Create the Featured Content Carousel
Lenscap uses Featured Content to showcase four of your latest featured posts in a beautiful post carousel on the homepage.
- To activate Featured Content, click the Customize link in your dashboard to open up the Customizer. From here, click the Featured Content panel at the bottom of the Customizer to begin setting up the header.
- In the Tag name field, enter a tag or choose an existing tag to use as the Featured Content tag. The tag you choose here will be used to display posts from that tag in the Featured Content carousel on the homepage. If you already have posts with the chosen tag, you will see the Featured Content area appear near the header on the homepage. Otherwise, consider adding a few posts using this tag before customizing the carousel to better preview your site’s appearance.
- After you’ve selected a tag and can see the Featured Content area, you can continue customizing the carousel with the settings found in Theme Options → Featured Content Settings. Head to the Customizer section below to learn about the settings available for the carousel.
The recommended image width for the Featured Content carousel is 1200-1500px. Because the height of the featured content area is percentage based, your image will be scaled proportionally to fit the container.
Create the Footer Category Menu
With the Footer Category Menu, you can turn a standard category menu into an instant post-loading category browser. By default, Lenscap uses your most popular categories to create a menu for visitors to browse, but you can override this with your own category menu using the instructions below.
- First, you’ll need to create a menu to populate the category menu. Click Menus in your dashboard and create a new menu and assign it to the Footer Category Menu location.
- Now you can start adding menu items. Using the Category tab, add categories that you’d like to populate your menu with. Posts from these categories will be shown when the reader clicks the category link.
- Once your menu is complete, save the menu and check out the Footer Category Menu on the homepage.
Please note that the category menu is meant for categories. Adding page links or custom URLs to the menu will work, but the category menu area will not display or function as seen in the demo.
Using the Customizer
Lenscap comes with several Customizer settings that you can use to tailor your site to your style.
The following settings can be found by clicking Customize in your dashboard and then going to Theme Options → General Settings.
- Index Post Style: We’ve included two different styles for your blog. Choose between a Magazine Style (featuring a thumbnail and an excerpt) or a Blog Style (full-post layout as you see on single posts).
- Footer Category Menu: The Footer Category Menu is a section near the bottom of the page that lets site visitors browse posts via a category menu. Enable or disable the Footer Category Menu that appears below the posts on your homepage.
- Footer Category Menu Title: Change the title of the Featured Category Menu section at the bottom of the homepage. Leave the title blank if you’d rather not have one.
Featured Content Settings
The following settings can be found by clicking Customize in your dashboard and then going to Theme Options → Featured Content Settings. Visit the Featured Content Carousel section to learn how to set it up.
- Featured Content Layout Style: Choose between a full-width header layout or a boxed layout. Full-width will stretch your header to the edge of the screen and boxed will contain your header to the width of the content on the site.
- Featured Content Archive Link Text: Change the title of the Featured Content area. This text will also link to the Featured Content post archive.
- Featured Content Text Position: Choose left or right positioning for the Featured Content post text.
- Featured Content Excerpt Length: Change the length of the excerpt for the Featured Content post text.
- Featured Content Image Opacity: Change the opacity of the Featured Content background image.
- Featured Content Background Image Blur: Add a blur effect to the Featured Content background image.
- Featured Content Height: Change the height of the Featured Content header.
- Featured Content Text Width: Change the width of the Featured Content post text area.
Lenscap has four different menus that can be used throughout the theme. See the diagram above for a visual tour of the menus and find the menu details below.
- Header Menu — Main menu found in the header of your site.
- Footer Category Menu — Category browser menu found on the homepage, outlined in the Footer Category Menu section.
- Footer Bottom Menu — Menu found at the very bottom of your site, on the left side of the footer.
- Social Menu — Social-media icon menu found in the header of your site. See the instructions below to set up the Social Icon Menu.
- To add a social icon menu, in your dashboard go to Menus.
- Click to add a new menu item and then click the Link tab.
- Add the URL for each of your social profiles and a label for the link. Lenscap will detect which site you are linking to and display a matching graphic.
- Now that you have the menu created, you need to assign it to the Social Menu menu location.
- Save the menu when finished.

If there is a popular service that isn’t supported and has an icon on FontAwesome, let us know and we’ll add it to the theme!
Lenscap comes with two widget areas you can use to customize your site.
- Sidebar — This widget area can be found on the right side of every post and page. This sidebar does not appear on the Full Width page template.
- Footer — This widget area can be found in the footer of your site. There are four widget columns that you can use to add widgets to the footer. The footer widget columns have a dynamic width, meaning if you only choose to use two or three columns, the column width will adjust to display the columns evenly in the footer.
Create a Gallery or Video Post
Lenscap includes support for Gallery and Video Post Formats. Post formats allow you to change the style of your content to more closely match the content of the post you’re creating. Lenscap adds a lightbox effect to Video and Gallery Post Formats that allows visitors to get a quick, full-screen view of media on index pages, while featuring the media at the top of the post on single pages.
Gallery and Video Post Formats will look for embedded galleries or videos in your posts. See here for a list of supported video types. Lenscap will take the first video or gallery in your post to create a lightbox for the index page and it will feature the video or gallery on the full-post-view page.
Create a Video Format Post
- In your dashboard, click Add on the Blog Posts menu item to create a new post.
- In the Post Format panel, select Video.
- Next, let’s add a video. In the same way you embed videos normally, add your embed code or link to the top of your new post. Here are the available video embeds available on WordPress.com.
- After you’ve added your video to the top of your post, you can continue adding content to your post.
- Preview the result when you’re finished and publish your post when you’re ready.

Create a Gallery Format Post
- In your dashboard, click Add on the Blog Posts menu item to create a new post.
- In the Post Format panel, select Gallery.
- Next, let’s add a gallery. In the same way you create galleries normally, add your gallery to the top of your new post. After you’ve added your gallery to the top of your post, you can continue adding content to your post.
- Preview your post, and publish as soon as you’re done editing.

Create the Contributors Page
Lenscap comes with a page template to display all your site’s contributors. This is handy if you have several contributors and you’d like a quick way for users to access their posts.
- In your dashboard, click Add on the Pages menu item to create a new page.
- Apply the Contributors page template in the Page Attributes menu.
- You may add content to the page via the post editor which the theme will display above the contributors list. You won’t see the contributors listed in the post editor, but they will appear on the Contributors page below the page title and page content.
- Contributors must have published posts before they will appear on the Contributors page. Lenscap will grab the author avatar, display name, and bio from the contributor’s Gravatar profile. If this information is missing for your authors, make sure they have all of their details added to their Gravatar profile.
- Publish the page when you’ve finished adding content.
