Payment Methods

This guide covers how to pay for a WordPress.com plan, domain, and other services we offer.

Methods of Payment

For payment, we accept:

We cannot accept:

Add a Credit Card to Your Account

Add Payment Method form

Adding a payment method to your account is only possible for credit card payments. If you wish to add a new PayPal account for future renewals, you can add PayPal from the subscription’s settings page.

Using a Payment Method for All Subscriptions

Use payment method for all subscriptions checkbox

When adding a new payment method, selecting this checkbox will update all active subscriptions on all sites under your account to also use the payment method. You can change the payment method for any subscription by viewing the subscriptions page.

In addition, it will mark the payment method as a backup for current and future subscriptions, which will be used if the assigned payment method for a subscription fails during renewal. To change the payment method’s backup status, view and manage your payment methods.

Delete a Saved Credit Card

To delete a credit card from your account, go to Purchases → Payment Methods in your profile settings.

Under the Manage Your Credit Cards section, click Delete next to any card to delete it.

Delete a credit card

Note: An up-to-date payment method must be assigned to your purchases to prevent them from expiring.

Manage Payment Methods

To update payment method settings from your account, go to Purchases → Payment Methods in your profile settings.

Under the Manage Your Payment Methods section, click the Use as backup checkbox next to any card to toggle the setting.

Use a payment method as backup

Select Use as backup to mark a payment method as a fallback when the primary payment method fails for any subscription on this account.

Backup Payment Methods

Any payment method on an account can be set to serve as a backup payment method. When a primary payment method on an account fails to renew its associated purchase, the billing system will then try to charge any of the listed backup payment methods on the account until a method succeeds.

Backup payment methods will be used for any purchase listed on the account in the event of a failed renewal.

Once a backup method is successfully used to renew a purchase, the method is then assigned as the primary method for that purchase’s future renewals.

A payment method can be designated as a backup from Purchases → Payment Methods in your Account Settings.

Payments Using a PayPal Account

Purchases on WordPress.com can also be done using a PayPal account. You can connect your PayPal account while making a purchase during checkout or you can add PayPal to an existing subscription from the subscription’s settings page.

Note: Because payments for WordPress.com subscriptions are recurring, you will still need a backup funding source (for example, a verified credit card number or bank account) connected to your PayPal account, even if you have funds in that account.

Using PayPal for New Purchases

If PayPal is available in your area, a “PayPal” option will be shown under the “Pick a payment method” step in Checkout:

Selecting it and clicking the “PayPal” button at the bottom of the screen will redirect you to PayPal to complete your purchase.

Using PayPal for Future Renewals of an Existing Subscription

To use PayPal for upcoming renewals of an existing purchase, visit the purchase’s settings page, by clicking on Upgrades” > “Purchases and selecting the subscription from your list of purchases. From the settings page, you can click “Add Payment Method” or “Change Payment Method” from the links at the bottom of the page:

If PayPal is available in your area, a “PayPal” option will be shown under the “Credit or debit card” fields:

Selecting it and clicking the “PayPal” button at the bottom of the screen will redirect you to PayPal to confirm your account and assign it as your subscription’s payment method. After adding a PayPal account, you will see it listed under the purchase’s “Payment method” field:

There are some countries that PayPal will not accept payments from. If you have a credit or debit card registered to an address in one of those countries, you will be unable to use your PayPal account to pay. In addition, you will be unable to use PayPal if you are paying in any of the following currencies: BRL (Brazilian real), IDR (Indonesian Rupiah), INR (Indian Rupees), or TRY (Turkish Lira).

Payments Using Apple Pay

Purchases on WordPress.com can also be made using Apple Pay, on supported devices. Typically this requires the Safari web browser on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac. You must already have an Apple Pay card available on your device.

If Apple Pay is available in your area and set up for your device, an “Apple Pay” option will be shown under the “Pick a payment method” step in Checkout:

Selecting it and clicking the “Apple Pay” button at the bottom of the screen will open the Apple Pay prompt to complete your purchase:

Payments using Google Pay

Purchases on WordPress.com can be made using Google Pay when visiting the website with the Google Chrome browser. Google Pay will be available if your browser supports it, and if there is at least one card already present in your Google Pay wallet.

If Google Pay is available for your device, a “Google Pay” option will be shown under the “Pick a payment method” step in Checkout:

Local Payment Methods

The following payment methods are available for payments in specific countries:

You will automatically be shown the payment methods available in your region. If a payment option is not visible, it is not available.

Local payment methods can be used for both new purchases and renewals in checkout, but cannot be assigned to a subscription via the “Add/Change Payment Method” form because they cannot be recharged. If you pay with one of these methods, you will need to manually renew that purchase in the future.

These steps require signing into your WordPress.com account. If you don’t remember your password and need to recover your login details to access WordPress.com, please read Account Recovery.
