Hightop Mountain - AT/Shenandoah National Park (08/04/13)

Directions to Hightop Mountain:  http://www.summitpost.org/hightop/153448

With so many mountains to climb in Shenandoah National Park, Hightop Mountain often gets lost in the shuffle.  It’s summit views are not the best, with some obstruction from the nearby foliage.   128 more words

Stony Man Mountain - AT/Shenandoah National Park (06/17/13)

Directions to Stony Man Mountain:  http://www.summitpost.org/stony-man/151574

This is my favorite hike in all of Shenandoah National Park, which is really saying something.  I know I’m “supposed” to say Old Rag, but Stony Man has views just as breathtaking without requiring the day-long commitment to hike it.   142 more words

Hawksbill Mountain - Shenandoah National Park (05/12/13)

Directions to Hawksbill Mountain:  http://www.summitpost.org/hawksbill/151584

Hawksbill is the tallest mountain in Shenandoah National Park.  It offers a 360 degree observation platform and a shelter at the summit, the latter a rarity in SNP (if I remember correctly, it’s only a day-use shelter though).   108 more words

Cold Mountain - AT/Blue Ridge Parkway (05/27/13)

Directions to Cold Mountain (sometimes also referred to as Cole Mountain):  http://www.hikingupward.com/GWNF/ColdMountain

This might be my favorite hike along the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia.  Even more so than Humpback Rocks and Spy Rock, the other two top contenders – because it’s a more gentle climb than those two, and you have views for the whole ridge walk, rather than one stunning viewpoint at the top.   46 more words

Cedar Run - Shenandoah National Park (11/03/12)

Directions to Cedar Run Falls Trail:  http://www.summitpost.org/cedar-run-whiteoak-canyon-loop/235512

The link above, like most online sources, presents this as a loop hike with White Oak Canyon.  I’ve done the two separetely as out-and-back hikes, but never completed the loop because, essentially, I’m not a morning person.   158 more words

Blackrock Summit - AT/Shenandoah National Park (09/29/12)

Directions to Blackrock Summit:  http://www.summitpost.org/blackrock/154137

Although the hike to it is short, the Blackrock summit trail is one of the more rewarding hikes in the southern section of SNP.   94 more words
