Zero to Hero: Day Eighteen
-
@trentpmcd I don’t think it’s vain or a turn off at all. I have done the same thing because I would like to keep my private and my blogging persona separate. My friends aren’t necessarily interested in what I blog about, but I hope to connect with some people that are by having a Facebook page.
@culturallife usually when I am on Twitter, I tend to share links to other blogs I read and think would be useful to my followers, I also share some quotes that inspire me, and if I see a conversation that’s interesting I usually jump in if I have something to say. I try to promote my own posts less than promoting other people’s posts.
Also, using tools like HootSuite or Buffer can greatly help in managing your social media accounts. You can schedule your messages to go out in advance and not worry about spending entire time on Twitter/Facebook. I don’t automate all of it all the time, but a good majority of it is automated because social media can take up time if you want to use it effectively.

I was very excited to learn today that I can link my facebook page for my blog and my blog!
I was wondering why there isn’t a pinterest widget and also why there isn’t an option to publicize to pinterest? I am a huge pinterest user and I would just love to have a widget in my sidebar that would show some of my latest pins and link viewers to my pinterest account.
If there are such options and I am not understanding how to use them I’d love to know!

I think anamelio’s advice is good.There are positives to social networking but there are negatives too. Always exercise common sense when it comes to which social media sites you are active on and what you post…
Do not auto-post the same snippets and links across multiple social media sites.
If you must auto-post then avoid auto-posting the same snippet and link across multiple social media sites periodically throughout the day. We are all drowning in a sea of duplicated content. Respect your followers knowing each one has a breaking point when they will declare, “There it is again. That’s it. Enough is enough!” and click the unfollow link to shed themselves of followers, who annoy them by sharing the same link to the same content over and over, again and again.
From: 7 Common Sense Social Networking TipsAn autopost is a post you create and schedule to be automatically posted at a specific time. For 3l autoposting tool choices you can make see http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2013/05/28/auto-posting-to-social-media-sites-or-not/

We cannot use JavaScript widgets like the one you ask for provided by Pinterest on WordPress.com blogs for security reasons.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/code/#javascriptYou can capture a Pinterest image and upload it, link to it and display it in a text widget in your sidebar.
For creating links in a text widget see:

NOTE http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/text-widget/#adding-an-imageYou can upload image files by clicking the Add Media button right above the editing area of a page or a post. http://en.support.wordpress.com/add-media/
You can also upload new files to your Media Library using Media → Add New. http://support.wordpress.com/media/media-add-newYou can add a Pinterest sharing button too your posts and pages too. http://en.support.wordpress.com/sharing/#customize-your-services

I havn’t added Facebook, which I do have an account with, due to a few reasons.
I just feel I would like to keep them separate, I don’t feel comfortable having my posts flooding on to my FB page and friends FB page. I sort of feel that I would like to tell a few close friends of my blogging and leave them the option to follow me instead, also I do believe it would become far more time consuming, but it is really due to keeping things separate.
I have however started a Pinterest account, for this particular blog I am still working out what ‘exactly’ I will use Pinterest for other than my favorite recipes. On my blog centered around where I live it is must easier and on this one I have included my Linked in link also.
I used the text widget and it all links well but both buttons are quite far over to the left and I’ve no idea how to move across.
@TimeThief you kindly I think told me how, but I have completely lost the advice as read it on my phone & couldn’t activate, please could you remind me. The blog is livingineastsheen.co.uk – hopefully you will see what i mean

@eclecticoddsnsods
Hi there,
I’m not clear on how to help you. The pinterest button on your widgets page which is collapsed on the Fiore theme works for me http://www.pinterest.com/eclecticoddsnso/ -
@timethief , yes on this blog it’s good but on my livingineastsheen.co.uk it’s too far to the left. I think it’s called simpler theme. It’s my other blog I run alongside and try zerotohero things on too :-)
-
@eclecticoddsnsods you can use the images or buttons you created in an Image widget as well and you can specify the alignment there if you want to display them in the center of the widget. Or you can try adding align=”aligncenter” in the code for the image source, either before or after the width and height.

@eclecticoddsnsods
Sorry I missed that because the URL was not active and I’m visually challenged by annamelio has answered you. If you don’t know how to code the best practice is to create a draft post, upload images, link to them and align the badges/button in the draft post in the Visual editor. Then you switch to the Text HTML editor and copy the code which you paste into the text widget.

Thanks for your advice re: Twitter. :-) I’ll put some more effort into it and see what happens. I like your idea of using Hootsuite etc. because I know (from experience!) how much time can be eaten up by social media. I’ve made a conscious decision to cut down on Facebook use and I don’t miss it at all.

Has anyone used Pinterest, and if so, what do you think are the benefits over other social media? Thanks!

@easygoinmama
I’m totally with you on the social media thing. I’ve missed out on so many birthday parties, barn dances, social gatherings, car shows, bar mitzvah’s, school unveiling’s, tree plantings, job hiring’s, job firing’s, poker games, cluedo nights, babysitting opportunities, swim meets, work outings and out-workings to name but a few just because I don’t Facebook. I did start twitter recently for the purposes of this blog and have had a bit of fun. -
@maraeastern, @anamelio & @ timethief – Thanks for the advice! About autoposting (which I don’t do) across multiple sites: I wouldn’t post the exact same thing in multiple spots. Currently WordPress puts up a link to my posts on facebook & linkedin but not the whole post. Doing that isn’t a problem, is it? Thanks again for the help.
-
@trentpmcd I wouldn’t think so. I know that my feeds get noticed on twitter, expat, and facebook; and all they get is the link and a snippet. I would assume that since anamelio set it up for me, that hers does the exact same thing across her social media. I know that she handles the primary OBM twitter feeds, and usually has the tweets pre-scheduled by the time I leave for work at 730am for the day. Then I blow it up when I get home and do the Z2H challenge or some other post.

@trentpmcd
Here’s the deal. Anyone and everyone can use auto-posting tools to spam the crap out of every one of the social networks by posting links to everything they publish on every blog they publish in. In fact beginners tend to do that because they are opportunistic and not thinking clearly. Read what annamelio posted.Linkedin is a site for professionals. You have to assess whether or not LinkedIn is an appropriate social media site to post any links and snippets to or not. Would I autopost links and snippets to Linkedin from a family blog or a mommy blog or a just a journal type blog – absolutely not! Please read » Should You Connect Your Blog to Your LinkedIn Profile?
Just as important, with Publicize you can tweak your sharing preferences so that each post reaches its intended destination: you can always choose which services to publish to, and what custom message to include (if any). http://en.blog.wordpress.com/2014/01/15/publicize-course-two/

@maraeastern I use flickr and have a link to it from my blog, I’m not sure it’s as useful to my readers as something like Twitter, but I had flickr before I began my blog and really love using it to share my photographs.
@tjbarkerseattle I use pinterest and I would say it’s not as easy to promote your blog as things like Twitter/Facebook but if you feature a lot of images on your blog then it would complement it well :)

@sarahkey1
Thank you so much for the feedback! I wanted to check out your blog + flickr but I get the message that the blog has been deleted? -
