In Ireland, on May 22nd 2015, there was a referendum held on a proposal to include the following words in the Irish Constitution: ‘Marriage may be contracted in accordance with law by two persons without distinction as to their sex.’ 62.4% of the turnout voted in favour of the amendment and so Ireland became the first country in the world to bring in same-sex marriage by way of public vote. 142 more words
