wp-admin view and "connection lost" error

  • Thanks very much. All three traceroutes look like your machine is reaching the final server destination where the CSS files are stored.

Could you please try clearing your browser’s cache to make sure a corrupted or half-loaded file isn’t getting stuck?

(Be sure to preserve your History when you do this if you want that saved.)

Could you try enabling secure https:

Let me know if you see any change after either of these tweaks. Thanks!

  • Cache is cleared, I don’t see a difference. And sorry for the stupid question, but I can’t find the “Users” tab in my dashboard. Or my dashboard itself, for that matter–can you point me toward where to look? I can’t tell if it’s behind a non-functioning button for me, or I just don’t recognize it because I can’t see the CSS, or I’m looking in the wrong place.

  • Here’s a direct link to the users page:

I’m going to have our engineers look at your case and will keep you posted here.

  • Would you mind please doing one more thing? Here are some instructions for some additional Chrome troubleshooting. Let me know when you’ve uploaded the relevant screenshot(s) into your media library and I’ll pass it along to our engineers. Thanks very much!

  • Hi again,

Thanks for your persistence. I’ve uploaded a screenshot of the developer view to my media page. Let me know if there’s anything else you need.

    Katie

  • Thanks very much. I’ll let you know if I need anything else – thanks for your patience!

  • Hi – our developers have asked if you could do a couple more things:

    1. Could you please load these three pages and let me know if you see an error message or something else. Screenshots of each page would be very useful:

    http://s0.wp.com
    http://s1.wp.com
    http://s2.wp.com

    2. Would you mind repeating the Chrome developer tools test:

    Advanced Browser Troubleshooting

The best way to do this would be to go to a page that isn’t loading right, such as your friend’s wedding site when you’re logged in. Open the developer tools while on that page. Do a full reload of the page by clicking command-shift-R. Then, take a screenshot of the developer tools.

    Thanks again!

  • Hi,

I wasn’t able to do #1 as those URLs get blocked by my work’s cybersecurity filter. I can try again when I get home.

For #2, I repeated the test and uploaded the results to the media file. For some reason now the CSS looks much better, I see the nice formatting on their wedding website when I am signed in, and my website also has more good-looking formatting than before. I still see HTML only on my blog’s dashboard, though, and when I try to add a new post it pops up a screen with title, text and tag boxes and I can’t seem to get my cursor to show up in the text box. So I can title my post but not actually put any content in it.

    Thanks again,

    Katie

  • I wasn’t able to do #1 as those URLs get blocked by my work’s cybersecurity filter

Hmm – if those URLs are being blocked, it could be related to your issues with the CSS not loading. Do you know why your work would block those sites? Is it possible to ask your IT department to unblock them?

Do let me know what happens at home. Thanks!

  • Ok, I will send them a request to unblock. If they get to it today, I’ll let you know what happens, and try again from home in a few hours.

  • Oh, ha, that’s funny. I only get s0.wp.com getting blocked (I tried that one first and then got lazy.) s1 and s2 look the same, I’ve uploaded a screenshot.

  • Great, thanks – I’ve passed along the new information to our engineers, and let me know what you discover from home.

    Have a good weekend!

  • Hello,

I requested an unblock of s0.wp.com from my work’s cybersecurity team, and now everything looks much better. I was able to make a test post easily, all the buttons that I tried work, and all the pages had the CSS enabled. So, maybe the problem had to do with reaching s0.wp.com, maybe that’s a coincidence, but the problem seems to be solved for now. I’ll try accessing wordpress from home, and playing with other types of posts, and let you know if anything seems wrong, but for now it looks great!

    Thanks for your help,

    Katie

  • Excellent! Glad things are working normally from work now that s0.wp.com has been unblocked. Not being able to reach s0.wp.com would definitely have prevented your browser from loading some essential WordPress.com files, so that likely explains why you were having trouble with WordPress.com at work.

If you still experience issues at home, please try loading these three pages from there and let me know how it goes:
    http://s0.wp.com
    http://s1.wp.com
    http://s2.wp.com

    Thanks!

  • Hi –

Do you happen to know why s0.wp.com was blocked in the first place? If there was a problem we are happy to look into it. If your cybersecurity team needs to reach me directly, they can do so via (email visible only to moderators and staff).

  • Hi Barry,

I don’t really know. I work at a government lab and all they told me was the following:

“A proactive block was placed on S0.wp.com because of some information we received from the DOE. The Cyber Safety team has reviewed this ticket and we have removed the block. Please try again.”

I’m not sure what they can tell you, or even what they themselves know. We tend to get all kinds of rules from higher-level bureaucrat types and they’re not always clear or sensible. I can ask about putting you in touch if you’d like, though.

    Katie

  • Hi Katie,

If you can put me in touch that would be great. I am reachable directly at (email visible only to moderators and staff) or if they want to reach me through our security team, (email visible only to moderators and staff). If not, no worries, I understand.
