Tracking & Opt Outs

As part of our commitment to your privacy and security we are transparent about the data we collect about you and how we use that data. Additionally, we offer you the option to opt out of some of our tracking, and to provide tracking opt-out options to your site’s visitors.

Opt Your User Account Out of Tracking

By default, when you create an account on WordPress.com we activate our own analytics tool to gather information about how you use our services. This information helps us improve our products, make marketing to you more relevant, personalize your WordPress.com experience, and more as detailed in our privacy policy. If you’d prefer to disable this tracking, you can do so from the Account Privacy Settings.

EU/UK Marketing Banner

If you visit WordPress.com from within the EU or UK, we display a banner that describes some of our tracking and gives you some granular choices about how your data can be used. Use the toggles within this banner to set your tracking preferences.

US Sale Opt-Outs

If you reside in certain US states, you may have the right to opt out of having your data sold. Automattic does not directly sell personally identifiable information about its users (i.e., for money). However, we sometimes share information with third parties who help us with our advertising, marketing, and analytics (as described in our Privacy Policy). Residents of these states may opt out by clicking the “Do not sell/share my personal information” links found in the footers of our sites.

Additionally, we show ads on some of our users’ sites and some of our own, and the revenue those ads generate lets us offer free access to some of our services so that money doesn’t become an obstacle to having a voice. Our ads program also allows users to earn revenue to support and grow their sites. In some US states, you also have a right to opt out of having your data used for ad personalization. You can learn how to opt out by going to Advertising on WordPress.com Sites and Sites in the WordAds Program

Other Tracking

There is some other tracking on WordPress.com, which it is not currently possible for you or your site’s visitors to opt out of. Most of this tracking is related to data that’s required to provide you and your visitors with our service. For example, for us to provide you with accurate Stats data about visitors to your site and page views, we collect minimal information from each person who visits your site.

You can find detailed descriptions of the data we collect about you, and how we use it, in our privacy policy. You can find similar descriptions of the data we collect about your site’s visitors, and how we use it, in our privacy notice. Lastly, you can find details about the cookies we use on WordPress.com in our cookie policy, which also describes more options for blocking this kind of tracking.
