Been given hell over the last couple of days regarding the five per cent pay rise given us councillors by the Renumeration Authority.Even while watching rugby out in the “suburbs” of Gladstone this afternoon there were a few wisecracks from the sidelines about the “bulging wallet” and “How nice it is to see you rich buggers mingling with the poor.”Now I know there are no MM readers out there who would begrudge your hard working representatives an extra bob or two but honestly the extent of the pay rise surprised-and embarrassed- us more than anyone. As I said at the meeting any of us who hold down a “normal job” as well would have been dancing in the streets had our bosses lifted our wages by that much in one go.And other councillors said pretty much the same thing.I should add, however, that I do see justification in the increase for our Mayor. She has a hectic schedule day in, day out and deserves everything she gets, and more.
