Bio
I have been tying flies since I was 12, starting back in 1964. My first day of fly fishing also included my introduction to Trout - 1938, by Ray Bergman. My initial reaction was to look at the 15 color plates of wet and dry flies, streamers, and bucktails. I was enamored! Not long after that my dad gave my brother and I one lesson and gave us all his fly tying stuff.
This site expresses some of my early influences, infused with what I have learned since 1964 in my years of tying flies and fishing. My Canon G9 Powershot digital compact camera affords creative capability and expression, electronically incorporating my continual growth and progress as a fly tyer and amateur photographer into the web.
I love classic wet flies, though they are not my only fly tying interest.
I have taught fly tying classes and lessons for 28 years.
12 years commercial fly tying experience.
Trout flies primarily, though I also tie some salmon hairwings and drys, steelhead flies, some bass flies such as poppers and underwater patterns, saltwater flies like Deceivers, Clouser Minnows, and a few original striper squid-type patterns. I have also tied some full-dress classic salmon flies, though my work with wet flies though Forgotten Flies has pretty much caused me to focus on tying these historic trout flies.
Published in Fly Fisherman, Fly Tyer, Art of Angling Journal, Fly Fusion, Mid-Atlantic Fly Fishing Guide, Ontario Outdoors, Eastern Fly Fishing.
Featured author of Ray Bergman biography in Forgotten Flies, Complete Sportsman, April 2000.
Lecturer, speaker, author, fly tying classes, fly fishing demonstrations and tactical fishing specialist, especially nymph fishing.
16 seasons experience as Fly Fishing Guide in Pennsylvania.
Author of three fly tying DVD's: Tying Classic Wet Flies (2004), Advanced Classic Wet Flies, and Traditional Streamers and Bucktails, both released in 2007.
This site is a work in progress.
I have two daughters and four grandsons.
