Getting Started

After activating Nowell, you can jump in and start customizing your theme right away by going to Appearance → Customize. You’ll find options for adding a logo, changing the background, assigning Custom Menus, front-page settings, and featured content.

Detailed instructions for working with the theme’s unique features are included below, but if you run into any issues or have a question, you can find more help in the following places:

Your site’s title will be displayed in the main sidebar area of Nowell by default, but you can easily replace this text with your own logo or custom image in the Customizer.

Homepage Setup

Your homepage is typically one of the first pages most visitors see when browsing your site. While it shows a list of your latest posts by default, Nowell lets you customize the layout and information displayed, to highlight your most relevant content.

You can set up a static front page if you’d prefer to use a Page for your homepage, with a separate blog section.

Hero Image

When using a static front page, the Featured Image for the front page is displayed as a large image above the page content.

For the best fit, we recommend making featured images at least 885x500. Images will be resized down to fit the 885px width and cropped from the top down to 500px high. Large images tend to take more time to download, so be sure to compress the image as much as possible without losing too much quality.

Hero Slider / Featured Content

A neat feature shown in the demo is the ability to showcase up to five posts or pages using the Featured Content tag.

Nowell - Featured Content Slider

To enable Featured Content:

  1. Go to Appearance → Customize
  2. Click the Featured Content section to expand it
  3. Enter a tag name in the “Tag Name” field
  4. Click the Save button
  5. Edit a post or page and assign it the Featured Content tag you set in step 3 to feature that post or page

Each article in the Featured Content area will appear as a large slide in the hero slider. The post’s Featured Image will display as the background image, as long as it’s at least 885x500px.

The title and custom excerpt will also be displayed for each article, so use the excerpt field when editing a post if you would like to insert HTML.

The Featured Content area will work with or without a static front page.

Custom Menus provide granular control over the links that appear in the various navigation areas on your site. Nowell supports two menu locations: the Primary Menu navigation and the Social Links Menu, which displays social icons in the main sidebar.

You can create and assign menus by going to Appearance → Menus.

Nowell - Social Links

The Social Menu allows you to display links to your social media profiles, like Twitter and Facebook, as icons. Each menu item should be added as a Custom Link. Nowell will automagically display the correct icon based on the link URL. For example, a link like will display a Twitter icon because the theme has detected it is a Twitter URL.

The following icons are bundled in Nowell for use in your Social Menu: CodePen, Digg, Dribbble, Dropbox, Facebook, Feed, Flickr, GitHub, Google+, Instagram, LinkedIn, Path, Pinterest, Pocket, Polldaddy, Reddit, Skype, Spotify, Stumbleupon, Tumblr, Twitch, Twitter, Vimeo, WordPress, and YouTube.

Nowell features three widget areas: a Main Sidebar, Content Sidebar, and Home Widget area.

Main Sidebar

The Main Sidebar appears on the left or right side of all pages, depending upon your theme settings. The demo site uses this sidebar area to display a few navigation links using the Custom Menu widget.

Content Sidebar

The Content Sidebar appears on the opposite side of the the main sidebar for posts and any pages using the default page template. The theme demo uses this area to display some example content using Text and Gallery widgets.

Home Widget Area

The Home widget area is located at the bottom of front page, just above the credits. Any widgets added to this area will display in a three-column grid on the front page. This widget area area will work with or without a static front page.

Nowell - Featured Images

Pages can be assigned a Featured Image to display as a large image just above the site content, similar to the Hero Image/Slider on the homepage.

For the best fit, we recommend making the featured images at least 885x500. Images will be resized down to fit the 885px width and cropped from the top down to 500px high.

On single posts or pages, a featured image can display a caption and description over the top of the image, which you can add by editing the image’s settings.

Page Templates

Full-width Template

To remove the Content Sidebar from a particular page, assign it the Full Width page template.

  1. Create a new page or edit an existing page
  2. Find the Page Attributes box and select the “Full Width” option in the Template field

Other Options

Custom Background

To customize the background — the default is a light gray — go to Appearance → Customize -> Colors and either choose your own color or upload a background image. The background should be a light color or light-patterned image to make sure the dark text will still be visible.

Read more about customizing your background.

Nowell offers additional appearance settings which can be found in the Theme section of the Customizer.

Site Layout Display

The site layout setting allows the main sidebar area to be displayed to the left or right of the site content. By default, the main sidebar is to the left of the site content.

Archive Content View

The archive content view setting offers more control over how the archive type pages of your site appear. By default, the archive page will show in a list view, where excerpts and content are hidden. If a post has a custom excerpt set, it will always be displayed.

The “Full Text” option will display the post content in full. The post content can still be minimized by using the WordPress more tag.

The “Summary” setting will display an excerpt of the content. By default, WordPress will create an excerpt from the post content. Alternatively, a custom excerpt can be created.

Full Width Background Image

The full width background image setting will attempt to make the background image responsive and fill the browser window.
