

You may also customize the site title and tagline text in this section, or hide them to display the logo by itself.

Homepage Setup

Your homepage is typically one of the first pages most visitors see when browsing your site. While it shows a list of your latest posts by default, Promenade includes various options that allow you to customize the layout and information displayed in order to highlight your most relevant content.

Read the instructions for Setting up a Static Front Page if you’d prefer to use a Page for your homepage. You’ll also want to create a page for displaying your latest posts — see the Blog section below.

Hero Image

Promenade: Featured Image

When using a static front page, the Featured Image for the page set as the front page is displayed as a large banner just below the site header.

We suggest making it extremely wide and relatively short for the best fit (the image in the Promenade demo is 1600x540). Large images tend to take more time to download, so be sure to compress the image as much as possible without losing too much quality.

Audio Player

Highlighting a few choice tracks is possible with the custom player on Promenade’s homepage. To use this feature, you will need the WordPress.com Premium or Business plan.

Here’s how to enable the audio player:

  1. Go to the Customizer.
  2. Open the Theme Options panel.
  3. Click the Edit Playlist button under the “Player Attachment IDs” heading.
  4. Select previously uploaded audio MP3 files or upload new files.
  5. Click the Add to audio playlist button.
  6. Click the Update audio playlist button.

This will add the Attachment IDs for each audio file to the Customizer setting. You should now see an audio player similar to the one shown in the theme demo.

A neat feature that isn’t shown in the demo is the ability to showcase up to four posts or pages using the Featured Content tag.

Promenade: Featured Content

To enable Featured Content:

  1. Go to the Customizer.
  2. Click the Featured Content section to expand it.
  3. Enter a tag name in the Tag Name field.
  4. Click the Save button.
  5. Edit a post or page and assign it the Featured Content tag you set in step 3 to feature that post or page.

The first article in the Featured Content area will appear larger than the others and will display the post’s Featured Image if one is set (make it at least 550x550).

An excerpt will also be displayed for the first article, so use the excerpt field when editing a post if you would like to insert HTML. If you want to show a button, add a class to a link like this:

<a class="button" href="https://www.apple.com/itunes/">iTunes</a>

The Featured Content area will work with or without a static front page.

Blog

When using a static front page, you’ll also want to be sure to create a page for your posts. If you haven’t already done so:

  1. Create a new page for your posts
  2. Give the page a title (“Blog” or “News” work well)
  3. Click the Publish button to create and save the page
  4. Go to Settings → Reading
  5. Select the page you just created in the Posts Page dropdown
  6. Click the Save Changes button

Now when visiting that page on your site, it will display a list of your latest posts. Be sure to add it to your Primary Menu so your visitors can easily find it.

Records

Promenade includes a special functionality that allows you to add records to your site and display them in a visually appealing grid. Here’s how they look in the demo.

To begin adding your records, you first need to set up the Record Archive:

  1. Create a new page.
  2. Give the page a title (we used “Music” in the demo).
  3. Find the Page Options box and select the “Record Archive” option in the Template field.
  4. Click the Publish button to create and save the page.

You can optionally enter a short introduction in the main content editor. Now that your archive is set up, you can start adding records:

  1. Create a new page.
  2. Enter the title of the record.
  3. Set the record’s cover art as the Featured Image.
  4. Change the Published date to the date the record was released.
  5. Find the Page Options box and change the Parent to the page you created as the Record Archive (this is important).
  6. Click the Publish button to create and save the page.

Now when you visit your Record Archive page, you should see your first record listed. Continue adding records by following the same steps (always be sure to set the “Parent” page as the Record Archive page).

You may have noticed that your record pages are looking pretty bare. You can insert a Playlist in the editor for each record to list its tracks and allow your visitors to preview your music. (You will need the Space Upgrade to use this feature). You can also enter additional details about your record, such as a description or links to reviews.

Single Record Navigation

promenade-single-record-navigation

Previous and next record navigation links can be shown on single record pages. Record pages are sorted by menu order, which means adjacent page links won’t show unless the page order is set to something other than 0 for each child page; only the child pages of the parent archive page need to have a sort order.

Videos

Promenade includes a special functionality that allows you to add videos to your site and display them in a visually appealing grid. Here’s how they look in the demo.

Before adding your videos, you need to set up a Video Archive page:

  1. Create a new page.
  2. Give the page a title (we used “Videos” in the demo).
  3. Select the “Video Archive” option as the Template.
  4. Click the Publish button to create and save the page.

You can also enter a short introduction in the main content area of the page. Now that your archive is set up, you can start adding videos:

  1. Create a new page.
  2. Enter the title of the video.
  3. Enter a URL to the video from a supported service in the main content editor.
  4. Set a screenshot of the video as the Featured Image. Video thumbnails are displayed in a 16:9 aspect ratio and will be cropped from the top down.
  5. Change the Parent to the page you created as the Video Archive — this is important.
  6. Click the Publish button to create and save the page.

Now when you visit your Video Archive page, you should see your first video listed. Continue adding videos by following the same steps; always be sure to set the Parent page as the Video Archive page.

Photos

Create a new page for your photos and insert a Gallery to display them.

Custom Menus provide granular control over the links that appear in the various navigation areas on your site. Promenade supports two menu locations: the Primary Menu navigation and the Social Menu (the social icons in the footer of the demo).

You can create and assign menus by going to Appearance → Menus.

social-menu

The Social Menu allows you to display links to your social media profiles, like Twitter and Facebook, as icons. Each menu item should be added as a Custom Link. Promenade will automagically display the correct icon based on the link URL. For example, a link like http://twitter.com/audiotheme will display a Twitter icon because the theme has detected it is a Twitter URL.

The following icons are bundled in Promenade for use in your Social Menu: CodePen, Dribbble, Facebook, Feed, Flickr, GitHub, Google+, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Tumblr, Twitter, Vimeo, WordPress, YouTube.

Widgets

Promenade features two widget areas: a Main Sidebar and a Footer widget area. Read more about managing widgets in the documenation on using Widgets & Sidebars.

Main Sidebar

The Main Sidebar appears on the right side of posts and any pages using the default page template.

The Footer widget area is located at the bottom of every page on the site, just above the credits – or the Social Menu if it’s been enabled. Any widgets added to this area will display in a three-column grid.

Page Features & Templates

Pages can be assigned a Featured Image to display as a banner image just below the site header, similar to the Hero Image on the homepage.

While the homepage Hero Image can be any height, single posts and pages limit the height of the hero image to 540px; anything taller will be cropped. We suggest making your images wide and relatively short for the best fit (the image in the Promenade demo is 1600×540). Large images tend to take longer to download, so be sure to compress the image as much as possible without losing too much quality.

Full-width Template

To remove the sidebar form a particular page, assign it the Full Width page template.

  1. Create a new page or edit an existing page
  2. Find the Page Attributes box and select the “Full Width” option in the Template field

Other Options

Custom Background

To customize the background color — the default is white — go to Customize → Colors & Background and either choose your own color or upload a background image. The background should be a light color or light-patterned image to make sure the dark text will still be visible.

Read more about customizing your background.
