Frequently Asked Questions

What about sites hosted on other plans?

The information on this page applies to sites on our higher plans that support plugins and third-party themes. Sites on our Starter and Explorer plans do not include these features and instead use a hosting environment optimized for those plans.

Can I access .htaccess?

An .htaccess file applies to websites hosted on an Apache web server. The WordPress.com hosting platform uses NGINX servers so it does not use .htaccess files. If you are using a plugin that requires changes to the .htaccess file, please ensure that it is compatible with our hosting platform.

Can I make changes to the NGINX configuration?

Some plugins and themes may tell you that to function, they need you to make changes to the NGINX configuration. However, this is not possible here at WordPress.com. If a plugin or theme suggests changes, please contact the developers to see if they have any alternative solutions.

Can I make changes to php.ini?

Some plugins and themes may tell you that to function, they need you to make changes to the php.ini file. However, this is not possible here at WordPress.com. If a plugin or theme suggests changes, please contact the developers to see if they have any alternative solutions.

Is multisite supported on WordPress.com?

We don’t currently support multisite on WordPress.com.

WordPress.com plans include an extensive list of features for a single site. You can create multiple sites on WordPress.com and manage each one from a single WordPress.com account. Purchase a plan for each site separately.

For multisite hosting, we recommend Pressable. Just like WordPress.com, Pressable offers free SSL certificates, free staging sites, unlimited bandwidth, free global CDN, and 24/7 expert support.

How can I increase the allowed memory size?

In general, memory exhaustion issues on a site are caused by plugins or themes that aren’t working correctly, not by a lack of memory. To solve memory problems, perform an audit of your plugins and themes by deactivating them individually. After identifying the plugin or theme causing the memory issue, please contact their developer for assistance.

The PHP settings on sites hosted here at WordPress.com cannot be changed as they are globally fixed for all sites. We have a generous memory limit (512 MB — that’s half a gigabyte!)
