Demand Customizer Options

After activating Demand, you can customize the theme under My Sites → Customize, where you’ll find options like changing your background color and background image, uploading a header image, and choosing a custom menu.

Step 1: Creating Required Pages

Demand requires you to create few pages as you set up the theme. In addition, Demand allows a Portfolio page and a Slideshow page, which are covered below.

Creating the Homepage Template

Demand customizerThe Homepage template displays your theme’s main page. Check out the demo’s homepage.

  1. Go to Pages → Add New. Title the page whatever you would like; in our demo sample, we’ve titled the page “Home.”
  2. Under Page Attributes, within the Template dropdown, select the “Home” template.
  3. Click Update to save changes.
  4. Navigate to My Sites → Customize and select Static Front Page to expand the options.
  5. Set your Front page displays option to A static page, and select your new “Home” page that you created.
  6. Click Save & Publish on the Customizer options page to complete the setup.

Creating the Blog Page

The blog page displays all posts within your theme, as you can see on the demo. Here’s how to set up your blog page.

Creating a Portfolio Page

The Portfolio page displays your Portfolio projects from the Portfolio post type, in a four-column layout. See the demo and learn how to set up Portfolio projects.

Creating the Slideshow Page

The Slideshow page will display images added to your page in a Carousel format. See the demo for our sample Slideshow page. Here’s how to set up your Slideshow page:

  1. Go to Pages → Add New. Title the page whatever you would like to use for your “Slideshow” page on your site. On the demo, we’ve titled the page “Slideshow.”
  2. Under Page Attributes, within the Template dropdown, select the “Slideshow” template.
  3. Click Add Media to add your slideshow images.
  4. Add your images within the Media Uploader. Any image that is attached to the page will display within the slideshow (Note: You do not need to click Insert into post).
  5. Click Publish/Update to save changes.

Step 2: Adding Posts

Let’s walk through how to add posts and the different options available:

  1. Create a new post.
  2. Add a title for your post. Add your post content within the post editor.
  3. Ensure that you select a post format.
  4. Set a category for your post.
  5. Add a Featured Image for your post. These featured images will be resized to fit the space; however, we recommend 1170 x 545 pixels.
  6. Click Publish to save changes.

Using Post Formats

After creating a new post you may choose a Post Format: Standard, Video, or Image. Depending on your choice, your post will display differently.

1. Standard Post Format: If you choose Standard, your post will display in a standard two-column format; see demo here. Here is a screenshot sample of the Standard post format:

2. Video Post Format: If you choose Video, your post will display an embedded video above your two-column post; see demo here. To embed a video for your post:

  1. Copy your Vimeo or YouTube link from your browser.
  2. Paste the URL into the standard post editor entry box.
  3. Demand will do the rest and take that URL and embed the video above your post.
  4. Click Update or Publish to save.

3. Image Post Format: If you choose Image, your post will display with your Featured Image above the standard two-column format; see demo here. Here is a screenshot sample of the Image post format:

Step 3: Adding Portfolio Projects

Let’s walk through how to add Portfolio projects to the theme:

Adding Projects

  1. In your site’s dashboard, go to Settings → Writing → Your Custom Content Types and make sure the “Portfolio Projects” option is checked.
  2. Create a new Project post within the Portfolio tab in the left sidebar of the dashboard.
  3. Add a title for your Projects. Add your project content within the post editor.
  4. Ensure that you select a post format for your Project (see step 2 above and the explanations on post formats, which apply to your Project posts as well).
  5. Set a category for your project post.
  6. Add a Featured Image for your post. These featured images will be resized to fit the space, but we recommend 1170 x 545 pixels.
  7. Click Publish to save changes.

Creating Tiled Galleries for Projects

  1. See our demo here for a sample. After creating a new Project post, click Add Media.
  2. Click on Create Gallery. Upload your project images.
  3. Click Create a new gallery.
  4. On the following screen, select your Gallery type. On our demo, we are using Tiled Galleries.
  5. Click on Insert gallery.
  6. Save your project by clicking Publish or Update on the post editor page.

 

Step 4: Setting Up Your Homepage

Demand provides several options for homepage content, which are set under My Sites → Customize → Theme. You can choose which social media links appear on the homepage in the navigation bar at the top of the page, select which tag is pulled into the Featured Content Carousel, set your homepage category for the two-column post grid, and set your sidebar widgets and use the Demand theme’s custom Recent Post widget.

A. Set up your Featured Content Carousel

  1. Go to My Sites → Customize → Featured Content.
  2. Set your desired tag and all posts with the “featured” tag or a tag of your choice will display within the Featured Content Carousel. (Your theme supports up to 20 posts in its featured content area.)
  3. Go to My Sites → Customize → Theme → Home.
  4. Select your Featured Content Autoplay, which will determine how long each carousel slide stays active before changing.
  5. Click Save & Publish.

Note: You must add a Featured Image to the posts in your Featured Content Carousel tag in order to show images in the home page carousel (the play button overlay will be added by the theme automatically).

B. Set up Social Media Links

  1. Go to My Sites → Customize → Theme → Social.
  2. Enter your social media links for Facebook, Twitter, and your RSS feed, if you wish to use one. If you do not enter in any URLs, these icons will not display.
  3. Click Save & Publish.

C. Set a category of posts for the homepage 2-column posts section

  1. Go to My Sites → Customize → Theme → Home.
  2. Set what category you would like to display within the Homepage Posts Category option.
  3. Click Save & Publish.

D. Setup the Sidebar Widget Area

  1. Go to My Sites → Customize → Widgets.
  2. Expand the Sidebar widget box.
  3. Click on Add a widget.
  4. Add any standard widget, or add the Demand custom Featured Posts widget by scrolling through the list and finding Demand – Featured Posts.
  5. Click on the widget to add it.
  6. Set your options for Title, Category to display, and Count/Number of Posts to display.
  7. Click Save & Publish.

Demand also lets you set a Parent Category for the boxes below the homepage sliding carousel – see image above. To display this:

  1. Go to My Sites → Customize → Theme → Home.
  2. Choose a Parent Category for the Featured Category List option dropdown menu.
  3. Remember that the theme will only display Child Categories from the chosen Parent Category.
  4. Click Save & Publish.

Custom Header

Demand supports Custom Backgrounds. This background will appear behind your site’s content.


Sidebar

Demand has one right sidebar widget area. Go to Appearance → Widgets to set up your desired sidebar widgets. These widgets will display on the homepage, blog page, and single post page sidebar. See the demo. See Step 4: D above for details regarding the Demand Featured Posts widget.

Demand also has a full-width page template, which can be used to display a page without a sidebar. See an example on the demo.
