Welcome to the theme documentation of Dynamic News. These instructions explain how to setup the Magazine Front Page template, configure the theme options and adding social icons to the theme.
Default look upon theme activation
By default, Dynamic News displays your latest posts in a traditional blog format. This means that the theme will look like a regular blog upon activation.
Set up Magazine Front Page Template
If you’d like to have a magazine-style layout like the demo site, follow these detailed instructions:
Create a new static page
Go to Pages → Add New to create a new static page, or edit an existing page.
Assign your selected page to the Magazine Front Page template from the Page Attributes box.
Set Magazine Front Page Template as Front Page
If you want to use the Magazine Front Page as your homepage, go to Settings → Reading and set “Front page displays” to “A static page”. From the dropdown menu, select the homepage you created earlier. You can learn more about setting up a front page here.
Add Category Posts Widgets
After you created your Magazine Front Page homepage, go to Appearance → Widgets and set up your Magazine Front Page widget area.
Dynamic News comes with three different Category Posts widgets geared to creating a magazine-style site, but you can also add any other widget you like.
Featured Images: Dynamic News uses featured images as thumbnails on all three Category Posts widgets.
Category Posts Columns
This widget displays the latest eight blog posts from two configured categories: Category Left and Category Right. The first post of each category is displayed with the excerpt, followed by three further posts in small boxes.
Category Posts Boxed
This widget displays the latest four blog posts from a configured category in a boxed layout, like in the screenshot below. The latest post is highlighted on the left column and displayed with the excerpt, and the right column displays three additional posts.
Category Posts Grid
This widget creates a two-column grid layout, showing the latest blog posts from a category you select. You can also specify the number of posts to be displayed.

Featured Posts Slideshow
The Magazine Front Page Template supports a beautiful Featured Posts Slider which displays the latest posts with a tag you’ve configured. To set up the slider, go to Appearance → Customize, and add a tag under Tag Name in the Featured Content section. The slideshow will then display all posts which are tagged with that keyword.
Next, activate the slider on the Magazine Front Page template by checking the box in the Customizer, in the Theme section.
Use Featured Images
Dynamic News makes heavy use of featured images as thumbnails on the Magazine Front Page template. The Featured Posts Slider and all Category Posts widgets will look as intended when your posts have featured images.
WordPress.com will generate all required image sizes automatically when you upload an image. Your uploaded images should have a minimum image size of 880×290 pixels in order to look good at any screen size. The slider will show a grey image placeholder in case you haven’t set a featured image.
You can learn how to set featured images for posts on the Featured Images support page.
Configure Theme Options
You can configure some basic theme options under Appearance → Customize, including some settings specific to Dynamic News.
- Custom Logo Upload
Your uploaded logo image will replace the default site title.
- Layout Settings
You can choose between a wide or boxed layout width and between a default left or right sidebar.
- Header Content
Add a header text line and turn on/off the header social icons and header search field.
- Post Settings
Allows you to choose between displaying full posts and post excerpts and lets you decide where featured images should be displayed.
- Featured Posts Slider
Activate the slideshow, set the timeout between slides in milliseconds and select fade or horizontal animation.
Social icons are easy to add with Dynamic News. Create a new custom menu called « Social Icons » on Appearance → Menus and add custom Links to all your favorite social network websites. Next, assign your social menu to the Social Icons location in the theme.
The theme will automatically detect the URLs of your menu links and show the appropriate icon using Genericons, supporting all social icons that are part of this icon font. If you add a link to an unsupported website a default icon will be used.
You can display Social Icons in your header area through the Theme Customizer, by heading to the Theme section and checking off « Display Social Icons on header area. » You can also use the Social Icons Widget to display your social icons.
