Infinite Scroll

Infinite Scroll is a feature that loads the next set of posts automatically when visitors approach the bottom of the home page or posts page. It’s designed to help visitors read through many posts without effort.

When you get to the bottom of the page, you’ll see a loading icon display briefly as the next seven posts load below.

Infinite scroll is supported by most themes in the Theme Directory.

When Infinite scroll is enabled, you will see a basic footer containing your blog title, which readers can click to scroll back to the top.

If you are using an Infinite Scroll enabled theme that has active footer widgets, you will see a “Load more posts” below posts instead of Infinite Scroll.

Disabling Infinite Scroll

Our stats show that people read more posts when Infinite Scroll is enabled, so we hope you enjoy it as a feature! However, you can turn it on or off any time by toggling the “Infinite Scroll” option on My Site → Settings → Writing. Additionally, adding a footer widget will also disable the Infinite Scroll option.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Does infinite scroll work on archives and category pages?
  • How does the scroll/click affect pageview stats?
Each time a reader loads more posts, either by scrolling or by clicking the load-more button, it counts as a new pageview in your stats.
  • How many posts load at a time?
Infinite Scroll loads seven posts at a time.
  • Can I change the number of posts that load at a time?
You can’t change the number of posts that load during Infinite Scroll. (The Settings → Writing“Blog posts” → Display blog posts per page” option takes effect when Infinite Scroll is disabled.)
  • Does Infinite Scroll make my site load more slowly?
Nope! Performance has been one of the main concerns when developing Infinite Scroll. (If your site has a ton of images, slideshows, or videos, those things may make loading your site a little slower but that would happen with or without Infinite Scroll.)
  • Can I turn it off?
Yes. Uncheck “Scroll Infinitely” in My Sites → Settings → Writing or add a footer widget.
