Migrate from Twitter’s Now-Defunct Revue Newsletter Platform to WordPress.com Newsletter

On Wednesday, December 14, 2022, Twitter announced it will shut down its Revue newsletter platform, saying

“We’ll cut to the chase: from January 18, 2023, it will no longer be possible to access your Revue account. On that date, Revue will shut down and all data will be deleted.”

Twitter announcement

That news left Revue newsletter owners scrambling to find a replacement platform. We believe we can help.

WordPress.com
Newsletter: the platform
that puts you in control.

Publish. Earn. Grow. No Limits

Did you know that WordPress.com has always had the ability to send newsletters to your subscribers? What you might not know is that we’ve been working hard to make it an even better experience. We’ve taken our already-powerful email newsletter functionality and streamlined it into newsletter-focused themes and block patterns that make setting up a beautiful email newsletter on WordPress.com easier than ever.

With WordPress.com Newsletter, you can:

  • Add unlimited email subscribers
  • Import subscribers from other platforms
  • Launch with a beautiful, ready-made theme, or customize every detail with a myriad of Block Patterns
  • Stylize your newsletter with a background image, site icon, and accent color
  • Schedule email publishing
  • Monetize your site (stay tuned for more paid subscription features)
  • Use a free .blog subdomain or connect a custom domain with one of our paid plans
  • Publish on the go with Post by Email – making writing a newsletter as simple as sending an email

Ready to get started?

If you’ve already got a WordPress.com website that you want to turn into a newsletter, all you need to do is add a Subscribe Block or one of our Newsletter Subscription Patterns to your site, and you’re done. Readers who subscribe by adding their email address will be notified whenever you publish new posts.

If you’re new to WordPress.com or you’d prefer to set up a newsletter that’s separate from an existing WordPress.com site, you can easily set up a second site strictly for your newsletter. It can have its own newsletter theme, and you can use it to only write posts that you want to send out as newsletter emails. Start your new site here.

These choices give you the ultimate control over all of the content you serve to your audience, without having to incur separate costs on different platforms. All of the functionality you already know and love, using WordPress. None of the extra costs.

  • No extra cost? Really?
    • Yes, you can even set up a free WordPress.com site for your newsletter!
  • Okay, but is there an advantage to running my newsletter on a WordPress.com paid plan?
    • Yes, all WordPress.com paid plans make the Premium Content and Payments blocks available, giving you the option to charge for your newsletter content.
  • But what about all those subscribers I already have over on Revue?
    • Don’t worry. As long as you export your subscriber list before Twitter shuts it down completely, you can easily import them into WordPress.com.

Import Revue Newsletter Subscribers to WordPress.com Newsletter

Here’s the process to import subscribers from Revue to WordPress.com.

First, you’ll need to export your Revue data. When you log in to your Revue account, you should see a screen similar to this:

Click the Export my data button. You’ll receive a .zip file containing multiple files. The one you’ll need is called subscribers.csv. This .csv file contains:

  • email: subscriber email address
  • first_name: first name of the subscriber
  • last_name: last name of the subscriber
  • created_at: when was the subscriber created

Now that you have a list of your current Revue subscribers, you can easily import them into your WordPress.com site.

To import subscribers to an existing site, follow these steps:

  1. Starting from your dashboard, click on Users.
  2. Select the Email Subscribers tab.
  3. Click the Add Subscribers button.
  4. Click the uploading a CSV file link to select the exported .csv file from your computer.
  5. Click the Add subscribers button after you have made your selection.

You can also import subscribers during the process of creating your newsletter site. After completing the initial site setup, you will be taken to the Add Subscribers screen. If you run into any issues, our Happiness Engineers are here to help.

That’s it! Continue your newsletter journey on WordPress.com, where connecting with your people is just as easy as writing a post.
