Setting Up the Home Page Template

WordPress.com Customizing Static Front Page

  1. Create a Page, preferably titled “Home.”
  2. Set the Home Page template within the Page Attributes.
  3. Navigate to Appearance → Customize → Static Front Page within the Dashboard.
  4. Choose the option to display a static page for the Front page.
  5. Select your newly created “Home” page from the Front page drop down list. Note: The Posts page will display your posts in the blog format.
  6. Click Save & Publish.

You can manage the featured slideshow on the Home Page template by following the instructions below. Additional options for displaying a featured page of your choice beneath the slideshow are available within the Appearance → Theme Options settings.

Setting Up the Home Page Featured Slideshow

This only applies to the featured slideshow on the Home Page template. Instructions for using the Slideshow Page template are provided below.

  1. Create a Post.
  2. Set a Featured Image for the Post.
  3. Add a Category to the Post (e.g. Featured).
  4. Publish or Update the post.
  5. Choose the Slideshow Category within the Appearance → Theme Options settings. Note: The instructions from this step are referring to the WP Admin dashboard. You can get to this dashboard by adding /wp-admin to the end of your site’s url (e.g.: example.wordpress.com/wp-admin)
  6. Click the blue Save Changes button at the bottom.

Setting Up the Slideshow Page Template

Creating the page:

  1. Create a Page.
  2. Set the Slideshow Page Template within the Page Attributes.
  3. Publish or Update the page.

Adding slideshow images:

Note: The instructions from this step are referring to the WP Admin dashboard. You can get to this dashboard by adding /wp-admin to the end of your site’s url (e.g.: example.wordpress.com/wp-admin)

  1. Within the page editor, click the Add Media button.
  2. Upload your images in the Media Library by dragging them into the window, or selecting the Upload tab.
  3. Do NOT click the Insert into page button. Instead, close the Media Library window. Note: The images will automatically be added to the slideshow after uploading them to the page.
  4. Publish or Update the page.

  1. Within the page editor, click the Add Media button.
  2. Within the Media Library tab, select Uploaded to this page from the drop down menu.
  3. Click and drag the images into your desired order. Order is displayed from left to right.
  4. Close the Media Library window after making your changes.
  5. Publish or Update the page.

Delete slideshow images:

  1. Follow steps 1 and 2 from the “Arrange” instructions.
  2. Select the image you wish to delete.
  3. Click Delete Permanently from the Attachment Details menu.
  4. Publish or Update the page.

Setting Up A Portfolio

Note: The instructions from this step are referring to the WP Admin dashboard. You can get to this dashboard by adding /wp-admin to the end of your site’s url (e.g.: example.wordpress.com/wp-admin)

A portfolio page can be created using 2 methods, by adding a Category to the Custom Menu or using the Portfolio Page Template.

Using Categories:

Note: This option allows you to create as many portfolios as desired.

  1. Create a Post.
  2. Set a Featured Image for the post.
  3. Add a Category to the Post (e.g. Landscapes).
  4. Publish or Update the post.
  5. Repeat process as necessary.
  6. Add the assigned category to the Custom Menu.

Using the Portfolio Page Template:

  1. Follow steps 1-5 above.
  2. Create a Page.
  3. Set the Portfolio Page template within the Page Attributes module.
  4. Choose the Portfolio Page category in the Appearance → Theme Options → Portfolio Options settings.
  5. Click the blue Save Changes button at the bottom.

Note: You may choose the column layout and select if the content is displayed within the Appearance → Theme Options → Portfolio Options settings.

Quick Specs (all measurements in pixels):

  1. The main column width on is 900 for the Full-Width template and posts/pages without sidebars, and 599 for posts/pages with sidebars.
  2. Recommended Featured Image sizes for posts are 900 wide and up to 900 high.
  3. Recommended Featured Image sizes for pages are 980 wide and up to 640 high.
